I love the way the Teutonic Knights morphed into Prussia and later unified Germany. I mean that’s gotta be worth something.

A much overlooked segment of the crusades, a sort of "third son." In novels and movies everything seems to center on the Holy Land, with occasional nods to Iberia -- "El Cid" comes to mind. I don't recall evern reading a novel, or seeing a movie, that had the northern crusades as it's setting. It would be an interesting story. As awesome as always, "J."

There is the classic film " Alexander Nevsky", which was a crusade like war of the Teutonic knights against the Orthodox Russian Slavs.

teutonic order was the most secular order. they attacked and annexed territories of christian countries. so they basically betrayed the ideas of crusades.

When an organization gets defeated by a nation, I don't think the organization has that much to be embarrassed about. Its quite a powerful organization to even think about giving battle to a nation, especially one like Kieven Russia, don't you think?

AstaInar Explanation: Three centuries of the Northern Crusades against the Slavs non Catholics (against Orthodox Slavs) a priori are not the history of Christianization in Europe! I remind you that Pope George clarified the direction of the fire and sword of the Northern Crusades against the Slavs - this direction in the Northern Crusades against Orthodox Russia (!) with a culminating in the world-famous "failure of the Crusaders" on the ice of Lake Peipsi (in 1242) In the battle of the catholic Christians against Orthodox Christians led by Prince Alexander Nevsky of Novgorod

The Baltic crusaders were pure acts of aggresion made by intolerant and so called "loving Christians"! I've been in Lithuania and couldn't believe that this long lasting pagan country of Europe had such a strong imprint made by the Catholic church from Rome, where all traces that reminds of its pagan past had been erased.
@RealCrusadesHistory5 жыл бұрын
There are two sides to the issue. The pagan Baltic and Slavic tribes made frequent slave raids against the Christians. The selling of slaves was a major source of income. This in part provoked the Northern Crusades.
@Ghost-vi8qm5 жыл бұрын
@@RealCrusadesHistory I really don't believe that is true. Who are they going to sell the Christian slaves too? All there neighboring states were Christians themselves. And don't you know before Lithuania was so big, the small Baltic pagan tribes like the Prussians were conquererd by the Teutons and forced to convert by the sword, there lands ruled by Teutonic lords and replaced by other Germans.

Being a Lithuanian, I would not really agree. Even so called Catholics practice Pagan traditions. The believes were so strong that the church could not do anything and "accepted" local practices as christian. Our Pagan community is the fastest growing one even officially while christian numbers decline.
@borealis98424 жыл бұрын
@@Ghost-vi8qm They would probably sell it to other tribes. Remember Baltic territories were not ruled by a single state, but many different tribes.
