I love your videos; but, I have to say this is truly the first time I have anything substantive to add. Those APC rack mount UPSs are NOT intended to be mounted in a rack as you demonstrated. The reason you said at 9:45 that it was difficult is because it is not meant to be installed as shown...it is also why the back end hung down...if you were not already on the bottom of the rack, you probably would have bent the sides. All APC 2U and above UPS (and battery expansion packs) are intended to be installed on a RAIL KIT. If you had the rails in, it would have been 100x easier to install on your own. You can also see the square metal guides (the small square metal pieces screwed into each rear side) were already installed the back sides of the UPS you installed. Like all things APC, there are 20 different part numbers for the same thing...but look up SRTRK4 and you will see what I am talking about. Unfortunately, APC sells the UPSs with and without the rails (for some unknown reason)...buying the APC part number is expensive (around $125 and up) but if you look for them on eBay in the event you get a RM UPS without the included rail kit...they are a way better deal. Anyway, this series was awesome and I do love your content...but that UPS install is missing a key critical element...I highly recommend for your rack's well being and any future serviceability...put the rails in.

Excellent video! You mentioned devices shutting down gracefully. Can you make a video of that configuration process?? And testing that devices are shutting down gracefully. Thank you for your hard work. 😃

Depends on the model and features of the UPS, if it has built-in network, it should supply features like the Network UPS Tools (NUT), if it has USB you can connect that to the machine you want to shutdown, if you have more than one machine to take care of, one will have to take the USB and supply a NUT server for the other machines. Devices like switches and routers usually don't get shut down, power loss is ok for them in most use cases

I am using an old UPS where I can buy 12V 7Ah batteries. The batteries in the new devices have been converted to manufacturer-specific batteries. There is no point in giving up an old UPS because batteries are available from many stores. The only problem is to connect all nine batteries correctly in series and in parallel. The UPS battery voltage is 38VDC. The UPS power is not enough for everything I need and that is the problem. I can make a network that starts to shut itself down, but the UPS power is not enough to keep the whole network on. 9 batteries keep 1 or 2 servers on. An entire room full of computers is too big load for my ups. The server powers are small, but the largest power supply for a gaming computer is 1.5kW.

I have always used max power consumption of switches for sizing my UPS. Is this wrong?

No - that's a great strategy.

So even with constant power (no outage), a failing UPS will still take down the devices connected?
@sitte24

Of course it will. That's why really critical infrastructure devices usually come with at least 2 power supplies and get fed up by two separate UPS which are connected to different circuits. But that's nothing you will see in most SMB installs

Most batteries die after 3 years. You should be careful after 3 years and measure runtime of batteries.

Live the videos but as a data center guy you should never go with APC instead you should go with Eaton
