Was Naheed Nenshi accurate and fair in his criticism of Danielle Smith's government when he joined us on June 24? In this episode, we task two UCP supporters with "fact checking" the Alberta NDP leader's comments and providing alternative perspectives.
2:25 | Former UCP president Cynthia Moore and Alberta Institute's Peter McCaffrey respond to Naheed Nenshi's comments on infrastructure, schools, electricity rates, healthcare, carbon capture, and Premier Danielle Smith's time spent in her riding of Brooks-Medicine Hat.
WATCH OUR NENSHI INTERVIEW: rtrj.info/062424Nenshi
34:50 | Jespo and Johnny debrief, including a closer look at the state of EMS, cancer care, and surgery wait times in Alberta.
53:40 | Did you catch Charles Adler's comments on Winnipeg's Ten Commandments controversy? Ryan reveals the results of our unscientific, unofficial Twitter poll, and reads your comments (including an email from "Traveling Zebra").
TELL US WHAT YOU THINK: talk@ryanjespersen.com
1:04:50 | How do you feel about rodeo? Ahead of our July 12 Real Talk Round Table, Jespo and Johnny discuss changing attitudes around that sport, zoos, and circuses.

Also, it was an Alberta PC cabinet minister, under premier Ralph Klein, who made a bill which made it so that any new power transmission lines that would be built in Alberta, would be used for exporting the power to American states, and the power consumers in Alberta would be paying for these newly built power transmission lines.

These guests were way off the mark. In 2010, CPC Environment Minister, Jim Prentice, said that coal fired power plants must be decommissioned in Canada, by the earlier part of this decade, because they are a major contribution to GHG emissions, and reduced air quality. Jim Prentice was the last Alberta PC premier, and he wanted coal fired power plants decommissioned in Alberta for the same reasons, and he wanted more wind power and more solar power for Alberta. In the 2015 provincial election in Alberta, all the political parties in Alberta were campaigning on closing down coal fired power plants in Alberta, and they all wanted to get into more green energy sources. Ralph Klein's deregulation of electricity is the first reason why Albertans have very high power prices. He made the unsubstantiated claim that power prices would immediately go down, after electricity deregulation in Alberta happened. Instead, power prices in Alberta went up greatly. A former power engineer, who also dealt with the market side of power in Alberta, has said that electricity deregulation in Alberta has cost Albertans $32 billion, since 2001. He said this in 2015. Ralph Klein's Power Purchase Agreements mistake, also cost Albertans $10 billion. In 2010-11, TransAlta was manipulating power prices in Alberta, and in 2015, they were given a $56 million fine, which they have only passed onto the power consumers in Alberta. TransAlta was also involved with economic witholding, before the NDP were in power in Alberta, and the NDP stopped that. In 2019, the UCP resorted back to an energy only system for power, and stopped the NDP's pursuit of a capacity based power system, which led to these power blackouts in Alberta, this past winter and spring. The UCP also removed the NDP's cap on power prices in Alberta, which increased power prices in Alberta even more. The UCP blew billions of dollars on various voter bribery schemes, including making it look like they were reducing power prices for Albertans, but this was merely a loan to power companies in Alberta, which power consumers must now pay back on their power bills. In June of 2020, the UCP allowed economic witholding to come back, and they allowed power companies in Alberta to hold back the power, which made Albertans pay the highest power prices in Canada. This is what happened.

I moved to Alberta in 2017, signed up with EPCOR for 5.99 cents per kilowatt, way cheaper than the rates I was paying in Ontario. Have been paying the same rate for the last 7 years. When it comes to wasting and losing exponential amounts of money on the most costliest debacles repeatedly, the Alberta PCs were good at that, ever since Peter Lougheed was no longer premier of Alberta. This is what the UCP did, before Danielle Smith was premier of Alberta. It's the same type of wasteful spending that the Alberta PCs did, for decades. Blew money on plane flights to various places, which had no practical purpose, and gave no tangible results. Blew money on pricey hotel stays. Blew money on one sided panels and committees, which are stacked with their Conservative friends. Blew money on lawsuits, which the UCP knows they can't win. Blew $120 million on a useless 'War Room', blew nearly $200,000 on an unsuccessful UCP candidate to run the 'War Room', and blew large sums of money, daily on the 'War Room'. Blew a total of $16 billion on 2 very imbalanced 'aid packages' for Alberta. Lost in between $8 billion to $10 billion, from 2 rounds of corporate tax cuts, which didn't produce a single new hire. Blew well over $7 billion on a pipeline bet gone bad. Lost $4 billion on a pension fund debacle. Lost nearly $2 billion from the Heritage Savings Trust Fund, and lost even more money from that fund. Lost $1.6 billion on an 'accounting error'. Borrowd $25 billion, without asking Albertans about it, and the UCP have never revealed what they have used the money for. Hired 20, or more of their Conservative friends, for pointless positions, which pay in between $100,000 per year to $250,000 per year. Blew billions of dollars trying to prop up the Alberta PCs $35 billion bitumen upgrader debacle. Blew well over $200,000 on a billboard ad in New York City. Blew money on film ads, which were aimed at children. Couldn't account for how around $650 million in covid aid money was used. Allowed power companies in Alberta to hold back the power, which increased power prices in Alberta exponentially, which is known as economic witholding, and has cost Albertans well over $100 billion, since June of 2020. Lost $4 billion, without any paper trail. Has an Australian coal mining company suing the UCP for nearly $4 billion, for breaking a contract agreement. The UCP aren't a Conservative government at all.

