Fun fact: the flamethrower at 4:55 is called The Blaster and it actually has an interesting backstory. It wasn’t some crazy, unhinged mod, it was an actual defense mechanism meant to deter carjackers in South Africa. More importantly, it was LEGAL. See, back in the late 90’s, Johannesburg was the violent crime capital of the world, particularly in carjackings at stop lights. The Blaster was created as a lethal defense mechanism, since the carjackings more often than not resulted in the death of the driver. The South African government ruled that the sale and use of the Blaster was 100% legal on the grounds of self-defense. The only problem was it was super expensive, not counting the custom bodywork required to install it. About 50 units were sold, but poor sales meant it was discontinued a few years later.

So having lived in JHB in the 90's, I'll confirm that this device was NEVER legal in South Africa, it merely took advantage of a loophole in the local legislation. There was a lot of 'hot' 😜 debate around it when it made headlines, only to be confirmed by the SAPS that such devices were completely illegal. It was then replaced by another completely legal version that deployed pepper-laced paint instead.

It's kinda wild that, in the US "Oh yeah, that just broke" is an excuse that works on the cops - here in Australia, the cops will stick a Yellow Sticker on your car that basically indicates "this car better be driving to the mechanic to get fixed, and nowhere else" if you say that.
@Jay22222
@Jay22222 3 ай бұрын
In both countries, as with anywhere else, it’s completely dependent on what’s broken and the attitude of both you and the cop. In my opinion your explanation of “the yellow sticker” is completely incorrect. Your car being defected will cost you at minimum, $1000 And removing/tampering with the large sticker in the middle of the windshield isn’t just civil, it’s a criminal offense that will also cost you several thousand more dollars. I think you’ve misinterpreted something somewhere. A cop might use their discretion to “allow” some sort of infringement on the premise that you are driving without detour to immediately address some issue but it’s not a right, you’d be foolish to take it for granted or mess about as even if being “permitted” you’re still taking a big risk.

In Germany it works like this: if the police think your vehicle has been illegally tampered with, the driver has to show papers confirming that the modifications have been officially approved. If he is unable to do so, the vehicle is taken to an expert who checks its roadworthiness. The driver may not use his vehicle again until it is in the legally permitted condition. They will also have to pay a fine for driving an unauthorized vehicle. In the event of an accident, they may also lose their insurance cover.

The "road-worthiness" of cars is under much more stringent rules in general. There's so, so much stuff I've only seen online from the US, because it'd get you a ticket the moment any cop saw you. In fact, when I heard that "limos" made in the garage by Frankensteining your car (or I guess your car and at least one other) are generally legal in the US, I couldn't believe it. On one hand, the freedom of being able to do basically whatever you want with your car sounds awesome. On the other hand, when I'm going 240km/h on the Autobahn, I really appreciate knowing all cars around me can be trusted not to fall apart spontaneously.

I'm a police officer near Houston, those wire wheels are really popular around here and, while not "illegal" in and of themself that car would get stopped fast by an officer who really knows traffic/DOT laws. It's blatantly over 84" wide, so it requires clearance lights. If it's over 104" it's overwidth and requires a wide load permit. From how much of the interstate lane he's taking up I'll bet he's over 104" wide. Instant tow truck, and because he's violated CMV laws the fines can be several thousand dollars. The judge may let him off easy, but they can ram it to him too. The pickup with the white lights would get a ton of tickets, but he'd lose out to the squatted Tahoe. That Tahoe has so many violations it's probably getting impounded too.

Some states in the USA have mandatory yearly safety inspections, most do not. Ask, what do those inspections accomplish? How often will a yearly safety inspection tell the driver something they didn't already know, or motivate them to fix a car that they weren't already going to fix? Is the benefit actually worth the cost of all that bureaucracy? Most states calculate the answer as "no it's not." That's not because of "disregard for everyone's lives" -- it's because they did the math and that's the answer.

I've seen a toned-down tasteful version of the "rave brake lights" you analyzed, and if they're handled well they're great. Basically, instead of the wild and random lights they do a standard soft-red for braking, a light-show-style sweep of lights left or right for turn signals, which is SHOCKINGLY effective at indicating how they want to turn, and best of all a brighter red with a single flash if they do a hard brake suddenly. In other words, the tech that allows for the kinda-dumb light show Can Be Used For Good.

@@stevenwork95 no, just that Canada was absolutely brutal with a 'take no prisoners' and 'hurt them at every opportunity' in the world wars. A number new acts were added to what were considered war crimes due to Canada's barbarity.
