nameless When switchin a nav source or switching nav frequencies I was taught the pneumonic TITTS (I know not exactly PG) so it was later changed to FITTS Tune or Frequency Identify TOGGLE Twist OBS Steer

Can someone explain as to why, I thought if the obs was set to cdi, then it would be set for the nav freq tuned, and say you tuned in a freq snd the obs on the 430 was set to GPS the cdi wouldnt eork np?

@@nicholasb1231 The 430 sends both GPS and VOR/ILS data to a single CDI. The unit has no way to determine which source should be displayed so that must be selected manually. For IFR flight the primary navigation must be from the CDI so failing to properly select the mode is grounds for failing the checkride. Hence the $600 button.

@@nicholasb1231 note that there is a setting on the gps to make it automatically select gps or vloc depending on the procedure selected, but you can turn off that feature too. It will also put the frequency into the secondary so you can hit v.

Two things from me. First, please do the sim videos! I earned my PPL in 2008 and have used sims for over 20 years to practice procedures. My instrument training has been a stop/start affair similar to yours. The sim has been essential for me to keep my head in the game during a break to practice different procedures. I'd love to see how you incorporate it into your own training. Second, Dennis is the man! He is such a knowledgeable and cool pilot and I really enjoy hearing his explanations. He also looks like he could break into the guitar solo from Layla at any point! (surely I'm not the only that sees the resemblance)

I couldn't agree more about sim use. I do two sim flights every morning when I get up: 1) one normal departure and one approach landing; and 2) a partial panel flight. I set some kind of failure in XPlane and complete the flight with no vacuum, for example. When I fly in actual IMC I'm super comfortable--I love it, actually.

Hey Steve, unrelated to the video, but I just visited Canada for the first time; the mission was to ferry a Dash 8 after its C check back home to Riga, Latvia (we do them in Canada now because you guys happen to be good and quick at it). Absolutely beautiful country, super friendly people, and although there was not much going on in Halifax it was still interesting to see something different to Europe. Flying across Canada to Goose Bay and onto Keflavik over Greenland must have been one of the coolest things ive done in my career, as I’d seen a lot of your videos and always wanted to fly in that part of the world- felt surreal to actually do it. Dennis a very good instructor! I know it's not supposed to be training but I learned a lot from the video. He explains things very well. I always thought forecast icing was considered known but it makes sense now that forecast is throwing a dart at a dartboard in terms of accuracy

I highly recommend x plane with a yoke and trim. Some people are happy with the electric trim but I sprung for the trim wheel because that's what I have in the plane. They model the Garmin 430w very well, and it saves learning that with the Hobbs running.

Ill second xplane with yoke, not only does the 430w work very similar (minus some info pages like raim prediction, at least in version X) you can also hook up your Ipad & foreflight thru wifi and run the flight as if it were real thru the sim. Wont improve stick and rudder skills but Amazing tool for working out procedures, holding the plane steady while briefing the approach, making sure to set the timer on timed approaches and holds and things of that nature. Really helps to build a flow so that you can stay ahead of the airplane

@@nicholaskrotki5557 Yes! And there's just a setting on the x plane data settings page to turn ipad on, and a setting in foreflight under devices. There's no need to install extra software. I don't recommend Microsoft FSX, because the databases are very outdated and aren't synced with the nav data like they are on x plane (and FSX don't model WAAS at all).

Great vid, Steve. It's fun watching you learn and it reminds me that I am much happier watching this stuff on video than I am trying to learn to fly myself, because it's just too freakin' complicated for me. BTW, at 6:09ish, in the office with your instructor (who I like a lot) just adjacent to his left shoulder, against the wall is a copy of my grandfather's cloud chart (it's just below the map on the wall). My grandfather, Louis D. Rubin, Sr. started Cloud Chart Inc, in the late 1960's in Richmond, VA where he was known as "The Weather Wizard" and he developed a system of using cloud formations and wind directions to predict weather accurately. His cloud charts, made from photographs he had taken over decades of him teaching himself meteorology, became standard issue in ATC towers, ship's bridges, meteorological institutes and all manner of military installations worldwide. Over the years, with modern technology taking over, his charts have fallen somewhat out of favor, but they are still out there, as you can see! They are still available at: cloudchart.com/ which is run by my cousin (his granddaughter).

Smart move on home Sim Steve. It's a great tool for IFR practice. I recommend Xplane 11. Has Garmin 430 and 500 in base sim. I use the sim all the time to practice upcoming IFR flights. Things really slow down in the plane when you know what comes next. Big help when your ass is in the clouds and the nerves start creeping in.

