@@splintercell5551 Spain defeated the Ottoman Empire in great battles, look if it defeated them in the important thing, that in the West there is no trace of Turkish invasion, in large part, that is due to the Spanish victories over the Ottoman Empire, it can be said that Spain saved to the West and possibly also to Russia and who knows if to China, of being today all under the crescent ... An example of what I say, not only the battle of Lepanto, which meant stopping the Turkish invasion aspirations over all of Western Europe and his plans also included once all of Europe was invaded, going to all of Eastern and Northern Europe Eastern including Russia. for example Spain commanded the defense of VIENNA, if Spain did not intervene, VIENNA WOULD HAVE FALLEN ...

King Philip II of Spain wasn't one of the most powerful monarchs in Europe, he was _the_ most powerful in the world. The only true threat being the Ottomans, which were defeated here. The Spanish Golden Age is often downplayed in modern history because our history books are written with an English/Protestant twist. But make no mistake, they were the first global hegemons. You just can't argue it. They financed the entire "holy league". Directly _and_ indirectly. John of Austria being a Spaniard himself. And commanding the entirety of the fleet at the behest of the King of Spain. That's some lost history for ya.

***** Yeah, the bitter truth is that England is irrelevant to most early modern history. They don't start to matter until the late 18th century. And so they focus a lot on that period. While ignoring the fact that Spain built our concept of Europe. Which is more important than what Britain accomplished, honestly. "An Englishman is a person who does things because they have been done before. An American is a person who does things because they haven't been done before." -Mark Twain

***** Well, it depends on what you think happened next. Most people seem to think that was the end of Spain. It wasn't. They became more powerful after that, not less. More. England wasn't in the same league at all. After the Spanish ships were wrecked in a storm of the coast off Ireland, Britain responded with an Armada of their own. Which was wrecked by a handful of Spanish women from Galicia. They were under the impression that Spain was serious. The "armada" was actually a halfhearted attempt. Spain wasn't very interested in taking Britain. They had already bested England _and_ the Netherlands armies together effortlessly. And Spain eventually did take over Britain. There was a period of about ten years where Philip owned England, France, and Ireland. Who knew, right? ::The More You Know::

+Pinpinpun Who said Spain lacked sailors? They had that and the hand to hand combat that won the battle. Anyway, I'm not trying to downplay Italy, I have better things to do than spite people. The Spanish were actually quite fond of Italians back then. It just weirds me out how Victorian Britain is all over my textbook, but Golden Age Spain is not mentioned and is splintered into smaller footnotes. It's anti-Catholic propaganda.
@johnnonamegibbon3580
@johnnonamegibbon3580 8 жыл бұрын
***** Spanish history is written out of most history books. Most history books are based on an English view of world history. During the Victorian era, Spain was pretty much erased completely by the British. Very few people know about Lepanto. Or Spain. And when they do, they assume it was a bunch of Italians who fought. Many modern Italians, for example, assume that Spain must have not been important. Since most historians don't mention it. so they quietly downplay Spain's role in their history. Virtually all European countries now do this.
@johnnonamegibbon3580

***** Most Italians I've spoken to have a weird, almost self-hating view of their and Spain's history. They imply that Spain held Italy back. Which isn't true, they protected them from foreigner after the Renaissance (Italy's peak) had passed. They imply that Austrians were great people who treated them better, which is also not true. Italians hated Austrians, especially in the south were they were seen as abusive and uncoordinated. They assume that norther Italy was always better. The south, they say, was held back by Spain. All of which is wrong. Spain owned all of Italy, hence their immediate aid of the Venetians. They were seen as intelligent and in need of immediate military protection. Also, the South was the part of Italy that held most of the wealth throughout its history. In the 1800's the north plundered the south and channeled the wealth to themselves. That's why Italy looks disjointed now. That novel proves my point for me. Oh, the horror! Spain owned us and stopped foreigners from obliterating us! The novel may be good, but is ultimately based on bad history. So I don't respect it. It's a bitter attack that doesn't know who it's attacking or why. Does it surprise you that the novel was written by a Northern Italian in the 1800's? It's the kind of blatant anti-Spanish (and Italian) propaganda I was referring to. It's exactly what I was referring to before I even wrote all of this. Hell, the walls around Milan, where the author was born, were built by Spaniards. It had no defenses. They even begged for the Spanish constitution for Milan that they _loved_ but the author _accidentally_ forgot. What a hypocrite. "Oh, those damn Spaniards! Holding us back!" "How'd they hold you back?" "I don't know, but damn them! Grrr.." It's typical 1800's Black Legend "Protestant and Northern Europe is better and has always been because I hate that Southern Catholics owned us" butthurt nonsense. Many of those authors are ashamed of being Italian and wish they were part of northern Europe. Funny thing is that it ultimately hurts Italian history more in the process. And Northern Europe sucked back then. Edit: The Wikipedia article , which was probably written by some weird anti-Spanish zealot, claims that the novel is based on the period of "Austrian rule". There was no "Austrian rule". It was Spanish rule. Hence all of the characters not being Austrian. Another common misconception seems to be to give Austria credit for things Spain does. Why? I don't know. Maybe to remove Spain from their history I assume? Do you see where I'm going with this? I don't hate Italy. I hate their historians. They're anti-catholic, self-hating pussies who cave in to pressure form protestant historians.

