My adult children actually did an intervention with me...and my food pantry. We took everything out. (They threw away ALL my expired food!) Knocked out all the old shelving-- killed all the pantry moths. Scrubbed and repainted the walls. Then we went to IKEA and got kitchen cabinets with no doors and remade the space. I then got clear bins from The Container Store. The result was EPIC! I think I will be able to keep it uncluttered for the rest of my life! (I will try to figure out how to send Cas a video of the finished product.

What I did this summer is really pull the neighbors together. I have a projector that I use for the holidays - you know Halloween (My favorite holiday) and Christmas. Anyway, my next-door neighbor has an 11-year-old girl and the people across the street have 2 boys. They always play in my yard and use the basketball net as my son just turned 19. I have done movie night at my house. The first one was in the front yard through the window and my neighbor asked if I could make the screen bigger, so the next one was in the back on the garage door. We saw King Kong-Skull Island and then King Kong vs Godzilla New Empire. It's so much fun we grab lawn chairs, snacks, drinks, blankets. We do this on a Friday or Saturday weather permitting - since I have to work those are the days that I can stay up late. It's like a drive-in without driving. Even my 19 yr. came at the end of the first movie and was totally upset that we didn't tell him about the second one right away. He came with a friend. Everyone had a great time and just a fun way to enjoy summer and bring neighborhood together. Here is to more fun summer times together.

Cas, thank you so much for featuring my visual kitchen. It made my day! The mug wall is a display of my mugs from trips to different countries. It’s an accent wall in my kitchen, not my everyday mugs, those are inside a cabinet. The shoe organizer with snacks in my pantry is on the inside of the pantry door, the outside is just a white door. My kitchen is for a family of 4 and we cook ALL the time. I love kitchen things and yes, I make use of every inch! My butterfly husband also cooks and my pre-teen boys also fully use it. Having it organized this way makes it easy for the whole family to put things away behind a door or inside a drawer but still super visible and easy to put away, using turntables and baskets with no lids, easy to drop things into them. I didn’t submit videos yet of parts of my house that I’m the only user, those are more ladybug type for bathroom and a mix of ladybug/bee for my office, I would say. I love your videos, Cas!!

I just started putting it away - unsorted to clean up the space and save myself hours. Just had to let go of it being perfect. My mother would buy the girls matching or coordinating outfits and I would try to keep those together as well; but had to move to just a tops drawer and bottoms (skirts, shorts, pants) etc. and let them choose. I was the working parent and my husband was the stay at home Dad. He didn't care about Grandma's matching outfits and neither did the girls. We just had to find what worked for us.

My spouse and I enjoy driving out of town and choosing random country roads to drive down (have a full tank of gas) - the scenery is often epic and sometimes we stop and take photographs of beautiful landscapes and sunsets or open fields with beautiful barns, etc. You can always find your way back with GPS, but when starting out, it's kind of fun not to know where we're going. We also hold hands and talk a lot and it often makes us feel closer - there's time to talk through things that are important to us, without our dogs barking and the phones ringing, etc. If you take the kids, the dynamic may not be hand holding with Joe and talking, but still, it's cheap entertainment if you like just spending time with family. BTW, we always end the roadtrip by stopping to get a treat somewhere. Usually ice cream..

Over the last year, i have been systematically decluttering and putting in organisation features in the home, which has made a massive difference. Our favourite has been our landing zone and taking off zone. We have a box each by the door to dump the little bits and bobs in, and i have a zone where i leave my things for leaving the house, so its an easy grab and go. As an agoraphobic, this has made leaving the house much easier as i don't lose everything constantly. The house is also much tidier and therefore easier to clean! Its nice to see another organised butterfly! My best friend is a cricket, so sometimes its hard not to compare myself to her! Love this and hope you do more.

I developed PTSD a little over five years ago from a category 5 hurricane that decimated my area and heavily damaged my house (everything is still being rebuilt, including my house). It came with a rather unexpected side of agoraphobia that I am still learning to manage (the pandemic certainly slowed the process). I'm currently having to live in an extremely chaotic environment that is a daily reminder at every turn of the event. Are there any other organizational changes you have made that you have found helpful with getting out the door? You're the only other agoraphobic that I've run into so far. So, any ideas are greatly appreciated.
@Holly_hamigakiko5 ай бұрын
@@TheReflectivePerspective biggest thing is more emotional self organising. The day before I leave the house, I discuss with myself (I know it sounds mad, but this is what my therapist suggested!) what’s going to happen. Eg okay, tomorrow you are going out the the museum. You have done this before and you have been safe. You will… ‘ and then run through the events. You then say that’s it’s okay if it’s scary and then list how you will cope (I go to one side and breathe). I also give myself an exit strategy so I know how I can leave. If I am going out alone, I have my headphones charged and ready and pre pick something to listen to with a backup in case I change my mind. I pre plan my outfit and pack my bag. By doing this the day before, it means I don’t have the extra emotional stress on the day I leave. When I leave, I soothe myself out loud saying things like ‘I have checked the oven is off, the doors are locked. The house is safe’ as speaking out loud feels a bit more like someone is reassuring you and you tend to be kinder that way! I have made sure I think about everything I need and they live in my landing zone or in my handbag so I’m not stressed about if I’ve lost things! Leaves the emotional energy for soothing. Other than that, I have a set time I have to be there. I like to be punctual so if I say I have to get to the supermarket by 5pm, it helps trick me into thinking I have to leave for that time rather than delaying. It is tough and annoying - especially as I want to go out places (and do if my safe person is with me) but by myself is just trickier. Be kind to yourself with it and praise yourself for every step. Reddit has a good agoraphobia group that may be of help. Good luck. Xx

