I can totally relate I lived in Korea for a year. I was suppose to do my whole undergrad there, but after 1 year it felt like I was slowly dying. I became so bitter and felt like such an outcast that I had to leave. The stares and the sly comments got to me. I ended up getting a summer job and one of my students called me a Monkey and I literally went into the bathroom abd balled my eyes out. And he would always point to me and call me stinky. One day I gave him the "wtf face if you say one more thing I will drop kick you" and ever since then he left me alone. But man I just missed America and here I am back at home and I am sooo glad

I LOVE your vids. Ha Ha!! Why are you barely hanging onto the edge of that video frame?! But really, communicating the sense of isolation and alienation that comes with living in communities outside of what is typical for oneself is hugely important. SO, thanks for that. Even living in the UK, where black people abound in certain areas, I felt out of place sometimes and all I wanted was to go home. But, you're right, you move past that point and then you play it up. These are the experiences that, if you let them, will make you stronger and really understand who you are as an individual.

I've been to Korea for a month last year and I was shouting "YES! THATS SO TRUE" this whole video lol. One time my friend and I were trying to get back to Seoul from Everland and we were waiting on the last bus. It was hot, we were tired and we just wanted to leave. There were 2 korean boys and 1 girl in front of us who kept glancing back at us and whispering stuff and laughing. So we automatically assumed they were talking shit about us. Turned out, they were trying to figure out from what country we were (I'm from Holland, dutch isn't really a language they hear everyday lol) and they were trying to get the girl to talk English with us but she was being really shy about it lol. I remember feeling so bad because they were genuinely nice people and they even helped us get back to Seoul after that lol. Lesson learned! XD It's not always a bad thing when you get stared at! :P

I am much older now but I came Korea to study in my twenties and even though I am Korean and was quite confident about my looks then, I became insecure too! It's not only non-Koreans. I lived around Ewha University and there were so many pretty girls that I felt like an octopus(Korean expression for when standing next to a beautiful person). In America we're taught individualism is king and I was happy to go around in my torn jeans and smoking in public. After a few months of living in a conformist society, I found myself dressing up and wearing make-up a lot more and and I tried not to smoke in public because even though the Koreans I was with said it was fine I could tell they felt uncomfortable. I went on a date with once with a Yonsei student who said, "of course I could smoke because we were near campus and the students were progressive." I lit up and his face turned red. LOL. I felt sorry for him so I put my cigarette out. This was back in the nineties when female smokers were rare. For staring, I recommend just staring back and that usually makes the person look away. I'm a Korean-American ajumma now and I get stares sometimes too. I just stare back until they back down.

Whites talking about racism, how ironic, not offense. Maybe you should've researched more about the culture, no offense, but that's what anybody should expect, who's non Asian, but look at it this way, they don't seem blatant racists, sure, you know, comitting hate crimes they might have troubles with racism, but it also I think it is curiosity.

***** ?? blacks have serious issues with racism and are always in the news for committing crimes on whites, mexicans or asians. Look around your own back yard before you start criticizing mine. ''Being black in Korea/Sweden/Japan/Australia/etc'', "Do whites love black girls?", "Do asian women love black guys?", "black dis", "black dat". i think you should shut up about racism already. it's like the only thing you talk about besides sport and music. hell even music is full of "black dis black dat" nowadays.

I always have to wonder how I will act, when being told "Korean only" or "Japanese only" in some of those types of places. I'm fully aware, and actually quite understanding about the fact that ethnocentrism is bound to occur in societies where multiculturalism really isn't as much of a thing as it is in the west, but still, I hope that I take it in stride if/when it happens to me.

No problem as soon as its up and running you will hear from me :) As a part of my degree (international relations) we had to study abroad so I chose Senegal and needless to say it was a blast, I took classes and did some conservation work. One fun thing was the men didn't believe that I was from America (slavery disconnect) and because of my complexion they were sure I was from Cape Verde (read black and Portuguese) so so funny. Also that I should stay inside to preserve my color. *dies*

Just a thought on the Koreans Only club. I've heard a lot of stories of foreigners (mostly Americans) trashing clubs and starting fights. Is it possible that's why they didn't let you guys in? RIGHT! I know some friends think that I am pulling this stuff out of my ass, but i've known bouncers, vip hostesses, and door guys in the industry and they have all told me something similar. One friend told me that if a club starts looking to "Asian" and the owner doesn't like that, they will change the DJ or the type of music. Or just have them stand in line while other non Asians can enter. I heard the same thing about blacks.... change the dress code to keep them out.

OkayKell, big thumbs up an extra-ordinary vlog! One quick question: I'm in the states, and as we all know, in this culture, anyone who is mixed black is considered to be 'black.' Quite racist, obviously, but it affects my perception of the world for better or for worse. So, my question is, is Laura mixed race? My guess is that she is mixed black and white, based simply on appearance. As a result, I thought the 'white girl' you were referring to was not in the video at all! After watching straight through, it seems as if Laura is the 'white girl.' Sorry for quote marks, the terms white and black seems ridiculous. Are canadian racial definitions different? In other words, is a person considered white if they are partially 'white?'