This is what Danielle Smith did as premier of Alberta. Disrespected democracy, and made numerous bills, which also do just that, including Bill 8, Bill 10, Bill 11, Bill 18, Bill 20, Bill 21, and others. Put Albertans lives at risk, with the UCP's negligence, including with the daycares in Alberta. Blew billions of dollars on various voter bribery schemes, including making Albertans pay $1.2 billion for the new hockey arena for Calgary, which Danielle Smith originally opposed, when she was the Wildrose party leader, and as a radio talk show host, because she said it didn't make any economic sense, blew around $1.5 billion on the gas tax holiday vote buying scheme, and so on. Blew around $80 million on Turkish Tylenol. Is blowing $20 billion on the R-Star debacle. Blew around $100 million on the DynaLife debacle, which the UCP caused. Blew money on propaganda ads of various types. Blew $253,000 and $2 million on Preston Manning to produce a covid report that is junk. Hired many more staff for the UCP MLAs, at a great cost to Albertans, including Danielle Smith's staff of 34. Created the largest provincial cabinet in Alberta's history, with 34 cabinet ministers and associate ministers. Blew money on a pointless excursion to Dubai. Hired more Conservative crony friends of the UCP to help restructure AHS, in a circle game move, which will solve nothing. Is blowing money on carbon sequestration, which Danielle Smith originally opposed, because she said it was very costly and unproven technology. Has more coal mining companies suing the UCP for $10.8 billion, for breaking contract agreements. Is blowing money on an office in Ottawa, which will have no practical purpose. Is blowing $2 million and added costs on someone to produce another pandemic management report for Alberta. Is blowing money on a study to see how feasible a high speed rail for Alberta would be. Is planning to use the Heritage Savings Trust Fund money for bad business ideas, which would not survive on their own. The UCP has treated the vulnerable, seniors, medical professionals, teachers, students, rural property owners, the environment, and democracy in Alberta with disdain. Danielle Smith angers constituents, contradicts herself, tells so many lies, flip flops, backtracks and does many very costly debacles. It's no wonder why former Conservative politicians in Alberta don't trust Danielle Smith and the UCP. The only good and sensible Conservative premier in Alberta was Peter Lougheed. Naheed Nenshi got around 86% of the vote in the NDP leadership race, on the first try. The UCP are on their second leader, and this happened in under 4 years. Nobody (on the left or right) seems to take a critical stance on the main issue - immigration and rapid population increase. And the reason we want 10 million in Alberta is for "clout"? All provinces are dealing with massive healthcare issues. When your federal government is flooding the country with low-paid, low-skilled workers, students, and temporary foreign workers, then a healthcare system funded by a robust tax base becomes unsustainable. It's not rocket science. Alberta isn't an outlier here. Friends in other provinces complain about the exact same issues: wait times, lack of family doctors, lack of quality care and attention, etc.

Our freedom is based on the Ten Commandments. Since Bible reading was banned from schools our society has been on a downward slide toward selfishness etc.

Premier Smith is doing a good job. Don’t need Nenshi to increase taxes again and rolling over when Trudeau infringes on Alberta again and again.

Danielle Smith and the UCP aren't doing a good job, unless you count the UCP carrying on with the fiscal ineptitude and poor planning that the Alberta PCs did, ever since Don Getty was premier of Alberta being a good thing. It isn't good.

@beasport505 Peter Lougheed, who was the only good and sensible Conservative premier in Alberta, created something called Hansard. It documents what is brought up in the Alberta Legislature. Whether it's in the Alberta Legislature, on her costly propaganda media outlet, on her own phone in radio talk show, or in other places, such as in interviews, Danielle Smith contradicts herself and lies. Danielle Smith angers constituents, contradicts herself, tells so many lies, flip flops, backtracks and does very costly debacles. The UCP have only carried on with the fiscal ineptitude and poor planning that the Alberta PCs did, ever since Don Getty was premier of Alberta. That's not a good thing. Former Conservative politicians in Alberta have said that they don't trust Danielle Smith and the UCP, because they are so dishonest. They are correct. Peter Lougheed also didn't trust Danielle Smith. He was correct. The UCP aren't a Conservative government at all.

Good show, glad you have shows with both different perspectives. Regardless of what ever side or stipe someone follows, the most important virtue IS to listen to the other side. You don’t have to agree with a different perspective…… it might validate your belief as well!! BUT you must listen with an open mind!!!!!!
