I found the link to the cbn stone and its in the description. I couldn’t find it again on amazon to post again for some reason, it just disappeared. I think that link still works though. If not a good alternative to the cbn stone is this one from DMT amzn.to/3Gdpeqn It comes in a 10" version too but is slightly more expensive. I would suggest the coarse/fine combo. I wonder how the grit ratings work on these stones? plates? I know on the DMT plates they leave equal depth scratches regardless of stated grit ratings meaning the 325 seems to leave the best edges of any, and also ironically remove the least material. This is why bonded stones are so preferred, they just produce finer and higher quality edges. Diamond powder is great though, I like it on wood. Gotta play around with water or oil or solvents to see what works best for a given strop substrate.

I still have to finish the video, but a couple of comments. I hand sharpened for years but only recently really learned how to do it correctly. Well, mostly. I've been using the Work Sharp Professional Precision Adjust for about a month but still feel like I am missing something. Knives are sharp but could be sharper I think. I can get sharper with the diamond DMT sharpener. I tried the Ken Onion sharpener also from Work Sharp but returned it, not confident that it was doing much better. Thinking of ordering the 3 UltraSharp stones in the set for grins. I've duly noted about achieving the burr but until now, I thought that it was needed for each stage of sharpening. Not so? Also, how important is it t maintain the same direction while sharpening? Thanks!
@OUTDOORS5510 ай бұрын
Sorry missed this! I'm not sure what you mean "same direction"?
@ImOnTheEdge10 ай бұрын
@@OUTDOORS55 No problem. The bottom line is that you should try to maintain the scratch pattern in the same direction and avoid crossing the scratch pattern, at least as I understand it now. In short, consistency with how you are sharpening seems to be more important than I first realized. You shouldn't sharpen from 4:00 to 10:00, then change to 7:00 to 1:00, if that makes sense.

6 micron diamond strop seems like a much better option for a general purpose knife than Chromium oxide. Overstropping can be an issue causing foil burr. I never tried plates. Aluminum oxide stones come in many formats. There are soft soaking stones exactly as you said but also some extra hard soaking stones that barely release abrasive and also Splash and go stones. I also dislike extra soft stones. Science of Sharp has two studies showing diamond plates factures vanadium carbides. Aluminum oxide stones make a clean cut on these carbides. It's possible broken carbides may work as fracture points and weaken the edge but I don't know any further studies on the topic with actual durability tests so it's hard to guess how much practical impact this has.
@Aerzon1v13 ай бұрын
Aluminum oxide doesn't cut vanadium carbides at all. That's the whole problem. Look at some microscopic pictures of a high carbide content steel sharpened with diamond abrasives vs one sharpened with AlOx. The diamond example is far more crisp and clean because it can actually cut and shape those carbides rather than just cutting the steel matrix around them.
@thiago.assumpcao3 ай бұрын
@@Aerzon1v1 Most people say that and it makes a lot of sense so it's quite convincing but there are no images to back it up. Science of Sharp has electron microscopy images showing clean cut carbides on Al Ox stones. Since Vanadium carbides are harder than Al Ox I don't know how that happens but the fact is that it does.

Do you always need to reestablish a burr when sharpening a knife? What if I have a decent working edge but want to get it back to hair whittling Sharp using a 3000-5000 grit stone.
@_BLANK_BLANK2 жыл бұрын
I do think you can potentially get away with a thinness this thin. Just not with a steel like s110v. Something like 4v, or magnacut might be able to handle that a bit better. Something with a little less carbide volume. Though it's still definitely super thin for an edc style knife.

@OUTDOORS552 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on the person. I don't bother with mine. 🙂👍
@autumn55922 жыл бұрын
Personally, I don't -- seems pretty pointless, because you're not going to need ultra fine edges like that for a working knife. I use 220 grit on my EDCs, then strop on black compound (2,500 grit.) Does everything I need it to do. High grit edges also experience less edge retention. Something around 600-800 grit is more than plenty. And at higher/finer grits, apex thickness doesn't really change, so you can't really get much 'sharper' from edge finish. Things like edge angle and blade thickness matter significantly more.

@metallican2295 Жыл бұрын
I have 2 moras that I keep hair whittling sharp, all I do is lay the knife completely flat on the stone and raise the angle until I feel the knife kinda "stop" on the correct angle. Once I have the angle I use one hand on the blade to guide the blade and keep it from convexing my edge and one hand to push the knife. You may not be able to get a perfectly flat grind by hand but over time you get better at it. Even if you accidentally mess it up you can always fix it 😊

appreciate the video but diamond followed by cbn is more sensitive to pressure issues than alox and resin bound stones. I believe someone like Larrin clarified that not too long back but I'd heard similar back when Cliff Stamp was still alive in discussions around it. IIRC it fractures the diamond due to brittleness and changes the grit rating and they really don't need pressure, more lighter passes is the correct technique. CBN is much tougher thus I like it as don't need to go as easy on the pass weight but plenty hard enough to deal with high carbide wear resistant steels. Problems from over pressure on resin bound chromeox and alox stones is more to do with burnishing and dishing the stones quickly but at least you can fix it where as pressure on dmt and the like trashes the stone and you need to buy new. I learned that the hard way myself starting years back with too much pressure although the stones still work so I kept them, just not consistent grit and not as intended so avoided pressure on my newer plates/stones.
@OUTDOORS552 жыл бұрын
After doing my own testing and making my own diamond plated stones id disagree. Its actually very difficult to break down diamonds that are well adheared in the nickel coat. Although grit does play a role. As well as nickel thickness and the type of diamond that is used. Its a somewhat difficult subject to discuss in a KZbin comment due to all the variables. Medium preis fine with a quality stone. Wont hurt a thing. Appreciate the feedback 👍

@metallican2295 Жыл бұрын
You can use coarse stones. They will take much less time to fix the blade. Unless you are using like 80 grit sandpaper it won't ruin the edge. If you use a higher grit stone to fix it you will take muuuuuch longer to fix the chip which in my experience makes it easier to use the wrong angle on accident. I've found the best is around 200 to 300 for fixing the edge, then around 800-1000 grit to get a good sharp edge. If you want to stop there you can, the tool will be very sharp at 1000 grit, but a leather strop with some honing compound will take off any left over metals on the edge of the blade for very clean cuts and even shaving.
