The question that I always ask potential teachers/employees is "How would students describe you?". I am hoping to hear engaging, patient, supportive, etc. Always a tough question.

Interesting and novel to show a real interview. I agree that it drifted a tad into general education. Usually they just want to see what the applicant looks and sounds like (clear accent, presentable, experienced, can teach). Just a tip: So many people Skype looking down at the laptop with the ceiling as a backdrop. One should have the camera on eye-level. This is a must when teaching on-line too. Lift the back of the laptop by putting two thick books partially under it. To prevent your laptop from sliding forward you can simply use something like Bostik's "prestik" ('multi-purpose re-usable adhesive'; 'blue stick').

Great tip for keeping it eye level. Didn't mention it before ~ Nobody wants to look up into your face like when you accidentally open the canera on your phone. Get it eye level and make sure that the borders look presentable.

Thanks for sharing your interview. Great anecdotes during your interview and realizing some of your mistakes. Remember having taught adult ESL in the past, and then being caught off guard when being interviewed for K-8 level. Especially with babies, teaching can be very different. Luckily a school took a chance on me and I ended up loving it. Hope you were able to find an ESL job in Korea.

Hi McCool. Yes, I've got a job in Korea. Even though we prepare for things it helps to get lucky. I'm sure you'll adapt to the new group of students and have a great time teaching them. ^^

What I’ve learned to do as a teacher if others would like to utilize in their classrooms is simple. At the beginning of the school year, create rules that you as the Teacher expect of your students, 5-10 rules that they can remember. Go over them etc. Then ask the students what do they expect from YOU as the teacher, another 5-10 rules. If a student later on in the year becomes disruptive, instead of signaling that student out, remind the class of your expectations of them. And then, as a class, ask them of their expectations of you. They should know them in order etc. After you all recite them and go over them, just remind them that this helps everyone in the learning process and you all must follow the rules in order to create a safe and healthy learning environment for all. Then continue teaching. If the student persists, after you have given group work or individual work, then and only then should you walk over and speak to the student. Pull them to the side or get onto their level and ask them if there was something that you as a teacher could do to help them better understand the lesson or the class rules. It usually helps not to point blame and to make the student feel safe enough to communicate more with you. Hope it can help someone 😁.

Wonderful idea Olsenmania!! I'll definitely share it with the other teachers and peehaps make a video on it. I like how it keeps the students accountable for their actions and the teacher can easily follow through. Thank you so much!! 🙏👍😍

I can't thank you enough for this awesome video, you 'r so great! Actually, I'm a teacher having a bachelor's degree in English with around 10 years of experience in teaching English. In addition, I have a TEFL certificate and preparing thoroughly for the IELTS. What else should I do to be able to teach in China as a non-native teacher?
@etacude3 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you've done everything that's necessary to be a great English teacher, Alaa! 😃 It's sad that it's more difficult for non-native teachers to get a job abroad even though there are so many that are extremely qualified such as yourself. But, I've heard of other teachers working abroad too so there should be a way! 🙏

@@etacude I would`t say that. As long as you have the right qualifications (BA, TEFL Certicate/Celta-Tesol) plus a high command of the language, you have the same opportunities as others abroad. I am not a native English speaker and have worked in Malta and Spain witout any problem. Also, I have a friend who is working in London. She isn`t native either. and of course, there are so many ways out there.
