The intro scene with Mr. Poopybutthole? Trying to make us believe he has been there the whole time, then it's the episode that introduces Mr. Poopybutthole and the threat is trying to make them believe it has been there the whole time. Mr. Poopybutthole is a memory invader that is just trying to live out his life, and doesn't really want to take over like the rest of them do, he found his "happy place" in the family by getting shot by Beth.

I always felt the opening scene with giant morty erupting from a sea to a “sacrifice” was a reference to the movie Clash of the Titans, it mirrors the Kraken scene pretty nicely. The spider heads is a reference to The Thing. When anything is infected with The Thing, is exposed to fire, the parasite will react violently with fear as it’s the only weakness that was discovered.
