I agree with your comment about best bitter and other traditional ales. So many pubs, at least in my area, have jumped on the band waggon and sell pretty much only pale beers that are heavily hopped.

Harveys Best is very popular here in Hastings, there's a pub that sells it for £2.55 a pint, and it's first class, although I find Harveys best a bit too spicy - strong taste of cinnamon or nutmeg?

I attended the trade day on Tuesday, I had a season ticket so also went on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I was disappointed this year with the beer list which didn't have any tasting notes or any notes about which acts were playing on the stage or details about the food stands. Having said that it was good to see that the pricing of the beers was not pegged at central London prices of over £5 per pint, I'd say that the pricing was more like outer or outside London prices which was good compared with the prices at the last GBBF which were eye watering. I'm a fan of "traditional" amber, brown or ruby ales. I feel that the current trend for over hopped citrus pale ales is damaging the industry. There are too many good beers that appear to have disappeared in favour of IPA's. In a favoured pub that I use they have 10 cask ales on, 3 are standards and always available: Bass, Harvey's Sussex Bitter and Big Smoke Solaris. The other 7 will be guest beers, recently there have been occasions where 6 of the other beers have been strong citrus IPA where as most of the customers were drinking Bass or Sussex which ran out! I've started drinking porter or even milk stout! Despite the smaller footprint of the festival this year due to the building work I think that the festival was a success. I felt that it was a bit under attended however in chats with CAMRA staff at the festival they stated that the takings were up on the last festival. I am a CAMRA life member though my only CAMRA activities are attending beer festivals and claiming discounts offered by some pubs to CAMRA members.
@jonathanlake60532 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I agree with your view on the IPA's & also I'm getting tired of the Citra brews. Things are not as they used to be regarding tasting notes from the last Beer Festivals that I have attended.Some of those prices are taking the proverbial for a beer.I think some of the brewers are aiming for a more exclusive market,good luck to them if they can get the money,more decent Ale for the rest of us,I say!
