There is an easy acronym to brief a hold TSAFE. Type of entry to the hold including if its distance or timed. Speed in the hold. Altitude to hold. Fuel available and finally EFC expect further clearance. Standard makes it easy

@Diegokitro
@Diegokitro 5 жыл бұрын
@@FlightChopsI round the numbers to make it easy, it doesn't have to be perfect. The seminole I did my flight test uses 20.9 Gallons per hour. I round it to 20. 45 mins reserve + 15 mins for the approach = 1 hour. So fuel on board divided by 20 minus 1 = Hold time. I told the examiner that for the flight I prepared the calculations I had 20 mins for holding but for the actual flight we could hold for an hour. I hope this one helps

Sim time is huge for instrument training. It’s way cheaper than a real airplane and usually (from my experience) more sensitive/twitchy. That last part really helps you get down fine control inputs and makes a real plane a little easier honestly because it doesn’t move around so much on its own.

I've found this. Using the sim for PPL training actually hindered me, but having started instrument training in the UK I made massive progress just between my first two lessons by using a sim.

Trimming I think is different because you can feel out a trim in real life, to the point where you can almost feel the trim “catch” in a position. If you are purely using electric trim though it is pretty similar, I use flight sim x and I found myself using the same trim techniques in real life that I did in the sim.
@mytech6779
@mytech6779 5 жыл бұрын
Trimming in a full cockpit RedBird is also way harder than in real life. I think its either the position encoder being a cheap relative-position type rather than absolute position [and its skipping some ticks], or the programmed sensitivity is wrong; likely both. I know if you spin the heading bug or obs knobs too fast they don't read direction correctly and just jitter back and forth.

Track IR was one of the single biggest enhancements to my sim immersion experience, prior to that I had three screens, now back to one 42 inch. That said I'm only using a CH eclipse yoke and CH rudder pedals so I need to see everything in the virtual cockpit, your using more of an instrument set up. But for GA VFR with Ortho4XP scenery it's fantastic. Can't understand why anyone would vote this down. Great idea and very good video, hope to see more of these comparisons, there is so much that can be covered, training, maneuvers, safety, stalls, spins, different aircraft, equipment, it's huge. Keep up the good work.

I find when flying with the 530/430 TRK and DTK are your saviors. Yes, the needle in the CDI is what you're actually following and tells you where you are on the LOC, but TRK and DTK tell you how to stay there even with a crazy wind correction angle. Once I get that needle pretty well centered I make TRK and DTK match and make small corrections based on that, only changing TRK a few degrees at a time. At 20:04 he's actually doing pretty good. TRK is 111 and DTK is 119. Just say "left is littler, right is bigger" and you can see you don't want to turn left, you need to turn right to make 111 go bigger towards 119. Since you're right of course, you'll have to go a few degrees bigger on TRK compared to DTK, maybe to 121. Once that needle centers, or just before, turn "slightly" whichever way to make TRK and DTK match (left makes TRK littler, right makes TRK bigger), in this case you'd have to turn left since you'd be on TRK of like 121. Once the needle is centered and TRK and DTK match, look at the heading on the gyro and hold that heading. That now becomes your primary "stay on the LOC" instrument and then glance over at TRK and DTK and make "slight" corrections to make them match, "left is littler, right is bigger". I was told those slight corrections should just be made with rudder pressure. That's it! Also, zoom in a little on the GPS, the iPad with georeferenced plates are AWESOME for situational awareness and give you an idea with a very quick glance of where you're headed and what you need to do, but the GPS will give that same information if you just zoomed in a little and it's right beside the TRK DTK numbers, at least on the 530. On the 430, you can't have the map, TRK/DTK and the on GPS screen CDI up at the same time.

In my (real) plane, there's a switch for the autopilot source between vor 1 and vor 2. In my case the GPS is on 1 and a vor receiver with glideslope is on 2, but the switch will go between. If there's something like that in the sim you can set up the secondary (430) for the autopilot. Otherwise, get a plane in the sim that only has one 430 (like the airfoillabs-C172SP), or possibly configure the one you're using that way (some planes in the sim have options like that). As far as flaps, I usually dump them all in at minimums or breakout, or leave them out for the missed.

