Nicole, you may want to check in to growing salpiglossis, also known as painted tongue. I am in upstate NY and am growing the grandiflora mix for the first time. They are gorgeous! I just read they make good cut flowers and thought of you. They also said once it starts cooling down a bit (us right now!) they start putting on a flush of new flowers. I started mine indoors this year. They will be on my list of things to grow every year.

Those buttery creamy yellow statice are to die for. I can just envision an entire bouquet of those on my dinner table. And dancing cosmos!! Backbreaking work for sure. Just curious.... how many days a week do you harvest? How many average hours per week spent in harvesting? Will the rudbeckia, sunflowers, snapdragons, statice, etc. come back next year or will you be replanting those again? What percent of your flower business is annuals versus perennials? You can answer these whenever..... in the middle of winter or whenever you have some free time.

Hi, I have a question. I can see the weed barrier along the rows of flowers. How much of your flowers are transplants compared to direct sowed. And which varieties do you only transplant?
@CottageGardensonForest3 жыл бұрын
Do you park your cart in the shed while cutting your flowers? I don’t have shade to park mine in so I’ve got to come up with an umbrella for my cart. How does your back hold up being bent over for hours on end? I have RA and herniated discs is why I ask if the hours of cutting can be difficult. I don’t grow on that scale but would consider it if it’s physically doable. Thanks for the calming video.

Hey Tawana, Gardeners Supply has a couple of wheeled carts that you can sit on as you work. It's what I have to do as right now I'm also walking with a cane and can't stand for long periods. You should look them up.

seems a shame to throw away the non sellable flowers. why not just gather them all together in bunches and sell or give them away as 'cast away flowers' ?
@FlowerHillFarm3 жыл бұрын
I don't have the time to do that. I can barely keep up with everything I have going as it is. I will sell stems that are not perfect when I have bouquet bars and people can choose them. I was not having a bouquet bar this week. Deadheading the blooms encourages new ones, it's just part of the farming process. This is not backyard gardening and a lot of people find it difficult to wrap their head around that. You should see what the florist throws away-- hundreds and hundreds of stems every week.
