great car with the typical Jaguar interior which is never ever going to be outdated because it's classic, timeless, elegant and super functional. The suspension is really remarkably comfy, almost posh. As an XJ/Daimler owner the suspension of the X-Type gets as close as it gets to its bigger siblings. The car sits well on the street and the steering provides a lot control. The 2.2 diesel engine is a torque monster that makes overtaking an easy thing - but - it's not a racer engine. It lacks punch at higher speeds and higher RPMs. But that's a none issue for a daily driver. The engine sound is very, very rough and makes quite an ugly kaputt tractor noise (even for a diesel, especially when cold at idle). After the engine has warmed up the noise gets better but still noisier than Diesel engines of the same era from France, Italy and Germany. Weaknesses are turbo and EGR (as it is with many other common rail diesel engines). So in case the spiral sign lights up in your dash together with a message "transmission failure", then replace turbo and egr (or get them refurbished) - don't bother to search for anything else. This is a car that must be driven a lot and ideally on longer distances. Then it will last for hundreds of thousands of km. I own X-Types since 10 years and the car(s) have proven to be very reliable with a generally low cost of maintenance. Some parts can be taken from the Mondeo. But! It's really not a Mondeo. It's a genuine Jaguar. When comfort, roominess, good style, reliability and low maintenance are the key criteria, then overall the X-Type is one of the best Jags ever built. Rust is generally a non-issue except maybe at the rear hatch around the chrome bar. I let both bodies seal with wax from the inside so I trust they will be good for many years to come.

P.S. I have both X-Types. One with sport suspension and one with normal suspension. I definitely prefer the normal, much more comfortable suspension. When comparing the handling of both X-Types, I feel the normal suspension is not only more comfortable but also provides better control and more driver confidence. It works better for me, especially on bumpy roads (of which there are many in Europe).

Had one for 9 years - well beyond the point that I would normally change my car for something newer, because they are so fantastic. Built quality better than my current E350d. (The dealer refused to give me a px price). Remapped to 190bhp and they will have more than adequate power, and I once got 70mpg on a run. My original clutch was still strong at 193,000. Shame that you didn't get one with all the toys - I had a Sovereign. Lovely beige leather and real walnut. Negatives are cills rust, electronics are flakey, and EGRs don't last very long unless blanked off. But I still remember the first time that I saw the estate. I was gob smacked as they were just so pretty for the era (and I was driving a brand new Alfa at the time). Mondeo chasis is good. Transit 2.2d engine is even better ☺️

Quite a light but comprehensive review of this 15 yr old model of the 20% by parts out of the Mondeo bin and let’s not forget how good a vehicle the Mondeo was and still is! You’ve mostly done your homework,but to point out that the 2008 facelift 2.2d has an Aisin Warner auto box that is super slick and very reliable! I have a year 2010 that has done 139,000 miles, super smooth, comfortable and turning in 43-47 mpg! I have however fitted a Flashlube Catchcan Pro to save the-nightmare egr-dpf failure probs with this particular model! The panic inclusion to meet euro 4 regs meant an inferior egr valve was fitted to the Ford Puma engine, which gets oiled up from crankcase fumes, that in turn from over fuelling, poisons the D P F...£2k plus to resolve...or if it’s not melted..£125+ refurb by the brilliant DPF Clean Team! WORKS!!! All this just FYI and to reinforce that these are great cars! Even Clarkson said so! Cheers all, stay safe too!

The weird poppy out headlight washers are called cruciforms :D - They were used on the X-type, S-Type, and X308's (XJs), and yes, they fall off all the time. Most owners just disable the washers and blank them off. I think the major issue was the part weakening when used at higher speeds. As you rightly say, the 2.2 manual diesel is definitely the one to go for. Albeit, the 2.0D isn't bad at all. Depending on your speeds, you'll quickly get it up to 5th and be happy plodding along at legal speeds averaging around 40-45MPG (I can confirm the gear ratio is completely different to the petrol versions). In terms of the petrol models, although some may disagree, I think the 3.0L is the one to go for. The smaller engines do not reward you with any notable extra fuel efficiency (the 2.0 petrol is only around 5-6 MPG better than the 3.0) and every other petrol engine aside from the 3.0L had a potential head gasket problem lurking (particularly the 2.5). The only major faults you didn't note in the diesels were the DPF, EGR valve/hose, and turbo (failed actuator or clogged vanes). Albeit, these were problems for most retro-fitted cars during the beginning of the diesel emissions drive in the mid-2000s. - Oh, and that the X-type has a hatefully crammed engine bay meaning you have to have the hands of a child to change the light bulbs without swearing like a sailor and a lot of the common failure parts (alternator, aux tensioner) are amazingly difficult to access without lifting the engine out. A factor that wasn't helped by the fact that the standard headlight bulbs are akin to a candle in the abyss. Good video!