So my own fun story about flight sims. I've always loved aviation and I've made it my career since leaving highschool but serving as a crew chief really kicked my motivation in the nuts. In 2012 while stationed in Korea I made a friend who had the same love for aviation and we built our friendship off of that passion for flying and fighter jets. In 2013 we both left Korea, my bro went to England and I went to Germany. Once in Germany I got something I always wanted, a gaming pc lol. I told my friend terry and he convinced me to get a hotas setup and DCS. Although its a combat sim, it is still a "study simulation". Although I played flight sims for a while as a child, I was NOT professional at all. My buddy through an internet connection taught me how to fly and manipulate different systems. Needless to say, I will always appreciate the value of a study level simulation. Coincidently around this time is when I found your channel and my love for aviation was truly rekindled and the fire has burned bright ever since. THANKYOU Steve for what your doing, your not only inspiring aviators. Your also bridging the gap between two communities which is totally awesome!

When you go ‘direct to’ on a Garmin system, it will calculate a standard rate turn from your current position to get on the line. So you should normally not have to make a drastic maneuver to stay on course. You need to get your lower display to show all the instruments, not just the six pack.

In X-plane use Ctrl+P, this will bring up a 3D flight path, press it again, will add some shading to see height component better. To clear it press ctrl+P 3 more times. The last two presses will bring up flight boxes if you have an ILS tuned, then the third clears it. Easiest to see from an external view but super helpful for patterns, approaches, and holds.

Couple of tips Steve from someone else using the XP11 172 to mirror real world training: - there's a free add-on for the 172 that greatly increases the realism by tweaking some of the flight characteristics. If I remember right it fixes the flaps 30 attitude to be more like the real thing and gets rid of the silly screeching tires - there's another add-on that will remove the 530 and let you run a single x430 and replace the x530 with the old Bendix style radio stacks - toebrake2yaw is a great plugin that lets you bind the rudder pedals to the toe brakes to give more realistic ground handling if your pedals are like mine and don't have a seperate toe brakes axis - you can set view hotkeys in the basics>quick views under keyboard settings. I recommend setting the numpad for quick views over the glareshield, down at the mixture/AP controls I have more 172 goodies but those are the main ones I remember off the top of my head. Send me a message if you want some help with the tweaking, I've got a hilarious amount of time invested into fiddling with xplane. I'm also Burlington local working on my CPL and IR but do my flying out of Kitchener so again, if you want any help or input just let me know! Your setup looks really good and has tremendous potential, you just need some of the hardware to play nicer with the software ! Best of luck!

I advise getting the Pilotworkshop's "Getting Started with Flight Simulation" to learn how to get the most out of your sim setup and get your physical GPS unit working well. It looks like you are flying a Piper in the "real world" so you should get a third party Piper to match. Carenado aircraft are very detailed but the Garmin G-1000 doesn't do SIDs and STARS which I have always wondered why since the Laminar G-1000 do them just fine.Then to top things off, get a subscription to Navigraph and have Jep update every month. No more alert "Data out of Date" and missing procedures in the Garmin. No pausing allowed, prebrief like normal and work through your problem. You learn how to deal with the stress and organize your thinking. PilotEdge is defiantly a plus to really get you comfortable in the real world. I wish I had all these aids when I was getting my Instrument rating 35+ years ago.

Tough choice, of course it's a good idea to learn basic steam gauges, but glass suites are becoming more and more commonplace, especially considering that glass gauges can save lives. Just trying out FSX's G1000 setups can get you familiar enough to build confidence for IFR, I used to hate it since I couldn't figure it out as easily as a typical GPS, but the G1000's features FAR exceed those offered in any earlier units. You save weight, you delete your vacuum pump, and you have complete visual reference on the fly, actual numbers instead of guesswork. Even the Nxi has features that makes airliner gauges blush!

