Unless that’s the gimmick. Even then, you still need to be well-versed in other art styles to make it work (especially with frame rates). It’s not a video game, but Learning with Pibby is a great example.

I know nothing about Stone Story RPG, but I think you are really underestimating the artistic skill that goes into that ASCII art. Conveying as much as possible with the minimal amount, is a sign of a good artists.

Not to mention doing it in 1bit black and white. I'm sure the dev spent countless hours making sure the screen doesn't turn into a complete mess when many objects are on screen.

As an artistically talentless muggle struggling to learn the ropes of the ancient magic we call pixel art, this video really speaks to me. I think I am still going to spend time to develop this skill as I really like that art style, but i feel as if my mind has been expanded to a lot of other options as well as reframed to understand whats really important: gameplay > aesthetic.

A varient of low poly Ive been playing around with is mimicking the graphics of the original SNES star fox but in a modern engine and high frame rates. I find it works if your game doesnt rely on human or organic looking things, and more mechanical looking things. If something can be represented using a simple prism type shapes you can get some interesting results thay make your game look supet clean. Its like a happy balance between primitive shapes in 3D and what we normally call lowpoly (which is actually high poly).

Thanks! I'm finally getting to the point where I need to start thinking about art. I've had the idea the whole time I could only do pixel art but now that I've bought a screenless tablet, I want to try my hand at drawing stuff. I really like watercolor and how the old Pokemon pictures looked. So I might try working on that. RIP all the 2D assets I've bought. LOL! But I can probably use them as reference when drawing my own stuff.

rotoscoping is no way easy. You need a graphics tablet to do that properly and make it look presentable. Moreover you need to know how to draw to make eyes and stuff. It just adds a kind of an effect that makes it look peculiar and makes people try it. It makes making frames of animation easier thats it
@puppeli6 ай бұрын
True. Rotoscoping is a skill and if you want to do line art, you prolly need a graphics tablet. But if you went for *simple flat shaped vector art* ("Out of This World" (1991)) or *pixel art* look (original "Prince of Persia" (1989)), nearly anyone could do it. Or at least i have tried to mimic those styles (especially OoTW), and it was relatively easy. The only stumbling blocks for me, have been that i get the urge to add too many details, and ruin it. Another problem i have is the difficulty of keeping a contrast between the characters and the background. I often resort to using gradients, thats making it more complicated (and time consuming) than OoTW's art style.. But i was trying to make comics in that style. If one made animations (or game graphics), the fact that characters are moving, would help the characters pop out of the background more. Also if you carefully select the background to have contrasting colors to the characters, that could also work.
@TackerTacker4 жыл бұрын
VVVVVV wouldn't work today. Stone Story RPG is everything but simple, it would be much simpler to create a decent pixel art look than to create something even close to this level of ASCII art. With the rest I agree.
@reaperzeero2 жыл бұрын
I agree, the level of creativity/talent needed to do something like Stone Story RPG is quite high on the "artsy" scale. The idea is "simple" but the execution is very difficult.
@Silver-hi1ky2 жыл бұрын
Arguably ASCII art is even harder than pixel art due to how limited you are with animation as well, imagine trying to make anything but a stickman with those characters

Some art styles I think would be great for 3D: Basic Shapes which carries over from 2D. Unless you need custom shapes, you won't even need to leave your game engine of choice. Low Poly This might be a bit trickier but PS1/N64 style Voxel You can even apply some shader or texture work to make it a little more unique too

I've gone with simple 3D objects for my game. Cubes and cylinders go a long way towards a cohesive art style. It's also worth noticing the little details that your brain filters out when analysing low-fi games, such as the cool background that 140 has which I'm guessing moves in time with the music? Those things add so much to the look and feel of your game. Also are you an NZ game dev? Cos me too.

Bonus style: 3D modelling. You'll be surprised how easier than hand drawn or pixel art illustrations it is, although it requires more work, especially on the animation department. First person 3D puzzle games where there aren't many animations other than doors opening, cubes/furniture moving and buttons/levers, you'll have an easier time making the 3D models yourself and getting free textures from the internet.

Animating your own art can be hard. I say Start with the initial pose then make the ending pose. Then create a Middle pose. Then you can add more frames and make minor tweak to get the the mid point or end of animation. Remember you can slowly make adjustments as you get better. When you need a break from animating do some programming and vice versa.
