Question: what would happen to the apple token if the custodian no longer has access to the wallet? would the token then be lost forever?

Good question and one I assume many people are wondering. First, this is a little hypothetical at the moment, considering we're not at the point of denoting public companies with tokens. Second, assume any custodian will have a multi-sig wallet and pretty robust security measures in place. To date, Coinbase hasn't had a wallet breach. That'll be the standard. Third, tokens are simply smart contracts. We can write them such that if a wallet is corrupted or "lost" we can recreate the tokens and burn the old ones. We're not going to have a situation where a custodian holding billions to trillions of dollars in assets has a single point of failure

NFTs have so much potential for securitization and other uses (ie Real estate, etc) but crypto has wasted it all by using it for worthless garbage art.
