This is definitely one of the more emotional episodes of _SVU_ that they've ever done, and it was definitely more focused on Mariska Hargitay, who I do believe earned an Emmy for this episode. I do recommend reacting to some of the more recent episodes, which are not as emotionally pulled as this one.

SVU is more about the emotional side of the law, people aren’t going to be interested in a show where police officers go through their job basically and don’t care or aren’t bothered by the awful things they’re exposed to. And the acting is some of the best, what she’s talking about is the script writing and direction- not acting.

@@shootingcomet082 I'm sure it was, but sexually-based crimes are consistently more brutal and confronting and the emotion and passion from the detectives is arguably why it's had such longevity. If there was no reaction, you'd struggle to like the characters as much. It's also a little bit more realistic, I know quite a few police officers that really struggle with some of what they see on the job. Not trying to diss the original though, I just think that SVU has such a large fan-base because all of the characters are so humanised.

@@sharonshebangs3087 I agree, there were som sexually based crimes in the origninal, and even ones like kids burned alive, and the detectives had very little reaction and even made jokes throughout the case. I think the more personal aspects of SVU is what makes it better.

Mariska actually won an Emmy for this episode. What is even better about the acting is she got those reactions reading with a PA, as they didn’t record the audio of Maria at the same time as Mariska was acting. But watching this episode, being that it’s so emotional, may not have been the best choice (that would be like watching the William Lewis arc, which I’d love your thoughts on) when looking at how a particular character responds to these scenarios, especially Olivia Benson, because she tends to get emotionally invested in each of her cases. But that’s why we love her. She’s the cop I at least (I can’t speak for anyone else but me) wish was on my case when I finally had the courage to report.

Another thing that's unrealistic about this show is the defense attorneys. Literally every single defense attorneys are portrayed really negatively, it's kind of propagandistic. I know that's not the writers intent and all, but wow... Given how corrupt police are in this country, if you're in the Law and Order world, and you have been framed for a crime, you have been entrapped, or you have been arrested even when the police had no evidence to prove you did it, good luck finding a good, and ethical lawyer, because every one of the defense attorneys are basically greedy, selfish, shady, unethical, and scum sucking bastards, apparently. Pretty much every prosecutors are portrayed in a positive light, but some prosecutors in real life are known for doing the same shady things that the defense attorneys in this show are guilty of.

I think the question regarding *why* people watch true crime content is such a good one. For me personally, I do have a morbid fascination with crime, of course, but I think that in itself stems from the fact I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. My voice was never heard. At 15 I went to the police and my case was dismissed due to "Lack of evidence" (it never even made it to the courts), and by watching true crime, I kinda feel like I'm giving the victims a voice. Not that as an individual layperson I'm "worth" anything to the victims, it's more so that I'm a part of a community that hears the voices and remembers them. I wanted to be heard out more than anything. Yes, I wanted my abuser to face the consequences of his actions but for me, I wanted to be taken seriously. My whole life, especially as I was growing up, has been about fighting to be taken seriously (PTSD isn't the only thing I fight with, but that's irrelevant to this topic) and to be heard, and being dismissed still haunts me to this day (and I'm 30 as of writing this). Obviously I can't speak for other people that indulge in true crime, but I do imagine a lot of those people have either been victims of a crime, know someone that has been a victim or are trying to understand *why* some people go on to commit such atrocities. Sorry for the dark essay, I love you and your content so much and just wanted to participate I guess haha.

I will say, One thing I really hate about this show is it tends to always have the officers act like the person accused is guilty until proven innocent. There are several episodes where they should learn that they don't always have the right person. But yet the next case they still interrogate everyone like they know 100% for sure it's them. Like one episode I saw had the victim hold the alleged r*pist at gun point, kidnapped in an apartment until Olivia shows up. And yet, Despite the confession possibly coming from the fact that he'd be killed if he said nothing or having been beaten up by this woman, Olivia takes the woman's side and believes her and has the guy arrested after the whole ordeal. I also hate how the officers tend to let victims try and get away with crimes. Like with the one I just mentioned, Olivia was saying she shouldn't have been arrested because she killed someone. Another instance, a man beat up his old gym teacher or something until he confessed, filmed it and showed it to them. Despite the obvious crime being broken, they all sided with him, and I believe Olivia even suggested a lawyer that would help him out of avoiding time. It honestly just pisses me off how they act. I get that it's all for drama but I would honestly want them all fired if that's how they actually were

