the 3pm blackout isn’t for massive clubs there are a lot more teams than those in the premier league who would suffer massive implications due to the 3pm blackout being reversed and anyone who thinks otherwise is completely clueless
@chrispalmer78932 күн бұрын
@ This has been studied and it was found that if the matches are on subscription TV channels the impact on crowd size is negligible (5% or less reduction). As no free-to-air channel has been able to afford live PL matches for years it’s not likely to have much of an effect (and the 5% reduction in ticket sales would likely be more than compensated by the fees paid to the clubs for the matches to be shown). There’s probably an argument for maintaining the blackout for the lower leagues, but there’s no good reason to have it for the PL.

If ticket sales are low the game is not broadcast. I find it hard to believe PL grounds would be empty if a game is on tv live. On Saturday morning US time I get to choose from all the games to watch live due to streaming.

The 3pm blackout myth that fans will stop turning up is nonsense imo. I'm a Liverpool fan so I know how hard it is to get a ticket for any Premier League game. If the issue is that season ticket holders wont turn up, for one they can sell their ticket now through the club. Secondly, if they failed to do that you could simply introduce a policy where if they don't sell their ticket and they fail to show up to x amount of games they'll loose their season ticket. It's as simple as that. Obviously this isn't the same for every club but Liverpool supposedly have an estimated 48 million fans according to Stadium Maps. The ground only holds 61,000 so that would mean that less that 1% of fans are getting into the ground. If the remaining 99% of fans (I know that's worldwide but a big chunk will be in the UK) can't watch the game using legitimate means, they're just going to watch a dodgy stream.

Also, non season ticket holders buy tickets in advance, so would go to games no matter what, and season ticket holders have shown their dedication with the initial outlay, thy're going to games. It's Premier League football, people are going to pack the stadiums.

3pm blackout is an outrageous hangover. it *might* affect lower league attendances some weeks but it would never harm prem attendances to repeal it. makes a mockery of laws against illegal streaming bc of course you will do it if it is the only way to see your team
@elephantjuice21833 күн бұрын
For the 3pm blackout, I very much doubt we would see a diminish in attendance. Why? Because we don't see lower attendances for all the games shown outside of that 3pm blackout. All games are sell-outs. Most PL clubs, if not all, have a paid membership system that has tens of thousands of people registered for a chance to attend a game. The only thing that it encourages, negatively in the interest of the PL and broadcasters, is the use of illegal streams or using a VPN to access another countries services. A modestly priced subscription system, similar to how Amazon handle their boxing day games, featuring every game, would be perfect. We can dream. The argument has always been that it'd impact the teams in the lower leagues, as they get attendance through PL supporters who are not able to watch their team, but surely that's less relveant today with those "other methods" becoming so commonplace.
@GravelordWrust3 күн бұрын
Gary, it's not bloody diminishing. How many people do you think there are in this country? The amount of people in the country is increasing vastly more than stadium capacities. You think the fans won't go to games because they're on TV? Fans around this country are rabid for their teams, man. Season ticket holders won't be taking a week off because they're televised. The fact that we don't have access to our league is atrocious. Stop this idiocy.
@RC-nv6rc3 күн бұрын
But if the lower leagues are not on TV they don't earn any money and don't get any exposure nobody will watch them which will make the difference in money between prem and low leagues even more massive and would destroy grass root football as it would be pointless to play for one of these lower teams for a career or to aspire to go up to the prem when it would literally be impossible😂

Talking about the blackout, and you guys saying it may diminish audiences at the games if they were on the telly, at the minute games get shown on TV and that doesn't diminish the crowd for those games at all, so why would adding a few more matches change that, it doesn't make any sense, obviously that's just my opinion but there's no way to prove one way or the other without actually doing it, I think the best solution would be to announce a trial for a season to see how it works and if it does diminish crowds scrap it after the year and go back to the blackout and if it doesn't happy days

This whole exchange at 5:07 is utter bollocks. The atmosphere in the stadiums is objectively getting worse, as ticket prices become too expensive for many, and also as allocation is sold to tourists and part time fans who are more interested in coming in and filming themselves on their phones. The idea that the country that invented football doesn’t show the top league’s games on TV is a joke. I used to live in South Wast Asia and I was able to watch every game live. Good times. I’m able to watch far less football now in the home of football
@callummc19883 күн бұрын
Have to disagree with the argument re 3pm blackout. Atmospheres at most Premier League grounds are already depleted by clubs pricing out the core fanbase. Most people can't afford to pay £80 every home game, and so are already finding other means to watch their team. Make tickets affordable and maybe then I would agree
@moonch153 күн бұрын
The 3pm blackout helps smaller clubs too. Some fans may support their local team and also a larger more well known team and if the premier league team was in TV at 3 would you bother walking down the road to your local side to watch semi professional football matches?
@kriissyy09ify4 күн бұрын
If you're for the 3pm blackout, your argument really shouldn't be attendances. There's no real proof to suggest it would harm attendances and most lower league clubs have strong fanbases. The argument should be an over saturation of content, which could make people less interested in watching games. There is actual proof of that happening with the NBA, where League Pass gives you access to every game. Ratings are down, despite social engagement being up.

