My favorite conspiracy theory: "Real Genius" was actually a documentary, or rather, an exposé. "Project Crossbow" is in fact exactly what the USAF's mysterious X-37B spaceplane really is.

Possible but unlikely. But I do want to highlight what it really is and just as sci-fi and makes the idea even cooler in theory; it may be capable of say manueving over an area very quickly (and delivering a laser shot), the vehicle is a more akin to the first space fighter. Can assume almost any inclination needed to intercept an enemy satellite. It skims the atmosphere for a few moments to redirect itself into a new orbit. This is good for space warfare. Now it's good for other things, remote sensing, perhaps even ground effects. But it is no crossbow nor would a laser of effective power ever be able to be fit or powered in a small payload bay as the X-37B has for a long time, even chemical. But we can hope.

@@econogate For certain applications, sure. But to be able to reach _anywhere_ on the planet? Space may not be absolutely necessary, but it would be very useful. Actually, my full theory is that they've come up with a far better application for Crossbow: causing rocket launches to "mysteriously fail". It occurred to me in 2012, with this sequence of events: * I skim an article about the mysterious X-37B being on one of its record-setting long-duration missions. * North Korea defies the world by conducting one of their "satellite launch"/ICBM tests. But the rocket explodes just a few miles up. * China has a rocket launch scheduled for a few days later, but they postpone it. * The X-37B lands. * China launches their rocket, successfully. * A while later, in a Presidential debate, Romney is criticizing Obama for "letting" NK do that launch, and it comes to me in a flash: "Oh, shut up, a......, who the f... do you think shot it down!?" (No, I'm not serious about all this. Except... does kind of hang together, doesn't it?)

A cryogenic excitation crystal core laser of such high energy intensity and aperture was Patented as a "Gamma Ray Laser" before such film was made.

About a decade ago (must have been almost exactly a decade, come to think of it, because it was during the 2012 election campaign), I noticed a series of news stories: (1) We'd been hearing about how the USAF's mysterious X-37B spaceplane had been in orbit for a record-breaking time (approaching 2 years iirc); its planned landing was delayed by a couple weeks. (2) North Korea attempted one of their satellite-launch / ICBM tests, but it exploded just moments after takeoff. (3) China delayed one of their rocket launches. (4) The X-37B landed. (5) China launched their rocket, successfully. (6) In a debate, Mitt Romney tried to attack President Obama over the North Korean missile test; before even realizing I was thinking it, I heard myself shout at the TV, "Oh, shut up, asshole, who do you think shot it down?!?!" Hence, my new favorite crazy conspiracy theory: the X-37B is in fact the "Crossbow Project", pretty much as seen in "Real Genius", but they've found a much better use for it.
