Real Life - Commando. This one-hour documentary follows a troop of Royal Marines recruits through some of the toughest military training in the world. Shows a less PC picture than 2003's 'Green Beret' and 2007's 'On The Front Line'.

Old school Sgt, new school recruits. I feel for all of them, I went through Basic and Battle School in '88 in the Artillery. The exact way I felt 7 years later when I instructed. Felt lost.

Did anyone else inwardly cheer at 03:02 when he got onto the rope? I was rooting for him so much!

Regains were the only test I didn’t pass at first attempt. It really is all technique and hip flexor strength. I tried again the next day after some coaching from the troop PTI and nailed it. I was so glad to get that right heel hooked over the rope, 17 years later I still remember the sheer relief.

As you correctly said both units are very good, and are recognised as one of the finest units in the world. The training is very similar between the Royal Marines and Paras. But ive gotta say the Royal Marines training is longer and slightly harder than the Paras RM training is 32 weeks Paras is 28 weeks i think. But nobody can argue the fact that both these units are among the worlds finest. Hope this helps!

Beasting is part of the psychological training. Being a Royal Marine commando requires a psychological state. If an individual cannot handle beasting they are not of standard required to be Royal marine commando. If they cannot complete commando tests they are not of the standard. They may make it in other military roles but not as a Commando.

I have alot of respect for how this lt col lindley think's, any man that see's common sense that battering and beastings constantly are not the answer. What one needs to think of is, those individual's that improve with beasting's, would also improve without them. The fear of being binned is enough, some people do not meet the mark regardless of beastings, it's an old method simply way outdated. The man will either be up to the standard or he won't, beasting people constantly, will not change that.

Nicely nicely lets all hold hands and rub each other's shoulders isn't going to prepare them for war, where things are chaos and where they stand a reasonable chance of being captured and held by the enemy. You are meant to realize that it isn't fair and you are being made to do stuff, but it is just stuff. And no-one is going to come and give you a Gold Star for good behavior. IT's preparing you for War.

I mean, physical proximity, cultural/linguistic proximity also play a part. Both are rainy, maritime, diverse, laid-back but disciplined trading nations. French are too bureaucratic. Germans literally invaded in living memory.

@JamieN1690 ever guessed why SAS selection is 'a thousand times harder' ? as I said, it boils down to self discipline. In the Commando brigade and parachute regiment you aren't allowed to give up by your superiors in SAS/SBS selection wether or not you stop moving is entirely down to you.

No its cuz i respect my dad so much and yeh he was a marine, so he is tough. He fought in the Falklands war and to be honest i respect him for it. Hopefully i just wana do the same thing he did and if it takes loosing both my legs in Afghanistan or where ever then so be it. Im not that sort of person who goes around thinking he's hard, but people who say shit about people who do amazing things deserve abuse!

i wouldnt say 99% of SF are Marines or paras. most of them/ the ones the SAS prefer to have are Engineers since they have broader skills. HOWEVER i do agree with you since most of these engineers do all arms courses as a sort of 'tester' to see how they could possibley handle. one bloke called Tommy Tobin who was at the battle of mirbat was from the catering corps. (just proff to say that anyone can do it with the right frame of mind) no disrespect intended btw. (if you felt it)

Brutal, same as Pathfinders and SBS. RM basic training however, is the toughest basic in the World. Their officers have to pass this course before they can train as a Rupert, the process takes a mind boggling 16 months.

The SA80s as good as any supposedly, especialyl after the upgrade, it was made for use in England and N.Ireland though, not sandy places. I dont know about these things really, but im guessing someone in the MOD is switched on enough to know why we are still using it....i hope!

At a certain point there has got to be a point of diminishing returns. How much is training going to help you when you accidentally step on an IED and get your whole body blow to bits. At a certain point this sort of character building exercise is useless.