This car actually grabs some attention in Portugal. I've got new shocks and lowering springs but i wish the steering was more direct because the car does handle very well considering it's weight and FWD. And the brakes... Idk if its my car but they are so spongy, i drive like a grandpa because of the car. Oh and it's the 5 speed diesel and gearing is similar to the six speed but lacks the last gear, unfortunately. It's my first car and will keep for some more years, 4 years already in :) Great video and i wish you great motoring miles!

Tedious, ill informed clichés about the X Type being a Mondeo; it isn't. the chassis is heavily modified and only a maximum of about 30% is shared with the Mondeo, most variants are less than that. The 2.2d is not the van engine, the 2.0d is the Transit/Mondeo engine. I have a mint condition 2.0d SE and its much better mated to a manual gearbox than an auto. It has its design foibles for sure but overall most X Types are reliable if chosen judiciously, such a post 2004 model and from somebody who has maintained it appropriately. My brother's cosseted 5.0 XKR is far more troublesome than my humble X Type. It does have some irritating design flaws such as the crap door handles. I'm afraid you are talking through your well intentioned arse about the 2.0d being tiring, it's not quick off the mark but it's got decent midrange torque and is relaxed on the motorway, 70mph is at 2,000 revs, so I don't get the inference that it struggles. The 2.0d engine is a sodding pain to work on but it's not inherently unreliable.
@BuckleUpShow
@BuckleUpShow Жыл бұрын
The X-Type doesn't have a chassis, it has a monocoque which shares its architecture with the mondeo. Yes it is heavily reworked, its actually has different overall dimensions, and Jag got to fully redo the suspension, but it still shares a ford platform. Importantly, this is not a bad thing. The 2.2 is a van engine, but it actually debuted in the X-Type and Mondeo ST220 before it made it into a transit. "In 2004, Ford introduced the Duratorq ZSD-422, a 2.2 L (2,198 cc) turbodiesel for top-of-the-range versions of the Mondeo and Jaguar X-Type which produced 155 PS (114 kW; 153 hp). This is unrelated to the PSA DW12 2.2 unit used in Peugeot and Citroën applications. Applications: Ford Transit 2004-2007 Ford Mondeo 2.2 TDCi 155, 155 PS (114 kW; 153 hp) and 355 N⋅m (262 lb⋅ft) 2004-2009 Jaguar X-Type 2011-2016 Land Rover Defender 2011-2021 Ford Ranger T6 & Mazda BT-50 2.2 TDCi / MZ-CD 2.2 110 kW (150 PS; 148 hp) & 375 N⋅m (277 lb⋅ft) 2012- 2016 Ford Transit Custom 2015-2021 Ford Everest 2.2 TDCi 2007-2016 Peugeot Boxer/Citroën Relay" Pretty much any car can be reliable if "chosen judiciously" (good condition, good service history and known preventative maintenance done), this is the definition of a non point. Similarly I think your brother is unlucky, as high performance V8s go the supercharged 5.0 AJV8 is pretty easy to live with, perhaps it needs driving more and cosseting less. My points on the 2.0 were based of forum comments from multiple accounts, rather than on first hand experience, I'm thrilled to hear you don't share their complaints. I don't think I called it unreliable at any point though, or not any less reliable than the 2.2? Both the diesels are susceptible to turbo issues and EGR problems, a combination of a fairly rudematary emmisons system and most x-type first owners being rather sedate drivers due to their advanced age. Theoretically a high mileage petrol has less to go wrong, but they need timing belts to be serviced and they tend to be quite thirsty so I would still say the 2.2 is the pick of the range for most people.
@thomasgray5406
@thomasgray5406 Жыл бұрын
@Buckle Up Yes, apologies, I should say platform not chassis. Lots of valid points there, although I'd still argue the 2.2 shouldn't be referred to as a van engine. I avoided the 2.2d because of its extra complexity and dpf. Somehow, DVLA have been charging me just £180 p.a.road tax which seems bizarre but I'm not complaining. I would take slight issue about all cars being generally reliable if picked judiciously, there are many that aren't such as a TVR or several FIAT models (hence continuing the fix it again tomorrow.). When I said judiciously, I was including variant in this, the higher performance X Types definitely do have plenty of issues. They certainly all have weaknesses, some of which include crap door handles with sticking doors (a Jag speciality), weak boot mechanism, weak fuel flap linkage, eating front coils/mounts, vulnerable power steering unit, stupid ignition key stages, poor 'cigarette lighter' socket which eats fuses, sill problems (although mine are fine), fiddly controls when simple ones would be better, lack of folding rear seats in some and poor standard headlights. I don't see how the 2.0d can be extolled in the Mondeo and Transit yet slated in the Jag, there are some superficial differences and accessibility in the engine bay is very poor for some things.
@BuckleUpShow
@BuckleUpShow Жыл бұрын
The DPF only came fitted after 2007, as did limp home mode. A 2004 - 2006 2.2d avoids those inconveniences. I've never heard anyone extolling the 2.0 in the Mondeo or the Transit, the only Puma unit I've seen affection for is the 2.4 fitted in some defenders as it's seen as more robust than the later 2.2 engine.

