This is a look at the process of developing art for the Hearthstone expansion about Kobolds and Catacombs. I spent about 10 total hours on this piece, which is pretty normal. It was done entirely in photoshop. Blizzard outsources all of the artwork for Hearthstone except for UI and some of the promotional artwork. While I did work on Warcraft during the Burning crusade years, the style of Hearthstone has changed a lot over the years.

Very cool painting. I love your process videos especially when you talk about your struggle. It makes me feel less frustrated and thinking that I’m not the only one facing these stuff.

This is gorgeous! It's been a while since I played, but every time I played, I wondered how the cards get designed. Do you also do the animations for the golden cards, or is it sent off to someone else in the process?

Hi Trent, just a quick question, I was wondering how long you are given from the initial concept to finished art by the client, I am a children’s book illustrator and I am constantly up against a really tight deadline, so much so that I find it affects my final illustrations, I can have a whole book to rough out then fully paint and I am sometimes only given two or three weeks (that’s the extreme) but does happen, I am getting more and more fiction work ; covers etc, but just wondered how long you are given, for instance this project? Kind regards Dan

Roughing out a whole book and fully painting it in two to three weeks... Now that's rough. If it's really small not so detailed illustrations I can kinda understand. I'm also wondering how long Trent's given and what kinda terms or agreements he gives his clients.

Nice work ! Why did you not put a slight curve in the stick the elf is holding, i think it would have shown more pressure on the stick, and would help to see the danger of the situation !

Hey Trent in the career line you’re in what is more valued ? A degree in Graphics design or a degree in Illustration?

Ethan Barrett Yes, I'm contemplating this as well. I think it's Illustration.

I'm currently working as a Graphic Designer i'm pretty sure it's Illustration. Most companies have their designated go to artist already established. The thing is Graphic design usually deals more with advertisements, so really think about. If you like drawing characters, concept art and all that jazz. Than go Illustrator. I actually hate Graphic design because well I don't like making ads. I like creature design, experimenting and getting lost monotonously texturing things. Personally when it comes down to it. It's not what is most valued in a career line. It's what you value in or well enjoy most doing that should be the deciding factor, because the last thing you want is hating what you love.

I'm thinking about pursuing a career in that field. I'm close to finishing up in college, my last few months and assignments etc. Afterwards I need to make an application (when I have the motivation to type out the first few letters of my document lel), said application to a university with a suitable course. I was hoping that Illustration would be the idealistic one, I revolve around working in a similar kind of way that Trent does, it's my strongest point more than anything else, really. Problem is, it's a tough industry to get into from what I've heard, let alone one that's the easiest to uphold and suitably thrive on.