17:20 For this request you will need to use an airplane that does not have a 530 gps system on the airplane so the 430 system you have can operate radios and nav for the airplane. I haven't used x-plane before but my suggestion here is to either check the stock airplanes on x-plane to find the one that only has one 430 OR you can consider purchase a 3rd party airplane (Way better option than stock) that only has a 430. Carenado.com is a very good 3rd party developer that have good airplanes for FSX, P3D and X-Plane. You can consider checking them out. (F33A Bonanza $26.95 Single 430 system as an option.) Also, is on my basic understanding on X-Plane that their NAV database is easier to update than P3D. You can check out navigraph.com because I think they have tools to update the sim database so you can use it on any aircraft. (Subscription required). EDIT: After posting this I read on the comment a link that can make your C172 panel 430 only. You should try that! The flight sim community is awesome! Lots of comments to get through to see if it was already answered, but great response, Jose. Steve, great video seriously! I always enjoy them, but these have been much more relatable from a personal standpoint on my current journey. I learned a few things and what to work on next for myself. Great time to be a pilot with all the technology coming together too that can be used at home! X-Plane was hugely beneficial in helping me learn the GNS430 (and other radio / nav panels), which is always reassuring to see someone else doing the same. Justflight has the best PA-28 models (payware but all use a GNS430 as primary radio/nav) if you want to fly those to match your aircraft being used for IFR training as well. If you keep the default Cessna 172, the reality expansion pack by simcoders is the best upgrade for the flight model. Probably already aware of that, and I'm sure so many before me have suggested it elsewhere. If not, there ya' go! : )

For IFR proficiency, I found the RealSimGear physical GNS unit (and now the G1000 that I am using) to be more valuable than a crazy multi screen set up; and controls at best are not realistic, but honestly, they are barely relevant - plan to use the auto pilot in the sim. IFR is about cockpit workflow and situational awareness. Something like Pilot Edge is great for having realistic ATC to manage, and I'd also recommend getting ForeFlight and an iPad to fly the sim with. IFR is not about looking out the window, it's about understanding how to scan the panel, work the radios and manage the airplane.

Hi Chops is the panel with your six pack an Ipad? If so you can get a small program that allows u to build the panel of your plane and the 430 adjust thing son the six pack in both game and Ipad. I built a system with some of the items you have to help with my instrument add-on. I completely learned the 430 via the sims its about 95% accurate. I was able to do all my flights at home and practice, plus I even flew my checkride before the actually. I tried to use it for my commercial multi add-on but hasnt been good for that. what you're using it for is great, anything else I have found it doesnt help. Its also great tool for flying a VOR arc type approach. So many add-ons that greatly improve graphics and I was able to find the exact cockpit layout I was using. if you check my page it has a video showing somethings. Cheers

Great video...suggest you remove or lower the instrument panel on the upper screen, the double panel setup you have detracts from the realism. If the “hard” panel is in front of you the upper screen should just be the out the window view.

The issue is, we needed the "virtual panel" because we were using the 530 for primary nav, had to see the ILS needles, and had to manage the auto pilot at the bottom of the virtual panel - far from an idea set up... but I am working on making it better

The other problem with these yokes is they have a dead zone programmed into the firmware that you cannot do anything about in either the simulator or the OS hardware setup. I could move mine 10 degrees either side before the sim would respond and roll the aircraft, all sim dead zones set at 0.

The error warning doesn't go away even when you set to the compass - you have to acknowledge the error. Also, a shortcut is to hit "d" to do this set for you (we will say it’s too hard to line up your eyes on a 2d monitor than it would have been in real life). Make it part of your preflight to hit d to get it done so you never actually get the warning. I'm only a sim flyer - it’s good to know this kind of flying (which I do often and not pausing) is easier in real life :) The only thing is I don't have radio talking to me (or if I do, it’s the computer generated one - I don't do PilotEdge and have a real human talk to me).

Is shipping cost the only reason that the contest is limited to the contiguous United States? I am in Canada and would be more than willing to pay any additional shipping costs for the opportunity to get this SIM setup!
@FlightChops

Yes it is. I'm suggesting to people that are cool with that, to provide a U.S. address if they can deal with their own import. But be advised, it's going to be coming on a skid most likely, and we are expecting the packing/shipping cost with in the U.S. to be $500-$700 (thanks Sporty's for handling that :) . So I really don't know what the costs would be to move it further and deal with duty, etc on a ~$10,0000+ item.

IMO stick with either P3D or Xplane. VIsuals are good on the new sim, but as a pilot I will much rather have more complex from 3rd party devs and have complete use of an airplane in a sim rather than switching the view to an outside view to see the scenery. Also, hope you nail your IFR checkride! Best of luck!