Not really fair or sensible to keep accusing it of being a Mondeo. It's not. It shares the Mondeo's extremely good chassis platform which is why you noted it has good handling and feel. All manufacturers share platforms across their ranges. For example my Audi RS5 shares its chassis with a VW Passat, Skoda Superb, Audi A4. The X-Type platform is also used in the Range Rover Evoke and the Freelander. Even Seat use the Ford Fiesta platform. Why not share a good thing? Also only 17% or parts from a Mondeo are used in an X-Type including the chassis bits, brakes, wipers, handbrake... Although I have had several other cars over the last 20 years, I have kept my 2001 X-Type 3.0 Sport AWD manual, because it is such a nice car. Mine is fully loaded with the big satnav screen, TV (no good now analogue is dead) premium sound and voice control. That's also what the button on the steering wheel is for. You can control all of the car's functions by voice if you have that option. "climate control 22 degrees" or "demist on", "changer play disc five track two" phone someone or select a sat nav location or whatever. VERY cool function in 2001 when I bought mine. Plus the manual could do 0-60 in 6.5 which was quick for 2001. So ahead of its time. And yet timeless.

David, I bought the car, so clearly I'm a fan. You have to Adress the mondeo thing its just so notorious at this point, but to be fair I would probably also mention the platform sharing if I was doing a VAG car it's just no one seems to blink at that. Which is odd when, in my opinion, the mondeo is a better starting point than the Passat. And again you're very right about the lack of direct parts sharing with the mondeo, I can't think of another platform share that was adjusted so drastically to produce the same class of vehicle. Its worth noting that those parts are still ford with Jaguar R&D behind them though, just like the lovely AJ V6 is based on a zetec motor but with more advanced and efficient top end work. I want to stress I do not think any of these things are a bad thing. If I stumble across a manual V6 at some point (especially an estate) I will probably buy it. Alas this one has been moved on as my car gets the duties of being the camera car for all the other reviews so I've traded into something a bit newer. Hope you get lots more enjoyment out of your X-Type for years to come 😊

@@BuckleUpShow The 3 Litre is rather thirsty but it was bought in a time when that didn't matter :-) The engine is Duratec originally designed by Porsche but never used by them and sold to Ford. Mazda then worked their magic on it with variable valve timing, then Ford, Cosworth and finally Jaguar did the tuned intake system to squeeze out the last few hps. Quite an interesting journey really.

But seriously, yes you're right that is true, it's hard to know why the X-type Mondeo thing started but the fact is it's here now and It needed to be mentioned. I suspect perhaps it could be to do with the fact it completely broke the mould of how a Jaguar had been up until that point. I also suspect it lingers because X-type owners get so irritated by it being brought up which as an owner I find rather odd. Why is it a bad thing to have a car built off one of the best platforms Ford had at that time.

I binned the parcel shelf immediately after I bought my xtype. It's so heavy! I just had my xtype 2.2 diesel estate remapped. Taking it from 155 to 185 bhp. Ha probably more like 120 to 150 bhp considering its done 126k. But it's a nice difference. Would recommend a remap. I used to get around 36 mpg from it before the remap. I'm hoping to get more mpg now but I seem to be driving it harder after the remap so it'll be hard to gauge.

