A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-700 registration N961WN, performing flight from
Denver International Airport (KDEN) to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (KAUS).
After departure
declared an emergency, reported engine number 2 failure and requested return back to KDEN.

It’s nice when they let you know about traffic - even though no danger, just nice to have the awareness in case the plane doesn’t do what you tell it to. I’d like to see what kind of mental gymnastics ATC has to go through to make room in the pattern for an emergency aircraft. It’s not just the pilots under a heavy workload, is my guess.

The southwest pilots were so calm and professional that I found this video boring. A testament to the quality of training these pilot have.

I've heard that before but I think souls is the preferred term because there might be dead bodies on board who's souls have already departed.

Although I would not argue the point in that situation, I'm a total non-believer so I don't count myself as a soul. I would prefer the term "persons on board" but I do understand why this generic term has come to be standard practice. It is succinct and translates readily across a large number of languages and cultures, thereby making it a useful term for emergency communications.

So, is it not practice in the US to declare either Pan-Pan or Mayday when you have an 'emergency situation', I thought that fuel remaining should be expressed in Lbs or Kg's and not flight time as volume differs based upon aircraft type and route...? But then this is SouthWest.

That's the very reason why it is expressed in flight time instead of fuel quantity. The pilots know their performance numbers based on fuel consumption (taxi, takeoff, cruise climb, etc) so quantity itself is relatively meaningless without applied context. When expressed in flight time that gives a defined variable to what options are available. Also, while this was an emergency situation they were already on frequency and in active 2-way communication with tower/departure control. Using Mayday or Pan-Pan would be a bit redundant to clear the channel for priority when ATC was already actively taking steps to assist the situation.

@@matthoman504 utter nonsense, the fuel quantity by volume is essential information for field fire and rescue in order to preempt potential fire size and spillage, it’s part of the risk assessment made pre-landing.

@@matthoman504 I fly from Europe to North America, primarily Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis and SanFran, and to Asia via Dubai. The general lack of professionalism exhibited by some ATC, in particular, in the US always both intrigues and concerns me.

@@highlandersixtysix Makes sense ‐ I've only been flying GA and haven't experienced 121 operations just yet so I don't know for sure, as emergency cleanup prep operations on that scale don't apply. The ATC observation is legitimate, and even various regionally within the continental US so I've heard. My sister's husband flies similar to your routes, I could ask him for another perspective.