I've often thought I am a bee because everything has a set place and I'm quite picky about putting things back in the exact right spot. I don't necessarily need to add dividers to a drawer if the items are quite large but they do get put back in the same place, in the exact same order every time. I organise for efficiency not necessarily looks although I do like seeing my stuff and my attempts to put things in a set order is one way that I like to make things visually appealing over say hiding everything in a basket like a cricket might. I also leave stuff out on purpose to remind me to take action on it. I need that visual reminder. So I have everything packed away nicely and then there are these neat little "don't forget me" piles. The couple of books on my desk that I need to read. The little stack of video games that I want to find time to play at some point. The neatly folded top that I need to sew. I see these paper trays and pretty wall baskets that people use to hide paperwork until they get around to sorting it and that doesn't work for me. I need the irritating little pile of paper to spur me on to dealing with it so I can get rid of it.

Love the video and seeing everyone's spaces and hearing about what gives away their bug style. You also asked about fun things to do. This summer instead of going on vacation we decided to do a staycation where we slept at home each night, but went somewhere within about 1 1/2 hrs or less of home each day. Here is a line-up of things we did... Day 1 visited a local covered bridge, played in the water and ate at a local restaurant we'd never tried. Day 2 visited a regional nature center that has animals native to the area (bears, wolves, otters ,etc) Day 3 visited the children's museum and state museum. Day 4 visited a local petting zoo and ate at another restaurant we've been wanting to try. Day 5 visited a local state park swimming area and playground. Both of our kids said at different times during the week that they thought they like this better than a vacation because we did so much! We had a great time with them, our son in law and of course our beautiful grandbaby, plus we saved a ton by sleeping at home instead of renting a house or hotel!

Cas, I cannot thank you enough for including different styles in the craft areas. I've hated my design studio for decades, and I thought it was because it's the rear entry to the house and the family uses it for dogs, boots, jackets, and ALL THEIR STUFF. I now am inspired to use some of the examples from your video to help make it a calming space. I'm a cricket that's been using clear containers that I've just had lying around. I realize now, as a cricket, I need to rest my eyes by deciding on white, perhaps, or translucent containers, with more uniformity. Plus, I've never used labels, but now I think I might. In addition, I'll look in thrift stores for china cabinets or armoirs for storage, instead of using large plastic tubs. Someday I'll be able to afford installing kitchen cabinets for that uniform look.

Something you have to try this summer. I am terrified of heights and this summer I decided to swing from the rope swing out into the lake. (A rope tied to a giant tree where a little deck was built that you jump from and swing out over the water) Last year I almost froze with fear and had to get my husband to help. This year I grabbed onto the rope myself and swung out over the water and jumped in the lake. And then did it again! I’m 54 and can’t wait to do it again next year

I know I am a ladybug. That is my dream style. That being said, I was forced to become a butterfly because my husband is a butterfly. As Cass says is just easier to revert to his style because he is a visual organizer. Now that most of the shared spaces are organized for a butterfly, he is able to easily put his and my stuff away. I still do my ladybug style in my areas like my closet and in my bathroom but the rest of the house is organized for a butterfly, and now it stays relatively clutter free. I actually have grown to love the butterfly style, but I do try to keep colors consistent so I get a little bit of visual simplicity. As for anything that has to be out, I try to find the prettiest items that serve the purpose. I do also use opaque bins on our open shelves to reduce visual clutter but it is still out and easy to put away.

have to admit looking at the cricket space just made me relax so much, I was stressed looking at the others, nothing wrong with them, they were just not me, where as the cricket I was like ahhhhh that makes sense

Loved seeing people's spaces! I really like the use of toilet paper or paper towel rolls to hold cords together. Very practical. This video reconfirmed that I'm mostly a cricket with a few bee tendencies. I lean towards minimalist, so I declutter regularly and keep only what I love and/or what's useful. I'm currently working on swapping out things that I need for others that are visually appealing to me. For instance, I want to get rid of my fake leather sofa and replace it with one that's equally as comfortable but much more beautiful. I'm also extending the depth of my window ledges and adding some beautiful wall shelves and scratchers so that I can get rid of the ugly cat trees. A little at a time as I save the money.

