In Florida we tell the transplants who moved there for the friendly people and great weather..... Please don't come down here and act the way you did up there. I'm new to the Raleigh area and use the manners that my mother taught me. I must say, it is NICE to hear people reply sir /ma'am, hold doors and greet each other with a friendly smile.

Working full time and part time grad school (MSF/MBA) I have been thinking about relocating after done with grad school and Raleigh is one of the places I’m considering. Fun video! We are empty nesters and relocating to Raleigh from Greensboro and are going kicking and screaming. Raleigh is a super fun place to visit, but the real estate prices are insane right now. Hate to give up a lovely home here for half the home there. Raleigh is a fantastic place for younger people who like a faster pace. Might I suggest Greensboro for more established families who still enjoy amenities without frenzy?

Coming from New York I luv the fact that honking your horn is considered rude down here. I only had to do it once when I thought someone was going to pull out (from a complex) in front of me. A small but significant cultural difference that is quite refreshing. The flip side is they do a LOT of tail-gating down here. I find that odd because the local speeds are typically higher here. It is a shame that the price of houses are going up fast in the triangle area, most likely fueled by out of state buyers that sold their more expensive houses for large amounts. They are able to put more money down and possibly even buy the house for cash. It remains to be seen if these out of state buyers will dilute the respectful culture down here. It is nice to wave to people and to have them wave back. In New York they would consider you being up to something. What a pleasant difference!
@LivinginRaleighTV
@LivinginRaleighTV 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments! Yes, it's very nice here. Beyond all the people coming in, housing is going up because we don't have enough people putting their homes for sale, which causes a shortage, which causes people to bid prices up and up and up. Hopefully, it will settle down soon. It's been very stressful for us and especially for our clients.

I think what needs to be emphasized on sites like these is the extremely long wait to see medical specialists and diagnostic tests. I purposefully moved relatively close to Duke and UNC for medical care, but was shocked with the 4 month wait to see specialists. In LA, to see a specialist at UCLA is about 3 weeks.
@Roma_eterna

@@Roma_eterna I depends where you are coming from. I am very disappointed with the health care here. With all due respect, there seems to be a " what ever' attitude with professionals in general. That includes health professionals and service professionals like electricians, plumbers, veterinarians,. I lived in NJ and LA and Boston and never experienced an attitude like here before. Frankly I am sorry I moved here. Dont believe all the hype on sites that say its one of the 10 best places to live in the US. And its expensive as well.

@@richmonroe203 that helps a lot actually! I’m moving down from Boston, and I’m used to the amenities I mentioned. The problem is super high cost of living and it’s cold. I know Maryland and Virginia get colder temperatures too, but at least they don’t linger into April and May.

I’ve lived in NC all my life- grew up in Winston-Salem and moved to Wilmington area about 15yrs ago. I’ve worked on / off in Raleigh-Durham as well as have friends that live there. Raleigh isn’t Southern (IMO) - huge influx of Midwesterners starting in 1980’s a lot like Atlanta. Traffic is horrendous. Downtown is nice and I really like Cameron Village near NC State and the Farmers Market. I’m a Carolina Hurricanes fan and the arena along with Walnut Creek get a lot of concerts. Umstead Park is really cool too and there are several nice lakes nearby (Jordan, Kerr, and Hyco). It’s an easy 2-3hr drive to the beach. Mountains are about 3-4hrs drive. Many areas of Raleigh / Durham are very pricey - downtowns, near Duke / NC State / RTP as well as Cary and North Hills areas. RDU does have good airline service (Southwest, AA, Delta) but CLT has far more nonstop options with the AA Hub. There are a lot of good paying jobs. I’m very happy living in Southport area between Wilmington & Myrtle Beach - this area has become very popular with people from Northeast and real estate has become quite pricey in last 2yrs (almost doubling).

Don't move here if you think it's affordable, it's not. The low income housing is all being knocked down and all the trees and the beauty of the place to put high rise after high rise of "luxury apartments". The things that made Raleigh beautiful and wonderful are being systematically removed. It's so sad. It is similar to what happened to Seattle years ago and has recently happened to Austin. People hear this is a good place to live, then they all move here and now it's not that good any more. But there are other towns out there that are nice and still have their charm and so far not that many people know about them. But it's over for Austin, Boise and Raleigh.