Álvaro de Bazán, one of the greatest naval commanders in history, who defeated a much larger french fleet at the Azores, ended english piracy numerous times, and more, is the hero of Lepanto. Thanks to his thirty galleys placed at the rear he saved the day. Twice. He did so by covering the gaps in the catholic line of battle, first by protecting the right side and then later saving the left. He was going to lead the Enterprise of England in 1588 but died shortly before. Much would´ve been different if he had leaded that endeavor. God rest him in peace.

He had been put in the rearguard exactly for this, to fill the gaps, because, having 31% numerical inferiority (50% once 30 galleys had been put in reserve) it was SURE that some gap would have opened during the battle in the Christian line. Obviously it needed a competent commander to realize where his contribute was needed the most and to move the ships accordingly, for that he was choosen for this delicate task, but he did his work like any other.

After Lepando came the Gates of Vienna with the great victory of the Polish King Sobieski and his warriors, this time the defense being organized by Blessed Pope Innocent XI. Interestingly that battle took place on September 11 1683. Did Ben Laden choose that date to attack the NY twin towers? Probably. As for Cenvantes, he was wounded with and his left arm remained bad for the rest of his life. He was sick on the day of the battle but he showed his bravery in the fight and this was recognized by Don Juan of Austria. Later on his return from Italy to Spain he was kidnapped by muslim pirates and spent time as a prisoner in Algeria until the Trinitarian priests were able to pay for his rescue. He also showed generosity towards his fellow prisoners there as he offered to wait longer to be rescued so that others could get out of the muslim prison before him. He was a man of faith and courage. These days there are not many like him left.

It's all about courage and bigger guns. The League's galleys were less, but more modern and with better artillery than the Ottoman ones. Altough undefeated, it could be said that technically the Ottoman fleet was past its peak point in respect to the others. 60 years later, in the Cretan war, the Venetian fleet routinetly beaten the Ottoman one, even in much worse numerical inferiority, but unfortunately Venice had not enough troops to exploit its naval successes, and ended up losing Crete after a 19 years struggle.

