In this lesson we learn the three main factors that play a role in determining the boiling point and melting point of alkanes. 1) The length of the carbon chain - as the carbon chain get longer the boiling point and melting point increase. 2) the branching of the structure - increased branching decreases the melting point and boiling point of the molecule. 3) Cyclic vs linear structure - for the same size molecule, cyclic structures have higher melting points and boiling points. Lastly we work through a number of practice problems applying these principles.
