Me and my dog have this nice ritual, whenever I go out to get some wood for our fireplace she'll carry one log for me. She's always very proud to be helpful 😂
@dianad24854 жыл бұрын
She loves the smell of wood bark and I noticed every time I was collecting wood she would stick her face in the bag, so I started with some small branches. I would give it to her and make her follow me home and the branch she brought was her reward initially, I let her chew on it. Then she got hooked on it and just enjoyed carrying them for me 😂

Zak George, My name is Max. I have watched about 80% or so of your videos and purchased one of your books in anticipation of adopting a dog of my own. A client of mine put me in touch with a woman whose dog just had puppies. I couldn't turn down the opportunity to raise a dog from puppyhood, so three weeks ago I adopted a 7 week old Chihuahua mix and named her Maya. She is beloved by pretty much anyone who meets her and, aside from a bad habit of biting people's faces, has been a very good girl. I taught her to look at me, sit, lie down, crawl, roll over, shake hands, come when called, and leave it with... varying levels of success. Today, I was holding her and she decided to leap out of my arms. She fell 4 feet to the ground and broke metatarsals 2-5 on her right hind leg. I spent most of my Christmas at the emergency vet, which, luckily, was open in spite of the holiday. Maya will be in a cast, however, for the next 6-8 weeks. She will not be able to run, climb stairs, and may barely be able to walk. She won't be able to just be a puppy, and she definitely won't be able to train very well. How can I help Maya be happy while she is going through recovery? How can I continue to build communication skills with her? What difficulties should I expect? Please respond. Hearing your advice would greatly put my mind at ease. Also, tell Inertia I love her. EDIT: pasteboard.co/IMYrfmF.jpg This is Maya

It's really cool of you to be so transparent with the process, good and bad. Your videos are what I credit my dog's good behaviour with now as a 5-year-old, but we WENT THROUGH IT from ages 0-1.5 years. (She's an Australian Shepherd, so it was the worst mix of too smart and sassy. And so much barking, God.) I find it really rewarding and reassuring to see there are highs and lows even for a professional, and the only way to success is with persistence and consistency, and a healthy dose of humility. My girl is so amazing and reliable now, and it's clear she absorbed the lessons even when she was being a bit of an asshole. It's just all part of the process.

I’ve got a Mali at home and was having real issues training her. That was until I began watching your videos. I’ve watched a few different dog trainers and had little success before. My dog used to walk lovely off leash. She spent a few weeks away from me and when she came back she can’t be let off leash. She lunges for people barking, chases cyclists and generally didn’t listen to me. After watching your videos, and following them with my dog one topic at a time, I’ve seen a huge improvement in just FIVE DAYS. For the most part she now doesn’t pull on our walks. (Yup I used your tip of calling her back, turning around and going the other way if needs be). I found treat rewards work little but praise works better for her. She still barks at people but is getting better. Now when she hears a bike she automatically sits, often even before I can see the cyclist. She still then tries to chase it but it’s better. I’m having much more success with your training style. Can’t thank you enough for freely sharing all these training methods. My dog is only just over four months old, so we have a long way to go but thank goodness I came across your videos. I had started even wondering if I could cope with a Belgium malinois at all. (I didn’t intentionally get one, I was told she was a German Shepard as a young pup). Highly recommend Zac’s videos to all my dog owner friends now!

I really need some training advice, please. I have a puppy of unknown lineage (we're suspecting there's some Chow in there, though), around two months old, and her puppy biting is only becoming worse. Today, she bit someone hard enough to draw blood and refused to let go for several seconds. She ignores toys being offered to her as an alternative to biting people, them "yelping" to express pain, and them halting play and walking away when she gets too rough. The only strategy that remotely works is distracting her with food; either treating her the second she releases or asking her to do a trick first and THEN treating her. Even that is wildly inconsistent, however, in that she'll ignore even that when she's too focused on biting. We can't just wait for her to want to start cooperating, either, because I suspect that the biting is starting to go beyond play, becoming actual aggression to get her way. For example, she's sometimes afraid (?) of going outside - I don't know why - and will bite HARD to avoid it when we attempt to leash her, only to proceed to have an accident inside. Our house also lacks proper timeout areas and we're not sure how she'll respond to them anyways. I'm trying to curb my expectations as to how long training this biting behavior out of her will take, but she's under my mother's jurisdiction and, if we don't get her to stop biting before it becomes directed at her, too, she'll ensure that she doesn't stick around long.

