if I remember correctly I think there's some thought or evidence that viruses were developed by bacteria ages ago as a weapon but since viruses are imperfect replicators they are subject to the process of evolution. Fun fact: the reason why mammals carry their young inside is because our line was infected with a retro-virus that prevented our eggs from being laid.. so we evolved a way around the issue.

I find the question of whether to treat the fever or not to be rather interesting. It's something I never thought about as one would typically see the fever as the problem instead of a side effect to your body trying to fix the actual problem.
@Neko1412126 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you don't often think about it that way. I kinda thought the fever was caused directly by the virus and not to fight it. Knowing that's what the fever's there for, I'd probably actually prefer to keep the fever. If you're an adult - and not someone with a weak health in general - it shouldn't be that hard to deal with a fever. After all, you turn in sick from work when you get the flu, so you just have to lie on your couch and make sure to drink a lot of water/tea/juice/etc. to keep hydrated. If it helps slow down the virus a fever might actually mean that you'll get back on your feet faster?
@animieloverable6 жыл бұрын
It's also kinda like when you have a fracture or injury and one of the body's first response is inflammation which promotes healing to the injured site. And it also has the interesting question on whether inflammation should be reduced by using medication and ice packs. I think that in very severe cases where inflammation may damage surrounding muscle and nerves is when I think medication should be used. So I think it's quite and interesting question. ^.^

You need a doctor's degree and at least some work experience in order to have a final-tier position in the medical field. This particular field is notorious for being pricey, lengthy, and rigorous even before a doctorate's program. Thus, one should only major in it with genuine passion and interest, not merely on a whim. I believe Jonathan believed OP was thinking on a whim, which could prove to be a costly mistake in money and time. I took 3 years of medical in high school for EMT myself and decided to switch because memorizing 500 root words and other medical symbols/jargon as a "small warmup" of what's to come just wasn't worth it for me.
@amateurstoryteller49296 жыл бұрын
it's tough as you basically have to know everything. But it's fine if you love it. A piece of advice if you really want to pursue medical career, be strong and never give up. It can be stressful and busy and sometimes you'll be scolded (the doctors can be very strict to their students). You have lesser vacations too. But if you enjoy it, everything will be fine.

While you're on Crunchyroll, you should check out Black Jack! It's an anime about a mysterious unlicensed surgeon who charges outrageous fees because he's the only one who can treat the strange cases he gets. What's really interesting about the series is that the original author (Osamu Tezuka of Astro Boy fame, widely considered to be the father of manga) was originally a doctor before he started drawing manga. So while he does take artistic liberties, he knows when he's taking them. You also find out a lot about what the Japanese medical system was like in the 1970s. For example, did you know that it used to be standard practice to keep a cancer diagnosis from your patient because there was no cure for it, so telling them was considered cruel? Obviously this wouldn't fly today! Plus you get to see cool but ridiculous stuff like Black Jack operating on himself in the Australian outback to remove a parasite while dingoes try to eat him.

That sounds pretty intense. I second this suggestion.
@sdsign42296 жыл бұрын

@JudasFm6 жыл бұрын
I second, third and fourth your Black Jack nomination! It's more of a fantasy than Cells at Work (Pinoko, anyone?) but it's still one of the best medical animes/mangas. On a side note, the keeping of cancer diagnoses from patients wasn't quite as harsh as that. Doctors and nurses would tell the family and loved ones, and rely on them to break the news to the patient when the time was right. These days, this is no longer a matter of course, but if you ever go to hospital here in Japan (which is more usual than you think, as we don't have GPs here) you have to fill out a form. One of the questions on that form roughly translates as: "If it's serious, do you want us to tell you? - Y/N" I've no idea what the Y:N ratio is; it would be interesting to see.

As a medical writer trainee, I am enjoying this series immensely! Listening to your opinion on every aspect of the anime is really fun to watch and to see you react to! Plus, it's also facinating to get your breakdown on the more technical parts. While watching Cells at Work, I was amazed that many of the medical terms I was studying during my internship were not only referred to throughout each episode, but were also used as specific plot points/characters. It's a wonderful show and I sincerely hope that you continue to watch and enjoy it! Thank you for your reviews!