Shame the contest is for US residents only. Circumstances beyond your control I bet. A great giveaway to whoever is lucky enough to win! With regard to the RealSim 430, the guys at realsim have an update for the unit where it will switch the primary 530 for the 430 in xplane to switch the functions. Then the hardware will set the 430 as nav1 rather than nav2. After seeing your setup I bought a 430 for my IFR training and switched everything over. I now have the stock 172 in xplane set up for 430 primary linked to vor1. Exactly as I have in my training aircraft.

I think that a mad mod for this FS would be to add another screen, and align things so that the gap is the pillar. Then, using on of those head tracking headbands (the name escapes me now, but they were pretty neat, i think Sony made some...been a while. I played a lot of flight games many moons ago with it, before "VR") you can "look" around, which would mimic the motion of your line of sight with the FS, which i'm sure has contingencies for this kind of stuff, i hear that there are some that are entirely "VR" ready.

There are adjustments you can make to the sim, but it's really difficult overall. I usually end up doing at least altitude hold (autopilot) in the sim to account for that. In real life my altitude hold doesn't work as well as the trim, so I use that instead, and use the autopilot for heading.

When I practice on my sim or have a safety pilot in the plane, I use paper plates. That way when in actual or without a safety pilot, having an iPad/georeferencing, it feels like I am cheating. That and if my iPad took a dump, I am not outside a comfort zone or least less so. Make practice hard on yourself, so the real thing feels less so.

Hi there, thanks a lot for your videos! Keep up the great work! Hope you don't mind I ask a question down here in the comments :) I've become a little bit obsessed with GA recently and early next year I hope to start sailplane courses with an end goal to get a PPL eventually (I'm 30+ if it matters). But it's all still quite far ahead, unlike simulators like X-Plane and MS FS 2020 which is around the corner. It seems like it's possible to assemble an OK-level desktop sim station (not home cockpit of course) for 2-3K USD/EUR, which is 30% of PPL and free to fly (unlike real rental planes where you pay by hours. But I'm afraid of "damaging" my not-existing-yet muscle memory by using yokes like honeycomb (not sure I'll go for force-feedback options -- too pricey). What if I learn and memorize incorrect movements, procedures, etc. and then we'll have troubles studying and flying real planes? Am I freaking out for no reason? I've been playing racing games for years, and then had no issues starting driving a real car / go-karts. Is there any reason to be afraid of playing sims if I want to pursue my GA-dream? If you have any experience of flying both sim and real planes -- please share what you think! Any kind of related information/experience is highly appreciated!

Why do you have the panel on your screen as well? Your PC screen should just have the "window" view, because your avionics are on the avionics panel you built - dont' waste that screen real estate

Some advice. If you are using a quality after-market plane add-on, you should be able to undock some of those telltales you are keeping the software panel on the screen to see. You should be able to undock and place these on the screen just along the top of the eyebrow then remove the rest so all you see is the outside of the plane. Also, if you can undock an element, you should be able to rig an arduino to run physical telltales into your physical panel in the location of the actual ones. Black Friday is coming up. Seriously consider getting a couple more monitors to give you some peripheral sight-picture ... if your graphics card can handle them. If not, budget for a beefier card, a second card in SLI, or gang in a second computer whose sole job is to handle exterior visuals. (It's possible to go into the windows settings and spread the work across all real and virtual cores in both computers) It really makes a difference, compensating a bit for the lack of force-feedback and the physical sensations of flying. If you accurately zero the yoke for level on the ground, in flight you should be able to just let go of the yoke and it will return to it's zero setting. If the sight-picture and gauges indicate that the plane is ascending or descending due to flight factors, trim until they reach the desired attitude. Saitek makes (made) a power/props/mixture nob unit with vernier functionality, but they have become hard to find for some reason. HA! I just found one on craigslist !!! Crazy high price for what used to be about US$75 ===> ( tinyurl.com/y3xms3a3 ) or ... ==> ( tinyurl.com/y5evr2nv ) Lastly, there are USB programmable button panels so you can get the keyboard out of the panel area.

We can get it anywhere in the contiguous U/S. if you can provide an address - We just can't deal with getting it across a border - if you take if from there and handle your own import / further shipping that is up to you. Be advised, it will likely be coming on a skid, and we are expecting the shipping to be $500+ due to size / weight and the requirements for packing it up.
