FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

Jason, don't know how old you are, doesn't matter, really. DaVinci, I believe, once said that once you take to the skies you'll never look upward again the same way. Hundreds of years before flight, of any kind, it's very prophetic. You will understand when your instructor gives you the controls for the first time. You are joining a very limited club, and you will see things in a way that others do not, can not. Welcome.

Dear FlightChops. You've made so many accomplishments over the years with so many "type ratings". I had no idea you didn't have your instrument rating. You have overcome many more adversaries than the instrument rating. It's tough I know, but yet it is fun and exiting. But you have the "Chops" to win it the first time. Remember a lot of people don't pass the instrument rating the first time and rightly so. But very many more don't pass the flight instructor rating the first time and very rightfully so as well. You have done more than the best student pilots have ever accomplished. My advice to you is to "know you have earned it". You will win it.

That 5 minutes prior thing is kind of goofy. Typically in the US they will clear you for the approach then if there isn't a tower, clear you to switch to CTAF. If you ride it IMC all the way to the ground you call and cancel, if you break out, you can switch back over and cancel with ATC....Heck in the US, at non-towered airports, radio calls aren't even required, it is just suggested.

Seems to me that getting an IFR rating in Canada is significantly more detailed and difficult. The timing issue and cold weather corrections aren’t normally an issue on checkrides in the US, although my examiner did ask what the “snowflake” meant on the approach plates for KTVC.
@iVince905
@iVince905 4 жыл бұрын
Very similar none the less but different view on how TC views training compared to the FAA. To be fair CPL flight tests are easier in Canada, we don’t have to perform maneuvers like chandelles and lazy 8s. Also, majority of students do their IR after CPL and ME. I know in America, its different where one obtains an IR after PPL.
@Valantir
@Valantir 4 жыл бұрын
iVince905 I've never understood why so many students do multi and IFR AFTER their cpl here. School milking them for money really. You have so much time building to do between ppl and cpl why not do it during?

You will have it if you "WILL". I flunked my CFIA flight test several times back in 1972 before I finally passed the test, mostly because I didn't deserve it, but also because the FAA had a policy of not "allowing young kids to get CFI's". I know because I heard it through the grapevine that the FAA examiner who tested me said to others that "these young kids don't deserve to become flight instructors". Maybe he was right in his day because he was an ex-fighter pilot and I was age 21 back in 1972.
@CanuckFlyer
@CanuckFlyer 4 жыл бұрын
You can always ask for delaying vectors or even a hold on the Burlington approach if the timing between Hamilton and Burlington is too tight for comfort. That would help getting you the necessary time to make the "5 min prior to approach" radio call. Plus I'm pretty sure an examiner wouldn't come down on a student for not making that call 5 min prior. They treat it like real life, and in real IFR you typically dont make radio calls to your "Alternate" before you actually need to go there. Great Video and Good luck!
@willr176
@willr176 4 жыл бұрын
whiteranger84 Exactly what I was thinking. Give yourself time to make the call, but also use the extra time to collect yourself and be sure the next approach is fully briefed; an examiner should look very kindly on good judgement like this. Best wishes for the exam once the weather cooperates!

Small window of opportunity, running out of time.. Oh lord this sounds like 'get-there-itis' that often leads to disaster. Be careful... always. If you'd like to win that panel, stay tuned for the announcement of when/how it will be given away. When was "get-there-itis" implied in this one? you mean my 2 month window to focus on the end of training and the test prep? It had to do with work scheduling, any other time of hear 2 months would have been more than enough - but to be safe, I ended up having to cancel most of my bookings due to bad weather - it is frustrating and inconvenient, but at no time did I push to fly when it was not safe to do so.

40 years ago I went through the cycle of weather or money forcing me many times to cancel my final flight test for my ppl. Long story short circumstances and regulatory changes meant I was outside the window on my student permit with 55 flight hours in my log book and the cost of trying again more than 3 times what I already had spent with no schools here, go ahead to 5 years ago and many hours flying with others and flying a friends pipistrel until he crashed the aircraft I finally was in a position to try and pick up where I had left off. Full 20 hour ground school then trouble with medical. Transport Canada really doesn't want people flying. My flying buddy built a single seat E-Gull so no more flying with him :( . Hopefully before I die I will find the money to at least get an ultralight and the license to fly it

Man that's really frustrating. I have been following your IFR journey - in fact I watched a few of your theory study videos before deciding to get my IR. So back in May last year I sat the test, then did the practical course over three weeks full-time. Got my Instrument Rating (during winter down under), and have been rated for the past seven months. And you're still not there yet. I guess our weather is a lot more conducive to flying than Canada's - although very occasionally (in the dead of winter) we have to consider icing. Stick in there buddy. OR, hop on a plane to Australia and get it done down here!! Some good real world IMC at present (smoke). :)

@@georgia_dawgs_2746 it was not super hard actually. If you are in a 141 program, it will be easier than the stage 4 oral. My biggest recommendation to study is get the ASA PPL oral exam guide and have a friend or family member go through it with you cover to cover, having you answer each question out loud and having them verify if its correct with the written answer in the book. This will take about 10 hours if done thoroughly, but it is worth it.

Very first thing, at 0:35 into the video. "I'll never use this again!" Never say Never! You have no concept what the future holds. Sure, the RV is going to have a state of the art panel, but what happens when you decide you want to take the wife and the daughter to Sun 'n' Fun? Are you going to fly the RV, or maybe, instead, you'll rent an Arrow or a Seneca to take you. They may not have all the latest and greatest. Stay proficient in everything. By the way, before you go and give away that sweet sim you have at home, wait until FS 2020 hits the market, and see if you can plug it up to that sim. I would LOVE to see a sim like that with wrap around displays running FS2020 in VFR mode. That ought to be interesting. Now, as to the ratinsg, you'll get it eventually. Spend some more time in the sim honing your skills, even if you can't log it. When that day comes, and by the way, next Monday and next Friday are both above freezing, although Friday is raining, you'll still feel fresh and comfortable. I've said all along, you're going to ace your test, don't fear it, but more importantly, don't fear yourself! Can't wait for you to get it.

Yes, fair point - even when editing I cringed when I heard myself say that. What I am really doing is more of a self imposed rite of passage - attacking the rating in one of the most challenging ways; with a 6 pack panel and no auto pilot. Many people get their instrument ratings in a G1000 and only have to turn off the auto pilot briefly during the check ride.

@@FlightChops I won't say you are doing it the hard way, but I won't say it's the right it best way, either. Is a good way, one of many, and I think it makes you work harder, but there's nothing wrong with that. I DO know, just like the Harvard, you'll do just fine with this and you'll get that rating with no problem. Proud of ya, Steve. I wish I could still be flying, so you're doing this for what Vern Demerest in "Airport" called 'ground-bound penguins!' I, for one, am thankful for you doing this for us.

It is actually touched all the time - the maintenance at the school is solid and it runs great. Now, is it cleaned often? no.