Poem! Lepanto BY G. K. CHESTERTON White founts falling in the courts of the sun, And the Soldan of Byzantium is smiling as they run; There is laughter like the fountains in that face of all men feared, It stirs the forest darkness, the darkness of his beard, It curls the blood-red crescent, the crescent of his lips, For the inmost sea of all the earth is shaken with his ships. They have dared the white republics up the capes of Italy, They have dashed the Adriatic round the Lion of the Sea, And the Pope has cast his arms abroad for agony and loss, And called the kings of Christendom for swords about the Cross, The cold queen of England is looking in the glass; The shadow of the Valois is yawning at the Mass; From evening isles fantastical rings faint the Spanish gun, And the Lord upon the Golden Horn is laughing in the sun. Dim drums throbbing, in the hills half heard, Where only on a nameless throne a crownless prince has stirred, Where, risen from a doubtful seat and half attainted stall, The last knight of Europe takes weapons from the wall, The last and lingering troubadour to whom the bird has sung, That once went singing southward when all the world was young, In that enormous silence, tiny and unafraid, Comes up along a winding road the noise of the Crusade. Strong gongs groaning as the guns boom far, Don John of Austria is going to the war, Stiff flags straining in the night-blasts cold In the gloom black-purple, in the glint old-gold, Torchlight crimson on the copper kettle-drums, Then the tuckets, then the trumpets, then the cannon, and he comes. Don John laughing in the brave beard curled, Spurning of his stirrups like the thrones of all the world, Holding his head up for a flag of all the free. Love-light of Spain-hurrah! Death-light of Africa! Don John of Austria Is riding to the sea. Mahound is in his paradise above the evening star, (Don John of Austria is going to the war.) He moves a mighty turban on the timeless houri’s knees, His turban that is woven of the sunset and the seas. He shakes the peacock gardens as he rises from his ease, And he strides among the tree-tops and is taller than the trees, And his voice through all the garden is a thunder sent to bring Black Azrael and Ariel and Ammon on the wing. Giants and the Genii, Multiplex of wing and eye, Whose strong obedience broke the sky When Solomon was king. They rush in red and purple from the red clouds of the morn, From temples where the yellow gods shut up their eyes in scorn; They rise in green robes roaring from the green hells of the sea Where fallen skies and evil hues and eyeless creatures be; On them the sea-valves cluster and the grey sea-forests curl, Splashed with a splendid sickness, the sickness of the pearl; They swell in sapphire smoke out of the blue cracks of the ground,- They gather and they wonder and give worship to Mahound. And he saith, “Break up the mountains where the hermit-folk can hide, And sift the red and silver sands lest bone of saint abide, And chase the Giaours flying night and day, not giving rest, For that which was our trouble comes again out of the west. We have set the seal of Solomon on all things under sun, Of knowledge and of sorrow and endurance of things done, But a noise is in the mountains, in the mountains, and I know The voice that shook our palaces-four hundred years ago: It is he that saith not ‘Kismet’; it is he that knows not Fate ; It is Richard, it is Raymond, it is Godfrey in the gate! It is he whose loss is laughter when he counts the wager worth, Put down your feet upon him, that our peace be on the earth.” For he heard drums groaning and he heard guns jar, (Don John of Austria is going to the war.) Sudden and still-hurrah! Bolt from Iberia! Don John of Austria Is gone by Alcalar. St. Michael’s on his mountain in the sea-roads of the north (Don John of Austria is girt and going forth.) Where the grey seas glitter and the sharp tides shift And the sea folk labour and the red sails lift. He shakes his lance of iron and he claps his wings of stone; The noise is gone through Normandy; the noise is gone alone; The North is full of tangled things and texts and aching eyes And dead is all the innocence of anger and surprise, And Christian killeth Christian in a narrow dusty room, And Christian dreadeth Christ that hath a newer face of doom, And Christian hateth Mary that God kissed in Galilee, But Don John of Austria is riding to the sea. Don John calling through the blast and the eclipse Crying with the trumpet, with the trumpet of his lips, Trumpet that sayeth ha! Domino gloria! Don John of Austria Is shouting to the ships. King Philip’s in his closet with the Fleece about his neck (Don John of Austria is armed upon the deck.) The walls are hung with velvet that is black and soft as sin, And little dwarfs creep out of it and little dwarfs creep in. He holds a crystal phial that has colours like the moon, He touches, and it tingles, and he trembles very soon, And his face is as a fungus of a leprous white and grey Like plants in the high houses that are shuttered from the day, And death is in the phial, and the end of noble work, But Don John of Austria has fired upon the Turk. Don John’s hunting, and his hounds have bayed- Booms away past Italy the rumour of his raid Gun upon gun, ha! ha! Gun upon gun, hurrah! Don John of Austria Has loosed the cannonade. The Pope was in his chapel before day or battle broke, (Don John of Austria is hidden in the smoke.) The hidden room in man’s house where God sits all the year, The secret window whence the world looks small and very dear. He sees as in a mirror on the monstrous twilight sea The crescent of his cruel ships whose name is mystery; They fling great shadows foe-wards, making Cross and Castle dark, They veil the plumèd lions on the galleys of St. Mark; And above the ships are palaces of brown, black-bearded chiefs, And below the ships are prisons, where with multitudinous griefs, Christian captives sick and sunless, all a labouring race repines Like a race in sunken cities, like a nation in the mines. They are lost like slaves that sweat, and in the skies of morning hung The stair-ways of the tallest gods when tyranny was young. They are countless, voiceless, hopeless as those fallen or fleeing on Before the high Kings’ horses in the granite of Babylon. And many a one grows witless in his quiet room in hell Where a yellow face looks inward through the lattice of his cell, And he finds his God forgotten, and he seeks no more a sign- (But Don John of Austria has burst the battle-line!) Don John pounding from the slaughter-painted poop, Purpling all the ocean like a bloody pirate’s sloop, Scarlet running over on the silvers and the golds, Breaking of the hatches up and bursting of the holds, Thronging of the thousands up that labour under sea White for bliss and blind for sun and stunned for liberty. Vivat Hispania! Domino Gloria! Don John of Austria Has set his people free! Cervantes on his galley sets the sword back in the sheath (Don John of Austria rides homeward with a wreath.) And he sees across a weary land a straggling road in Spain, Up which a lean and foolish knight forever rides in vain, And he smiles, but not as Sultans smile, and settles back the blade.... (But Don John of Austria rides home from the Crusade.)

