Janissary/ Yeniçeri was a member of the elite infantry units that formed the Ottoman Sultan's household troops and the first modern standing army in Europe. The corps was most likely established during the Viziership of Alaeddin under Sultan Orhan.

The way I had heard about " jannisary " was that it meant " Jan Nisary" i.e. self-sacrifice meaning oath of giving life when needed. It was comprosed mostly of new Muslims