Oh wow, a birthday episode for me! (Shhh, ignore that it's 2021 now) SVU was entertaining to me when I would watch it after school in Jr. High (probably shouldn't have been watching it at 11 years old, but oh well), but consistently drove me crazier the more I became interested in forensics and how the actual law interacts with it. You're right that the "acting" isn't the best, but it's really more that the dialogue is often clunky and WILDLY emotionally dissonant for whatever the characters are supposed to be dealing with. The actual acting is usually good, and the bit characters with guest stars camp it up nearly every time. And yes, Ice T is the star. Mariska does a good job making you care about the characters of the detectives, but Ice T is the one that keeps it real. Your point about reacting emotionally to a victim vs the non-reaction to child p*rnography is relevant - I interned at a medical examiner's office and not only was I asked if I could handle the actual working with dead bodies, but also if I could handle the fact that I'd be cutting up what used to be a person. We all understood that an autopsy isn't something you take the chance of bungling because you couldn't handle it - there's no shame in saying you're not equipped to handle something as viscerally emotional as a deceased person. With detectives, that's even more pertinent; with an average autopsy your work wasn't tied to a criminal case, but as a detective everything you do needs to be above board legally (in theory; I'm sure we could all have a long conversation about how that actually plays out in reality). Cops in shows like this constantly complain of paperwork and red tape, but it's there for a reason! And getting emotional during every case doesn't help you make sure you've dotted all your i's and crossed all your t's so when the jackass goes to trial all your evidence doesn't get thrown out for violating proper procedure. Admittedly, I didn't study too intensively on evidence retrieval in school, but from what I am familiar with, you are absolutely correct. Any forensic investigator would go apoplectic at the state of that crime scene, especially if the victim had ended up dead and the destruction was for nothing. 'In situ' is always the golden rule I was taught, and not a damn thing at that crime scene was 'in situ' after they got done with it. (To readers: 'in situ' basically means 'in place', and is the idea that you retrieve your evidence as close to an 'in place' state as possible without using destructive measures) Also trying to get an accurate log! All crime scenes need to have an accurate log of who had access to a crime scene after it was discovered, when they had access, and how long they were there in order to preserve the crime scene and any evidence that gets taken from it, and with that many cops running around and presumably wandering off afterwards, I pity the officer trying to put together the initial log once the scene was secured.

If you go into a show or movie expecting it to be realistic in every single aspect then you’re going to be disappointed and if it was real then it would be very boring. But one thing I don’t understand is how someone can be emotionally unattached/emotionless and cold when actually working in something like the svu especially when it comes to kids. Good comparison of using technology in real life compared to how it looks in the movies. This kind of analogy works and is impersonal; I mean I would not be saying anything bad about Ice Tea right now. I wonder how I would react if I met a celebrity in real life. I would probably just say thank you. What can I say, I am a 70's child and TV and movies are a major part of my life. Still I had a successful career and did some good in the world. Out of retirement right now fighting for good causes in these troubled times. When the real world goes crazy my favorite crazy shows keep me sane. My profession; soldier; uniform; codified rules; manuals on norms, values and ethics; constant training, review and mentoring. Taught only lethal methods and rather quickly. Spent the rest learning all the ethics that comes with that. Are we our profession; lawyer, doctor, writer; or are we human first? Does TV rot your mind, or as Alec Baldwin said "ripens your brain like a soft banana, better for eating?" He was pretending to be an alien at the time. Do we make our movies and tv shows or do they make US? Does life make art or does art make life? There were certain details that were changed in the Law and order series. In every single series, they have cases that would’ve taken weeks or months to solve. They saw the cases in one hour, and so they had to change certain types of situations. There is one episode where the mom is in jail for poisoning her child, and the real case was exhibited in FBI files and forensic files. I found out that the real case was one where the mother had a baby while in jail and that child’s name is Ryan . The mother was pregnant when she went to prison, and if Ryan’s baby brother had not been born with the same genetic problems, that caused his brother to die, that mother would’ve been in jail for life. Law and order SVU, and all the other law and order series are very similar to the way they re-air cases that happened in real life. They also have to write embellishment to make it interesting for people to watch so I have found out what day exhibit in their show is it completely accurate. This doesn’t mean that the program is bad; it just means that people Who are watching the program to understand cases like these take days weeks months or year to solve and so the likelihood of SVU finding this little girl before she was dead is very very low and I would say that it’s less than 5% but they were found for alive. In fact, I think that the person who was actually doing the crime would’ve gotten away with that one, and that he also would’ve had to make a serious mistake to be caught. I know this because people whose crimes were committed 50 or 75 years ago weren’t found for 50 or 75 years. In fact, I found a case like that where the guy was in his 80s before they found it And he went to jail for murder and rape, and yet he had children and grandchildren and such like soul, law, and order SVU it’s not completely accurate when they are dealing with cases that need to be completed in one hour!

