Think of how many players don’t get recognition for how good they are during Balon D’or events but still attend. Most of the time it’s for the benefit of Real Madrid players in the past, the ceremony is a farce anyway but it’s amazing Rodri won it because now midfielders will be more recognised for their achievements.

9:26 - I used to play football for the REME (an Army Corps of about 10,000 people). I was pretty good, we all were on the team, probably better than a large portion of the country. We played a friendly against reading in 2001 when they were in the then division 2. It was like we were an under 12's team vs men. The difference was night and day. They were just faster and more accurate with their passing, better at tackling, positioning, everything. We lost 11-0. They never broke a sweat, their play was just that much more intelligent that they never needed to use their athletiscism. If that was Division 2, goodness knows how much better the premier league is. It's like a dog trying to judge how clever Einstein was.
@Howling-Mad-MurdockАй бұрын
Once played a friendly against a team of ex pros, and when I say ex they were in their 50s at least. We got battered. They barely broke into a run, it was exactly as you said, they just moved us around and always found space. It was so frustrating to play against cos no matter how hard you worked they just strolled around with their socks rolled down picking us off.
@sn-vj5wxАй бұрын
What about fitness? I thought that would have been one of the major factors too.
@hendy643Ай бұрын
@@sn-vj5wx We weren't unfit. We were all more than capable of running 8 miles with 55lb on our backs in about an hour, and doing 1.5 miles in about 8 minutes, give or take, person depending. That's about the same distance a PL player runs in a 90 minute match. Their sprinting speed was faster on average, but that didn't really matter. They pulled us around like plasticine and just needed to jog through the gaps. They just had a better "football brain", could see more steps ahead than we could, and could see passes and gaps where we couldn't, and they had the ability to exploit the gaps better than we could. When you're truly good at something, you make it look easy. So easy that even laymen think they can do it, even when they can't.

About how good players are, I always think of High Fidelity (the book), and the one chapter talks about how the worst player on the team, the one everyone even on the homeside heckle and moan about, has probably been one of the best players their whole life. The other thing is I think of Brian Scalabrine, who for those who don't know him was a bench player in the NBA, with an 11 year career. Because he was always off the bench and towards the end of games, never highly rated. He went on a tour after retiring from pro ball playing one on one to challengers and didn't lose. He's got a quote, "I'm closer to Lebron than you are to me."

I say it time and time again on the offside rule. With VAR, it's pixel and frame-perfect, thus removing the attacking advantage given by "benefit of the doubt". Offside traps are being set by accident! Wenger said something similar not long after VAR was introduced all those years ago. If you added maybe a 6 inches of tolerance, (pending some testing and adjustment over a couple of seasons), you could reintroduce the attacking benefit of the offside rule. No more offside lines drawn through "toes" or "ears", and accidental offside traps. If the whole foot is advanced, it's offsite. If it's a toe, it's within an attacking tolerance. If you want to set an off-side trap, you can, but the defenders have to intend for it. It would add the directness back into the attacking game, but also reward defensive tactics. Attacking and tactical entertainment would benefit IMO.

If Vini/Carvajal absolutely did not deserve the balon d'or, we would not have so many polarising opinions. Let's be serious. Many people dislike Vini and Madrid. Rodri got the award. Good for him. It's just a meaningless title at the end of the day. It no longer has value. Is Rodri really the best football player in the world? If you match him up against anyone, nine times out of ten, will he get the upper hand over them? City are awful without him and that's a sign that Pep's system isn't all that great. Why does it fall apart with a minor adjustment? Isn't City's B team supposedly capable of winning the league? They should be fine without a few players. The media championed City and every time Real won the UCL, they tried really hard to make it seem like they did not deserve to win.