@LivinginRaleighTV
@LivinginRaleighTV 3 жыл бұрын
We talked about that in our previous video linked at the end of this one. Hurricanes are not usually a major threat because we are far enough inland that they die down before they get here. There are some areas that are more likely to get flooded (Crabtree area) but flooding is rarely an issue for most people. You can find flood zone maps online if it’s a concern. Tornados do happen but not as frequently as some other states.

Only time I honk is when its been like 4 seconds after its green. Not waiting another 5 minutes for the light cycle to go through because you were on the iphone!! Also, at a stop sign, if you get there before me. Do NOT wave me on. Just effing go man! It's not hard. I've seen so many cases of both drivers waving each other on for minutes. Holding up traffic etc.

some people like to idle at stop signs (especially in neighborhoods) and use their phone etc. I know its bad but you shouldn't rely on others. If they wave you off, just go first, if they even hesitate more than 2 seconds, also just go first. Don't worry about others mate

Great video btw!! I’m originally from the city of Chicago and lived in NYC. I just moved here to NC in February 2021 through my job. I just want to say that it’s a big misconception on both southern and northern regions. Not all southerners are polite and display southern hospitality I’ve met kinder southerners in Texas than NC. And not all Northerners want to change the south and not all Northerners have bad attitudes a lot of us came looking for the southern charm, quiet life, safe easier living. Only thing I brag about is Chicago bbq is better than any other state hands down lol (let me be biased 😂) You can pretty much tell who is from where with the driving southerners like to tail gait (annoying) and northerners (New Yorkers) beep the horn as soon as the light turns green and will cut you off that’s annoying as well. I agree don’t bring the negatives where you came from but also don’t push the negative aspects of the south on others as well.

People sleeping on the stairs of my apartment building, cars getting broke into, addicts, etc. Will I have to deal with these things out there too? Every city has good and bad sections. A good realtor should be able to show you around and give you a heads up on your concerns. Go to the North Carolina website and the Raleigh website. @@anthonyricci2277 I lived in Raleigh from 1990/1993- 2004. I loved living in Raleigh in those days and got to see alot of changes happening during my day. I've driven through Raleigh since then and it's changed so much I can't really give you a totally fair assessment form 2004- now, but I can tell you that Raleigh was a great place to live back when I was in my 20s through the 90s. I can only imagine that it's gotten better since then in a lot of ways. It's gotten much more metropolitan and high-end. Unfortunately that does come with higher prices, but I'm hearing it's still better than bigger cities. I always felt if I was ever going to move to NC from any other state, I'd definitely choose Raleigh or Chapel Hill over anywhere else. If Durham is anything like it was back in my day, stay away! Raleigh is more exciting and full of things to do, while Chapel Hill is almost a word of it's own. Raleigh vibe (what I understand) is fun, exciting, lots of places to go and things to do, full of friendly faces.......and like the realtor said, has a growing homeless population ( that just wasn't the case in the 90s but I think it has been notable starting about 17 yrs ago and apparently has grown every yr since. I'm sure it's better than most states, but it's homelessness and the USA, it's going to happen. I live in Chapel Hill now and love it too. The vibe here is similar to Raleigh but a little more laid back. While Raleigh is a melting pot of different vibes, Chapel Hill people are all pretty much on the same page or vibe. You can't go wrong with either Raleigh or Chapel Hill. You will pay more for the lifestyle at both though but still affordable.

Thank you!! This is the truth. The Raleigh that WAS the great place to move does not exist anymore. It's just another expensive (becoming overcrowded) southern city like Austin. I can't believe how many beautiful forests and farms I've seen clear cut over the last ten years. It's so depressing and really erases so much charm Raleigh had. People need to understand that once you hear that a place is great it's already on it's way out. You're right, you can't stop progress but you don't have to stick around to watch beauty ruined. ***Cup a Joe is hanging on by a thread...surrounded by tall buildings..the cool walkability of Hillsborough next to NC state is gone...

I grew in NY, been living in LA for 7 years, and I was hoping to move somewhere without so much rampant homelessness. But New York was LEAGUES better than LA; here in LA it often feels like a different country with the lack of infrastructure to deal with homelessness. Is everywhere this bad now, or are there some communities back east more equipped to deal with this?