To be fair to Newcastle since Howe has come in they have targeted the cups. They haven’t featured a heavily changed side in the cups other than Man U away when they had a lot of injuries. Spurs make too many changes. Agree with Gary, as a club who hadn’t won anything for years like Wigan I’d take a cup with relegation. Whether it be players, fans, managers or owners are we not all in football to win things? Thats why I personally think the Arsenal love in of only winning one cup in 5/6 years is overboard. Man U have been more successful under Ten Haag in 3 years. Yes it’s nice to qualify for the champions league, big nights for the fans and more money for the club but I’d rather win the FA cup than finish fourth and go out in the first stage of the champions league. Priorities are wrong at some clubs.

Back when the blackout was introduced, teams weren't the global powerhouses they are now. Even teams like Brentford, who haven't been in the top league for very long, have global fans. These people want to go and experience a match day but can't because of season ticket holders, the wait list to get one, and overall pricing so if Alan is so worried about the weather, someone else who has traveled can replace them because some rain wont put them off. The PL could benefit financially from TV companies who have bought the rights to air even more games. I don't see how it can cause any harm to the league at all. The demand is there for both seats and screens.
@ShyamMehta-j6b4 күн бұрын
I somewhat disagree with Gary and Alan on the 3pm Kick offs. You both were speaking from a very privileged background. The fact that you get to attend games for work purposes. I personally think the ultra fans and season ticket holders will still attend. As a Spurs fan the first season at the new stadium I found it extremely difficult to get tickets for any game. With more televised 3pm games I believe it will give a chance for other fans to see a live game as a one off, maybe be able to take their partner or children. That sadly has been eradicated from this league because of all commercial aspects. You have to remember that there is only 3 stadiums active in the premier league that can capacitate over 60k supporters/fans. P.S Gary if you want to take me as a plus one to a game that would be awesome. It's been over 4 years since I've seen a live premier league game. Seen England during that time but the atmosphere is just not the same. Massive fan of the podcast been listening since the very start. It keeps me going whilst working from home. I'm with Gary on the referee question. I come from a rugby background and cannot understand why miking up the referee and having body cam wouldn't work. That way everyone in the ground knows what's happening and hopefully would get rid of some of the vitriol I've heard when I was a steward at a First Division and then founder member of the Premier League club back in the day. I did four seasons and honestly I'd never heard the amount of abuse at rugby games even when I was playing.

The 3pm block out then is creating a false market? Overpricing the tickets making it harder for the normal person to afford a ticket? Also means those who wouldn't be able to afford a ticket anyway miss out for no reason? Also every time a tourist comes, they take the opportunity away for a local to attend? While they themselves probably can VPN watch the game anyway from their own country? But going back to the price inflation, it just means greed? If it's not that then wouldn't the tickets stay as competitive anyway? BTW I'm not from England so I can watch all the matches for $10 aud a month legally as well.... yea it's at shit times for me locally is the only draw back. If your gonna answer some questions like this playing devils advocate both ways would be good.

Only certain teams benefit from tourism. But I agree because there will never be less than 52000 in St James no matter of Time, TV or weather. 100000 people wanting tickets in this city it’s like gold dust getting one

I think the argument that refs can't be micked up because of the risk of bad language is nothing more than an excuse. Rugby players swear as much if not more than football players and they know to control their language. If it was a problem I'm sure fines from the clubs would stop them pretty quick. With the cost of going to a match I'm sure quite a few fans would compare a TV subscription and in hard times opt to watch a game on TV. If they did want to try and get the crowds in they could always have a TV blackout within a specific radius of the stadium, say 100 miles if a specific crowd percentage were not present at the ground. People sometimes forget that while games are shown live in other parts of the world there are time differences to be taken into account. For example a 3pm kick off in the UK is a 2 am kick off in NZ with a finish at 4 am over there.

I promise to view the prem table I know it's the tightest (closest) it's ever been but Notts Forest great for football I was silently hoping they'd make it another season last time round(do you agree with a term being a season) this term rough & tough boss. By the way I did drink in Linekers bar Playa del inglés gran canaria 1k998 TaDa AB-ON1 ♦️

Micah is correct regarding the FA Cup/relegation question. Has Gary forgotten Wigan Athletic?

3pm blackouts are ludicrous in this day and age. It's honestly an archaic regulation, that needs to be wiped clean. I disagree with Gary's stance on stadiums potentially not being full. Stadiums are full because fans want to go see their team play live, and experience that with their mates and family. It will never compare to watching the game in a pub or at home. What will stop people from going, however, will be rising ticket prices.

I said it as soon as Tuchel was appointed (and commented as such on one of these pods) ... he'll not care about player egos, he'll pick the team/squad he feels is needed for the relevant fixtures. Agree absolutely re. getting the ref mic'd up and hearing the discussion at key moments. It works perfectly well in rugby (both codes) and leads to more respect for the refs ... something football players should take heed of. (There's an old cliche ... rugby is a game for thugs played by gentlemen, and football is a game for gentlemen played by thugs)

Think the 3pm blackout opinion is a bit out of touch. As Gary said, the stadiums are always sold out, with people being left out. If it was played on TV the stadiums would still sell out regardless. By they obviously have more insight than us so who knows.

Real fans can't get tickets anymore, it's all corporate. So 3pm ko on tv won't make a difference. Plus if real fans could get tickets, they'd prefer to go than watch on tv.

Its about the lower clubs not the premier league clubs and their attendances
