What a great video for ex-sydneysiders suffering from nostalgia. I am now 84 and living in Melbourne. But when I was 12 I would catch the train every weekend from Meadowbank to visit my Grandfather who lived in Macquarie Stree. Because I suffered damaged heart valves from catching rheumatic fever I could not play any form of sport, So I spent my weekends exploring Sydney by train by using my school rail pass. Strathfield was the main station when I went to school at St, Pat's and your Vid reminded me that thei was a licenced "Wine Bar" on each platform.You cuold not buy a beer, and possibly not spirits, but you could stay there drinking all day long if "The train was late" LoL. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. While I travellled to visit my Father's family, who lived right on the edge of the cliff overlooking Coledale Beach, a few stops before Bulli, when my Grandfather retired to Patonga Beach I used to go to the Hakesbury River by a compination of Electric and Steam trains, the only acces to Patonga was by ferry. It stil operates and travel accross Pittwater to Palm Beach. Thank you for a couple of very enjoyable hours I spent reliving my youth. Phil.

OMGOSH!! THANK YOU SO MUCH for this video. I was born and spent much of my growing up years living in the Greater Wollongong area, including in Thirroul. I took this train so many times but it NEVER got old. My favorite part of it was when the train rounds a bend and you get a brief look at the spectacular view of Wollongong and the coastal plain towns below before disappearing. I would be on the lookout for this vista every train trip. It’s been many decades since I moved to the USA, but Australia will always be home for me. I still have relied all over including in Wollongong so I visit whenever I’m back home (grew up between Wollongong, Sydney and Newcastle with jaunts to WA, QLD and VIC). I’ve often spoken about this amazing route and how if anyone was planning a trip to Oz that they should SO take a day trip to the Gong by train. I didn’t have a resource to show them the gorgeous countryside and coast. Until now!! THANK YOU 🙏!!

NZer here! @44:30 - Sutherland, where my brother lived for a couple of years - *beautiful* place! At least that's how I remember it when I was there in 2002. I found that Sydney doesn't feel at all like the huge city it is if you're just pottering around Darling Harbour. It feels very "right" - like a comfy pair of running shoes! It just "fits" - that's the best way I can describe it. *Great* city! I loved the small bit of the National Park that I saw on the southern edge of the city. Got in a couple of runs out there - beautiful place.
@doctorbohr15853 жыл бұрын
Yes, I guess sydney is like a big small town with the backdrop of a city. People actually notice each other's presence on the sidewalk, unlike in London, where they'd walk through you if they could. But get into a car today, and sydney now feels as big as it really is.

Mmm . . . interesting to see the trip from the front, instead of the usual side-view. BUT, a slightly-related question: Why is the line to Waterfall & Cronulla called the "Illawarra Line"? The Illawarra region starts at the municipal boundary (between Wollongong & Sutherland LGAs) which is a few kms SOUTH of Waterfall station!! So, the so-called 'Illawarra Line' doesn't go into the Illawarra. Perverse.😄

I love Sydney. The double decker train public transport is excellent and fares cheaper compared to NZ. They really need to improve transport between the station and bondi beach. Set up a light rail system, extend the current line, or purchase a fleet of double decker buses. You guys have driverless trains that run every 2 minutes right? Could divert the line to include the beach? New Zealand builds double decker buses, 100% electric and diesel ones for Wellington. They carry twice the capacity of single decker buses. With over 5 million people, and the hundreds of NZ and oversees visitors, public interest, and better budgeting skills, they could achieve this.

@@jeniferlaw4975 See that half-finished carcass of a train station they roll into around 1:44? That would have been Woollahra station, had the Eastern Suburbs NIMBYs not protested so hard they had to can it _during construction._ "In 1976, construction of the station was abandoned, the official reason given was to save $3.4 million. In reality, it was the outcry from Woollahra residents, some of whom were public identities, that forced the scrapping of the station. After the line was brought into service, many locals had a change of heart and began lobbying for the completion of the station but to no avail." - www.visitsydneyaustralia.com.au/lost-station-woollahra.html
@bright0nsounds3 жыл бұрын
@Angus Anthony Just asking because you're a local and I'm curious - what would you think of a short light rail connection similar to Newcastle's as a solution? I visit the Sutherland Shire frequently to see my partner, and I've long thought about the merits & downsides of replacing the Sutherland-Cronulla branch with a tram shuttle with more stops, but considering the absolute state of public transport in the area and how long it's stayed that way I don't imagine there'd be much public support.
