The European single market has existed since 1993, prior to that, no European standard existed. So that's pure bullshit ! This was just a Scandinavian car thing. Volvo and Saab were innovators trying to have the safest cars, and back then, lights were not as good as today. Sweden seems to have made it mandatory for a certain period. Now it seems that only fluid is used for that. But for the rest of the world, it was sold as an option.

4:31 perfectly sums up my problems with modern crossover suv's they're too big and heavy to be sporty, and they're way to high tech and overcomplicated to be useful for any kind of utility, so you just kind of end up with a swiss army knife of a vehicle that can do a little bit of everything, very poorly.
@Serenity_Dee4 ай бұрын
16:11 The Nucleon was only the second most terrifying idea for a nuclear-powered vehicle. Both the USA and the USSR experimented with nuclear aircraft, but they came to their senses before they went anywhere. The Americans never got past the R&D stage to build a prototype, but the Soviets built the Tupolev Tu-95LAL, which wasn't actually powered by the reactor, it just had a reactor running in the bomb bay while conventional engines actually powered the craft in order to test the shielding. (It wasn't quite sufficient and test crews fared poorly.)
@JimoftheSlim4 ай бұрын
The US very much did fly a reactor. Convair built the NB-36, which was a Peacemaker with a reactor on-board. It did quite a lot of flying and the reactor was operated safely. Both programs were canned more because the requisite size of the aircraft made them too slow to penetrate air defenses more than anything.

@darthmeow13704 ай бұрын
The idea was brilliant, thorium like Bob said is not very dangerous from a radioactivity standpoint and certainly won't kill you any less dead in a crash than a massive fireball of burning jet fuel. The tests were successful --they didn't have the reactors running the engines but they were operational while in flight so they could test if radiation shielding light enough to be airworthy could also be effective, and it was. There was no reason they could not have been built and flown safely. The project was canceled late in development because the ICBM (InterContinental Ballistic Missile) was invented rendering ultra-long range bombers for dropping nuclear weapons no longer necessary. If it had been completed and put into service, the tech would be in commercial airliners long before now and fuel costs would be incredibly low, countless tons of pollution wouldn't have been put into the skies, and a lot of people might have survived plane crashes with minor radiation sickness instead of being roasted alive in a kerosene fireball.

You'd think that a gyroscopically stabilized car would be awful to corner in as well. Not because the gyro can't go around the corner - it can, without any resistance other than inertia, but that's only true if it's perfectly vertical. This thing is a two wheeled vehicle that can't lean into a turn. Similarly, it's going to struggle mightily if the road itself is banked in a turn.
@aleks54054 ай бұрын
As stated before you need two gyros for the job. It wasn't cost effective on a train so I doubt we'll see it on a car anytime soon. Maybe it could have some uses in a big boat to avoid keeling over but I'm sure there's a reason why it's not used there either.

Yes it can lean into a turn. The Gyrocar had a system to move the gyro so the car would lean. You can find clips of the gyrocar driving on KZbin where it visibly leans. As a pilot, and a driver, there are a few more problems with a flying car. In an airplane, we actually steer with our feet. @@KernelFault if I remember correctly, there is a 50 hour inspection, 100 hour inspection, an annual inspection, and that’s not counting the routine maintenance that needs to be done. I will mention that the hourly inspections are based off of engine runtime so if you’re doing a four hour trip, there is nearly 1/5 of your allowed runtime on your engine already. Not to mention gas mileage is horrible. The best gph I’ve seen for small aircraft would be 11 gallons per hour, and that’s on a small two seat aircraft called the Ercoup
@Outworlder4 ай бұрын
@@varinrommel you don't remember correctly, unless you are in some country with different requirements . You just have annual inspections unless you are carrying passengers for hire(or flight instruction), then you need to do 100 hour inspections. Some flight schools do 50 hour inspections since their aircraft get pretty banged up but it's not required. There's a recommendation for 50 hour filter and oil changes, which are no more difficult than a car and can be done by the owner. I don't understand the tidbit about 1/5 of engine runtime or whatever. People do cross country flights all the time and spend days flying and just refueling and topping off oil. Engine TBO is around 1200-2000 hours, depending on engine. There are some aircraft that guzzle fuel, but small general aviation aircraft aren't them. The Ercoupe consumes 5 gallons per hour. A Cessna 172, which is a 4 seater, uses around 8 gph in cruise. The fuel efficiency for the 172 is roughly 15mpg. Which is not amazing, but consider the distance you cover in one hour, and that's without twists and turns and traffic or stop signs.

@@Outworlder I am going off of my flight school specs. I am an aviation student in the United States and I probably fly pipers more specifically the piper archer 3. they do about 11 gallons per hour. I’m going off of Colorado since that’s where I fly.

16:26 Bob's right (Bob is _always_ right...) It's the transduction from thermal neutron flux to kinetic energy that takes up most of the work. You're boiling water in order to get power out of a reactor, and water is _heavy._ Once we get aneutronic fusion licked, where the energy coming out of the reaction is electrically-charged particles instead of the heat coming from neutrons hitting matter, then we can see compact nuclear reactors be practical enough to run the flux capacitor installed in our flying DeLoreans.
@Garbox804 ай бұрын
I'd place my bet on low radiation batteries instead. Some easily replaceable units. In real life. Won't make a flux capacitor though 😁
@mfree802864 ай бұрын
@@Garbox80 If they do *anything*, unless there's a drastic breakthrough in physics it'll probably be a small TEG that just charges a standard lithium pack when the car sits. The current state of nuclear anything basically can't be shut off unless it's a critical mass, and then you're far too large for a land vehicle of any kind. So it needs to be small enough for heat rejection 24/7/365, since it's going to be pumping out the same heat load when parked doing nothing.

People have a tough enough time controlling a car in 2 dimensions - just imagine how many air accidents there would be when drivers had to navigate a third dimension! Also, can’t slam on the brakes or hit anything - bc then you fall out of the sky. It “works” in sci fi movies, but the logistics of making highways in the sky, and placing traffic signs and controls up there - it would just be a nightmare resulting in blocking out the sun for anyone stuck on the ground.

Yeah I just found it annoying how she called everything unconventional ugly or ridiculous. There was a point to all of those inventions, even the gyrocar, and just because something is odd that doesn't make it ugly. The gyrocar is just a typical sports car of the era narrowed to half the width because two wheels and aerodynamics. Also I get the feeling neither of them understand that 1950s concept cars were meant to showcase potential future technologies to get the public excited about the future of innovation in car design. The Nucleon didn't have to be possible at the time, it just captured the fascination America had with nuclear technology at the time and imagined what a nuclear car could be like if it could be made to work. Concept cars existed to be fun and imaginative regardless of whether they worked, they aren't failures at all. They were great publicity stunts and therefore a success.