I’m a cricket… kinda visual kinda hidden but micro categories… I like clear bins… and labeled detailed… I like want to know exactly what I have in my space. It’s neat as my husband and I took your test on your website and BOTH of us are crickets!! I was always organized but since downsizing it’s been crazy! We are in a much smaller home and while I should have done this a long time ago, “don’t judge me,” I’m at least doing it now! Fitting only what fits well into a container is hard… I love too many of my things!! 😂😂 gonna keep going through my things… with hope my husband will get in the grove and purge some of his stuff. For now, I will continue with my own stuff… and try to only better organize things that are not mine. Thanks so much Cas!! You’ve opened my eyes to quite a bit and understanding myself and my husband has been very enlightening!!

I love seeing all the different craft spaces. I am a true cricket but when it come to my craft-sewing room I like many things visual than I normally would, like a pegboard that holds cutting tools, spools of threads. I also have all my fabrics visible but they are all folded the same size and organized by color. Just looking at all the beautiful fabrics just makes me smile.

Have done something this summer that was well worth it. Not fun but very satisfying. My husband and I are painting the exterior of our home - not my idea. I am 68 years old and my husband is 65. It has saved us a ton of money but has taken us most of the summer because of weather delays. It has been rewarding. Not sure I would recommend it but good for us.

Loved this video!! I hope to see more Butterflies' and Bees' styles (so I can see more ideas!) if you do more of these in the future! 😀 Unfortunately for me, *WORK* is where my June and July went (UR!!), but I'm going to an arts and crafts show with a friend this Saturday that I haven't been to in _years_ because of work! Hope you take some time to enjoy the rest of your summer, too! Edit: P.S.... You brought back a treasured memory for me when you talked about the drive-in. 😊 When I was a kid, my mom would pop a huge kettle of buttered popcorn, put it in a paper grocery bag, and dad would drive us all to the local drive in... us kids would be all comfy in our pajamas, and because it would often be late when we got back home, we could easily climb right into bed without having to change our clothes! I miss those simple times! 😊 🍿

This was the best video on how to organize for a cricket! I have struggled for years, not knowing how to make it work. I’m excited to get organizing with clear pencils and cosmetic cases. In my purse, I use plastic bags. Haha. And in my makeup case, I use plastic bags to hold all the lip colors that go together. And example would be the lip liner, the lipstick, and the lip gloss. Then I put all those individual lip color bags into one big plastic zip bag. Haha. Then I do a bag for face, and a bag for eyes. Hehe. 😅

My (UK mum life & free) highlights of the summer holidays so far, have been: 1. Doing the library reading challenge with kiddo - his first one since finally being able to learn to read&write. I'm so proud of the amount of effort - and progress! - he's made this year 💗 He's nearly 8, with AuDHD (dual diagnoses) and is now a keen reader 🤩 2. Our local museum made 2 town history trails, so we had fun walking around and spotting the blue signs on historic buildings... I even found out that my family's "local" (pub that we go to) is actually nearly 500years old! It's mind-blowing to have so much local - and national - history on our doorstep, and I'm keen to teach it to my son, as my family have lived here for 100years. We've also booked a mini trip to Cheddar Gorge for the end of August, which I'm really looking forward to! Hubby and our boy haven't been yet, so I can't wait to share it with them and see what they think of the caves full of amazing stalagmites, stalagtites and a tonne of cheese! 😂💗 ... No really, they mature the cheese inside the caves, and the town of Cheddar is what it's named after! There's also the cliff walking trail above the caves (which I haven't done before), and the lovely museum of prehistory across the road 💗🤓 Definitely recommend it to anyone visiting the area (in between Bristol and Glastonbury - I love the Southwest of England!!)

My summer trip this year was to Boston, meeting up with a bunch of friends. We very quickly decided never again in a city 😂 While it was close to a few of the friend group, we did a lot of city driving, and that was Not Fun, haha. I did learn on the fly a few tricks to help with overstimulation, though, namely earplugs in crowded areas- they don't even have to be special ones, though silicone is easier to clean than foam- and stepping out for "smoke breaks" just to step away from the (delightful, yet overwhelming) situation for a bit. The problem being I don't actually smoke, so I don't have an internal timer nagging me that I need to step out 😂 Turns out I've been compensating for this for years by "social drinking" (water, that is), so that my bladder can force me to step away for a bit. I usually struggle with hydration, not on that trip though 😅 All in all it was a fantastic trip, but I was so exhausted by the end of the week that I was as happy to be getting home as I had been to meet up with everyone. Next year we're thinking mountains instead of a city!