I also want to see the SIM videos. So much of IFR flying is familiarity and proficiency with the navigator you're using. My navigator didn't do something I was expecting it to do on the check ride, and it was great to be able to troubleshoot it while in the middle of an approach, something I wouldn't have been able to do if my instructor wasn't such a hard ass about me being able to use the navigator without thinking. Also, I gotta say that I love your instructor. My instructor insisted we do all our flights in the system as real IFR flights, and it made it so I felt totally prepared and comfortable when I got my rating and started flying IMC on my own. Having an instructor that has real world IFR experience also makes a big difference, and I think your icing conversation demonstrated that.

Yes! The move I use is cursor on, big dial the waypoint, and direct direct enter. This activates the leg rather than direct enter enter, which goes direct to the waypoint. It's useful for cleared direct to a waypoint, but I find they vector you to intercept the course most times.

If you're setting up a home simulator to train on the GNS430 I HIGHLY recommend using FSX with a Carenado or Alabeo aircraft that has the RealityXP GNS430 integrated. You will need to buy the aircraft and the RealityXP software, but it matches the ACTUAL GNS430 almost exactly, function for function, and will show in both 2D and 3D panel views. A2A Simulations makes a great Cherokee 180 that uses the GNS430 from RealityXP, and you can also get the Garmin GTN series as well.

@FlightChops FlightChops it’s software only, but all the knob and button options and functions are the same. I used it to practice when I did my instrument to practice loading procedures, flight plans and missed approach procedures. If your mouse has a wheel, that would be used to turn the inner and outer knobs. It is very close to operating the actual hardware. There aren’t really any good hardware options but if you’re really married to that idea there is an option for this rack/dock thing that you would take your actual Garmin 430 out of your aircraft and bring it home and slide it into the dock and you would use it with Garmins simulator software. This would NOT be used in conjunction with an actual desktop flight simulator program however, so you would not get the experience of actually operating the GNS 430 while visualizing your 8 pack panel to fly an actual approach. I really don’t recommend this option if you’re serious about simulating the procedured as well as the functions of the GNS. The buttonology on the GNS 430 is actually so simple you won’t really have to worry too much about differences between simulating it on your home computer and in an actual cockpit. The confusing part of the GNS 430 is really learning how to navigate the pages of interface, and that is about 95% accurate when using the RealityXP GNS430 software. You definitely will be well served, to use Microsoft flight simulator X and the Reality XP GNS. The reason why I specifically recommended a Carenado or Alabeo Aircraft, is that it seamlessly integrates the GNS 430 into the aircraft software. So it displays very naturally on your aircraft panel in the simulator. A2A Simulations makes the Cherokee 180 you would want if you want to keep it similar to your training aircraft, but a lot of the Carenado and Alabeo aircraft use it as well. The reality XP 430 does not come with the aircraft, it will have to be installed separately, but it’s very easy to set the aircraft up to use it. I’ve been using Microsoft flight simulator X since it was released, and especially used it at home when I went through my instrument rating to practice what I learned in flight school. You won’t regret using it. It will aid you not only in becoming very familiar with the GNS 430 itself, but it will allow you to actually practice flying the procedures with an aircraft on your desktop. ONE CAVEAT: I think it only uses a U.S. navigation database, so it may not work for Canadian approaches or basic point to point navigation. If you can get past that and practice approaches at US airports, the experience should translate seamlessly to Canadian airports and procedures. Links below...

I have an X-plane 11 sim set up. I recommend that you look at Pilotedge.net and RealSimGear. Pilot Edge lets you fly the sim talking to actual certified controllers. There is a series of test IFR scenarios you can fly with increasing difficulty. RealSimGear makes Garmin 430, 530, and 1000 external boxes with working knobs and buttons so you get more real experience.

Hey Steve, pilottraining.ca do a standalone Garmin 430 training course with a simulator which you can download onto your laptop! Best of all, its like $20! I'm still a pretty new PPL (out of CZBA too) so I used the course just to get a better handle on all the features of the 403, some parts were a bit challenging because its definitely an IFR focused course so it might be good if you are still working on getting comfortable with the 430. Love these more technical deep dive videos man! Keep up the great work!

In the US at least, as far as the FAA is concerned, known icing basically means "you're getting ice right now." Once you start picking up ice, you're in known icing conditions and that's when the whole FIKI restriction comes in and it wouldn't be legal to continue. A forecast is, indeed, not known icing. The FAA used to say that flying in visible moisture with subzero temperatures was known icing, but that grounded way too many people unnecessarily so they switched to the "it's only known when it starts happening" definition. Of course, legal vs. smart still applies, so use your best judgment.

Yes I would love a video on applying home sims to real life. I have a wallet burner of a sim on Prepar3d with a handful of planes and such, always wondered how it compared to actual flying. Given the user has about as realistic as one can get for around $2,000, which is a reasonable budget for most people getting into simming.
