FLAPS DISAGREE AFTER TAKEOFF. American Boeing 737. REAL ATC

25 July 2023.
An American Airlines Boeing 737-800 registration N910AN, performing flight AAL2844 from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (KDFW) to McAllen International Airport (KMFE).
After departure requested to stop climb and to return back to DFW Airport
due to configuration issue. The air traffic controller informed the pilots that the altitude information on the radar was unavailable. Later the crew declared PAN-PAN, and reported flaps disagree.

Really odd to hear both ATC and the pilot use the word "gear" to refer to ARFF (or CFR). Given how vital landing gear is in an emergency situation this would seem to be a problematic misuse of the word even though both people seemed to understand the reference was for ARFF.

Also seems serious that the mode C transponder was malfunctioning and not making altitude information available. Is there only one on the aircraft? I wonder if the got that issue resolved.

Landing with reduced flaps is pretty straight forward with being under MLW. Just an inconvenience really.

Seems like every emergency call (pan pan, mayday, and security) should be called out three times according to Google.

The initial call is Pan Pan, Pan Pan, Pan Pan.

The proper (ICAO standard way) is “Pan-Pan, Pan-Pan, Pan-Pan”. Similar to how Mayday is repeated thrice.

Initially pan-pan, pan-pan, pan-pan and can be pan-pan on subsequent transmissions (eg. changing freq).