Not to be rude but dealing with a situation with a actual person hand to hand is much different than looking at inedible objects such as pictures for example you will have a different reaction if you was talking to the person hearing the pain they been through then looking at a photo that has no real emotional meaning it is harder or not as difficult seeing a picture then of actually hearing a person cry out it’s just basic human empathy. And everyone is differently built.
@LeejaMiller

Totally!!! I couldn’t do it. I’m just saying if you’re going into the business of dealing with crime victims (in the special victims unit) it’s gonna be exhausting if you react like that to every awful story you hear from a crime victim. Also in my (albeit limited) experience working with lawyers and FBI agents who deal with sensitive cases like this, there’s a certain amount of distance they have to keep emotionally from their cases just for self preservation. But yeah absolutely true that experiencing that in person would be so hard
@ingrid6295

@@LeejaMiller The thing is that they get emotional depending of their context and the victim, some case are more personal for them the others. Of course is a serie but it is important to be aware that stressing situations can be handle different for the same person because we don't feel in the same way everyday.

The acting I think is good. Mariska hargitay ( olivia ) for this episode won an emmy for this particular episode. It's so good that when I first watched this episode I was on the edge of my seat wondering how the hell they would find the girl ( I def knew after all of this olivia would find her just had no clue how with the phone not being able to be traced ) also what's great about the show is that they try to stop a murder before it's too late. If u strongly believe someone is in the process of committing a crime I know their is a law that they can break in without a warrant. Unfortunately many cops wait til the crime is over.

On the GPS thing, pretty much anyone can spoof their GPS data on the phone. Some low end apps just spoof it on what the cell phone sees, thus carriers would still see true data. But even the true data can be spoof fairly easily.

Ha ha ha second comment: 2:02 Hey, it's really not fair! I just discovered these videos, I start watching just to spend some free time on KZbin, I mean, what can go wrong? Right? Then suddenly at 2:02 that magical moment when she asks: "What's wrong with us?" Did she really ask that? Omg, she's so right! But wait, I'm guilty of watching not only both Law and Order shows (SVU and Criminal Intent), but also Criminal Minds and CSI (yes, all of them). Please, real lawyer, don't do these things to your audience! Well, you already did, so now I'm worried, thank you for that.

Okay, okay, okay, but hear me out: shows like SVU are like the “safe” way to get your crime kicks. The acting and plots are ever so slightly out of the “reality” realm so you don’t have to worry about getting too attached/deep, and since it’s not true crime, it’s like a puzzle without the “oh shit this happened to a real person” Ya know? 😆

i think we are obsessed with crime cuz some of us want to commit them as humans do. but we don't. though, we do live in a world where people do commit vicious crimes. we live amongst them. makes us want to see it on screen to know what to do, how to act, what the killers do, etc. and then we can talk about it!
