I was in Madrid in July and only discovered the Gran Reserva (on tap) at the airport bar waiting for my flight home. It was probably my favourite beer of the entire trip!

They used to do the cruz campo gran reserva on the sub. I got a torp and hated it at first, but ended up being gutted when I finished it. Nothing really hit the same on the sub after that.

I find any lager with a high ABV is usually kind of rough around the edges. Ales seem to do the high ABV much better. A good lager for me is around 5%.

I buy local beers and eat snacks in the sun on holiday too!

Recently had the good fortune to be in Turin on Saturday and managed to sniff out a craft beer pub. St.Bernardus Christmas Ale at 10%. Lovely drop.

I turned up late for work four times this month and every time, it was too many Monster Munch the night before . Think I've got a bit of a problem . Nice review Simon. Aldi were doing a nice Gran Reserva last year at around 6% can't remember the brand though

Cruzcampo isn't considered a great beer in Spain though. If you want a great beer Alhambra is a cracking brewery, Reserva 1925: is what you want 👌

Spanish beer will never be the best, but it makes refreshing malty dry lagers that can be sessioned. What's not to love

I'm fairly sure Cebado is Barley. Apologies if that's already been pointed out and I missed it.

On the Belgian beer. Dubbel and Triple are Trappist naming conventions, if this isn’t an abbey beer it would not use either name. It’s not ‘getting on for a dubbel’ because it’s the wrong colour for a start. If anything it could be called a Belgian ‘strong ale’ which is what most non-Trappist 8+% golden beers would be called (think Duvel)

Even if it does contain maize, it can still be an all malt beer. Maize can be malted just like barley.

Celebration of the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge 80 years ago right now, Belgium and Luxembourg. The Allies won of course but Simon still has the Bulge. Tribute to all the heroes.

If they picked a traditional English beer and brewed it in Spain, would it be rubbish? I think not

Have the Belgians ever brewed a dreadful beer? When I've worked over there we would go to bar/restaurants for lunches and have a local beer of around 4% ABV and it was still very palatable; just the thing for lunch so you didn't sleep in the afternoon. I think any Belgian brewery producing stuff like our breweries do would soon be out of business.