It's NOT a Mondeo. It shares a modified platform, and some Ford electrics and brake components, but the modelling, engine, interior is all Jaguar. The platform is actually smaller than the Mk2 Mondeo because otherwise it would have been more spacious than an S-Type. The result, when combined with a very un-Mondeo viscous coupling all-wheel drive, is a car that handles superbly, has adequate space for a family with 2 children under 12, and has aged very well, looking like a lowered XJS, but without the bulk. It's a car that is often criticised by people who have never owned one, but when you look at the number of cars out there, now over 20 years old still delivering performance, handling and comfort, the X-Type would appear to be having the last laugh.
@BuckleUpShow
@BuckleUpShow 2 жыл бұрын
All of these changes were made because ultimately Jaguar was doing something they didn't want to do. When Ford told them they wanted to make a compact executive what Jag did is went and bought a 3 series BMW, slot an AJ V8 into it and tweak the suspension to show the ford execs what they thought a small Jag should be like. Ford wasn't interested and forced them to use the Mondeo platform that was FWD and too big which is what led to the shrinking and the borrowing of the freelanders awd system. Yes parts of the petrol engines are different and that's really benifited them in longitudinal applications where they has pretty much they highest specific output for regular Production N/A V6s at the time but in the transverse form they didn't provide any more grunt than the mondeo ST-220 which shared the engine block and basics. The diesels are even less changed and they lose the rear biased AWD edging them ever closer to mondeo. Also, you're right about the handling being good but I wouldn't suggest it's any better than that of a mk2 Mondeo either. With all of this said, I agree with you. It's a great car, I love the way the estate looks. It's biggest downside from new, the dated interior, doesn't really matter any more because any 15 year old car will have a dated looking interior anyway and most importantly it does feel like the other big boy Jags from behind the wheel thanks to the tuning of the chassis, steering, refinent and handling. It also provides way more punch for the money than a beamer or Audi so that's why I bought one. I do just lean into the mondeo thing though, I think it's a weird criticism. The mondeo was the best car in class when it was new. Why would anyone say no to a luxury one?

the rear brakes and handbrake on these cars suck, they are a problem, calipers and cables seize, same with the Mondeo, binding brakes are an issue and new calipers are expensive, walk away if you look at one and the brakes do not feel right, noise from crank pulley is another common Jaguar/Mondeo issue, and is expensive to cure
@BuckleUpShow
@BuckleUpShow 3 жыл бұрын
The handbrake is was corrected in 2004 by different Bosch callipers, cars after then are much better about it. I have never ever had a problem with mine even if its sat for more than a week in adverse weather conditions. Something that wouldn't be true of any car with drum brakes. Jaguar did make a beefier crank pulley you can replace the old one with or you can change the alternator pully from a solid one to one with a clutch which can also solve the problem. As a preventative maintenance measure (one that will run you about £400 at a machanic) I'll take a it over VANOS or IMS bearings or any number of ingrained engine defects that require an engine-out from other luxury cars of this age

@BuckleUpShow
@BuckleUpShow Жыл бұрын
Where to begin, around 20 percent (not 12)of parts are a true share, but that's obfuscates the point. Even the parts that aren't directly shared are often modified and jaguar tweaked versions of Ford parts. At no point did I say this was a bad thing but honestly, get over yourself. No it's a wood veneer but by all accounts there is a thicker layer of lacquer than there is of wood so it may as well be plastic. "poverty spec" as you describe it (what a lovely classist take) was actually S, Sport and SE were considered more like choices depending on the buyer rather than a strict hierarchy of trim levels, sort of like if you wanted an ST-Line vs Titanium Ford. The X-Type did not save Jaguar, it didn't even achieve half it's sales estimation over is eight year life span and the outlay that Ford's PAG made to have a high volume manufacturing plant for it made the company deeply unprofitable, and trend that is still strong with Jaguar to this day. When Tata took over the X-Type had such a poor image they canned it immediately without a successor and didn't bother getting round to doing one until the XE came out in 2015 some 6 years later. Of course this poor image it received makes it a bargain buy today and often cheaper than the Ford Mondeo it shares 20% of its parts with, so as a used buy it's an excellent choice.