RogueRunner plz don’t give her away but try to get her into a k9 school or a training program, some lessons are free
@illuminessences4 жыл бұрын
First, start crate training asap. Crates and wire pens provide structure and a safe space for the puppy and you when you're feeling overwhelmed with their behavior. Don't use it as punishment, but more as a break but keep it positive. Feed meals in there, do crate games. As for the biting, she's still a baby. Try not to have a reaction to the biting as it'll only encourage it. Keep redirecting. Best thing is to not give her the opportunity to reinforce the behavior. As for the leash issue, keep a leash on her at all times for awhile. Try to do some engagement games outside to build association that outside is fun! Just some ideas! It will get better - I have a bitey 11 week old gsd 😉 A trainer to help with the basics is a good idea, too! Good luck!
@roguerunner56054 жыл бұрын
@@illuminessences Thanks for the advice! I'll try to keep it mind. I'm just not sure what to do when she's in the middle of biting, as she'll frequently become so hyper-focused on it that nothing else matters, food, training, playing, or otherwise. I can't even play with her when she's NOT biting anymore, at least 50% of the time; I have no idea why, but she's lost interest in her toys, and the times that she does randomly decide to play are exceptions. I'm worried that she might have some form of depression or something.
@roguerunner56054 жыл бұрын
@@joshitabureddy4204 Unfortunately, that isn't up to me. I can try recommending such programs to my mother if I happen to find any, but, in the end, whether or not the puppy can actually attend consistently would be up to her. As much as *I* want to keep the puppy, all I can do is train her well enough in the hopes that my mother will have no reason to get rid of her if she's well-behaved.
@illuminessences4 жыл бұрын
@@roguerunner5605 RogueRunner Not sure what kind of toys you are using but maybe try experimenting with some toys that are more like a rag and are more fluttery and maybe squeak. And move them side to side and see if that gets her attention. If that works, use two similar toys so you always have one to redirect her on if she comes off the other to bite. Flirt poles can also be really fun if that sparks her interest. Some dogs just aren't into toys, too but she's young and you can work on it. My older dog I had to build up her toy drive when she was 3. She will only play now if it's with me. It may take a bit of figuring out what she likes. Otherwise, get some chews for her and redirect her on those to keep her busy. Puppies have short attention spans so toys may not be the thing to keep her occupied right now. It also helps to give them a short, but stern "no" and disengage. Put her in a pen if she is persistent and end the session. Body language means a lot. She's only 8 weeks, so I'd consider this very normal behavior. Puppy brain can be frustrating but they will grow out of it if you're consistent.

I'm in shock about the Bark Box at 40 bucks a month!!! Maybe everyone here is richer than I am and don't have children, but that's close to 500 bucks a year for stuff that your dog doesn't need and may not even like. I am certainly capable of treating a dog to fun stuff that I pick out and it certainly won't be anywhere near 40 bucks a month. And guess what... the dog is just as happy!
@kaeli4 жыл бұрын
Comments like this frustrate me. Zak didn't say you had to get them, only that they were a resource. And for those who don't know where to find good safe toys for their dog, 40 dollars in comparison for toys and treats is actually pretty reasonable. Also, do you pay to watch these videos? No. But BarkBox sponsorships do, and help the rest of the community like us have access to a trainer who is honestly revolutionizing how people view dog training.
@hollyperrin73534 жыл бұрын
@@kaeli I'm sorry if my comment frustrates you. I'm not ashamed to be watching YT for free, just as you are. I also understand how sponsorships work. BarkBox is ridiculously pricey and dogs don't need new toys every month. That's an issue that I have with a lot of consumers who have things shipped to themselves every month. Seems like a good idea at the time, right? But, you're being duped and your ruthless consumerism is killing this planet. Live simply so that others may simply live... .

My family has a German Shepherd mix puppy, and when on family walks he becomes very anxious, sometimes whining and barking, as he wants to be able to mill around and check in with all of the kids as well as showing some subtle herding behaviour. I have just been addressing his pulling with a variety of different techniques sometimes by redirecting his focus by asking him to sit or something, sometimes turning and walking the other direction when he pulls, ect (depending on his mood, energy level, the environment ect) and though I am seeing some slight progress it is definitely not as much as I am hoping to see. I have leash trained 3+ puppies before but haven't encountered these behaviours yet. I would love to hear some suggestions!

She is a lovely dog but she is scared of strangers, suhe was fine with me. 3 days ago we went on a walk like usual but near the end of our walk my wallet fell out of my pocket and she panicked. She was so scared she almost made me fall because she pulled on the leash so hard. This absolutaly breaks my heart, and I have no idea what to do now.

Sharingan literally the first day you get the dog, so now would be perfect! The earlier the better.

How do I stop my puppy from mouthing? Could you please make a video about that, I have tried and tried to stop her but she won’t listen
@evzevz064 жыл бұрын
I'm sure he has videos on it. All I did with mine was I stroked him first thing in morning when he was calm, when he mouthed i say No take my hand away and stand up, give him a few seconds to realise that when he bit, I stopped, then stroke him or play with him again. Repeat the stopping of attention every single time he bit. I was lucky he completely stopped mouthing and play biting me or other people in 2 weeks.

Same as evzevz06. I remember for my dog the worst faze was between 5 and 8 months. I always had to have a toy near me, and every time she would start mouthing I would redirect it to a toy. Eventually at about 9 months old, she started bringing the toy to me, to tell me that she needed to get some energy out, that was so rewarding. I'm telling you man, it's just like children, you have to put up with it for a bit, but if you commit to the training you see great results. Wish you the best of luck!

Mouthing, jumping, biting, is how puppies ask for attention - you want them to learn a new 'polite' way of asking for attention - typically the auto sit. So, when they are asking for attention rudely - dont give it (no touching, eye contact, or talking - you may need to turn away or leave the room if they are particularly bad). Then when they give up the rude behaviour, or offer a behaviour you do like, give them that attention. Teaching sit and praising them when they offer a sit without you asking can help them learnt he auto sit - they know its a behaviour you do like and does give them attention, so they begin offering that.

@@laylaflame that is SO true and well said! My puppy auto sits all the time now because he knows that it's what I like him to do!

Just curious but why did you stop clicker training?
@FrancesBaconandEggs4 жыл бұрын
Horsesaremylife I was wondering too!!!!
@EverydayLJnz4 жыл бұрын
I am guessing it is because clicker training is usually the precursor to a marker word such as yes and captures the moment they do something you like very accurately. Once they have learned by shaping with a clicker you can usually wean them off onto verbal command with food rewards and other things like play.

you should start a live stream so that everyone can see how long something might take.

Lol, good one. If that happened the whole positive, negative dog training concepts would melt away.

Hey Zak, do you have any suggestions for cues a person with mobility issues could use to train? I am currently training my Rottweiler puppy on a tabletop, but I"d like to know what I can do when he is bigger.