I like the fact that there is not even a mention of the proud italian admirals, or any italians except the Pope (which of course he could not toss away for obvious reasons). Brits intellectuals and aristocracy and their pariahs from their ex colonies always hated italians in the depth of their hearts and had and will always undermine our grand efforts and achievements.

No, the 8th century battle of Tours, in which the Frankish (French) king, Charles Martel ("the Hammer") literally stemmed the tide of a ferociously determined Islamic wave that was threatening the very gates of Vienna. Lepanto is important and is chiefly remembered by pious Roman Catholics as the battle which brought down to an infirmary the great soldier, Inigo de Loyola, who, while recovering from a severe leg injury, would read religious confessional books, decide to convert and would later study for the priesthood. Why is he so chiefly remembered? For he would found, with the papal blessing, a religious order of his own modelled on military discipline and obedience. He would later go on to become better known by his Latinized/Hellenized name of Ignatius. IGNATIUS de Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, which history would come to love-and loathe-as the Jesuits, from whose ranks the current Pope, Pope Francis comes...

Thanks to the victory of Spain, papacy, Venice, order of Malta, Savoy, the invasion plans by the Ottoman Empire were stopped. The ultimate goal of the Ottoman empire was to dominate the known world, from north to south, and from east to west, that was its ultimate goal, and possibly if in that legendary battle of Lepanto the Ottomans had won, the western world is more than It is possible that today it would be under the crescent and with the Islamic religion ... And I'm not exaggerating one iota. The Ottoman empire until Lepanto, there was no army that could stop it, the world shook just hearing the word Janissary or Ottoman, in addition, they had a reputation of being great fighters in close combat and quite cruel with their defeated, to whom they used to pass. to knife or literally to break, ... The victory in the battle of Lepanto by the holy league, showed the world that the Ottomans were not invincible as they were believed until then, the chronicles speak that possibly said mythical battle of Lepanto, has been the bloodiest and most frightening naval battle history in terms of extreme violence ....... The weight of the battle was carried above all in the approaches, where it was carried out by the Spanish thirds in hand-to-hand combat against the powerful Janissaries and other soldiers of the Ottoman Empire ..... In those times, even despite the almost mythical fame of the Janissaries, they faced not an equal but the only one who was superior to them, that is, the Spanish soldiers of the Tercios ... The latter, that is, the soldiers of the Spanish thirds, were accustomed to hand-to-hand fighting, they were authentic killing machines, many were true masters of the sword, of Spanish fencing, which as many will know, the current Olympic sport of fencing comes from Spanish fencing, they dominated that art, but also the art of knife fighting and other arts of hand-to-hand combat ... Some chronicles say that the surviving Ottoman soldiers when they returned to their lands, told that they had faced in hand-to-hand fights with real demons that seemed to fight supernaturally at times, this is how some Turkish warriors described the Spanish soldiers. You have to stop here, to define how the Spanish soldiers of those times were, they were the toughest types that existed on earth, but apart from being tough, they were brave, untamed, and also had the ability to adapt to all kinds of climates, circumstances adverse ... Not in vain, the Spanish thirds fought for several centuries against all kinds of enemies, and for a century and a half they were invincible on the battlefields of the entire world, even, I think I remember that they even faced samurais, specifically Ronin, that they were samurais without a lord, in the battles of Cagayán, I stop in this part to relate as something curious and almost unknown to most of the story, despite the fame of invincibility of the ancient samurai, an ancient Japanese legend It tells how in 1582 a species of demons, half fish and half lizards, emerged from the sea in their black ships and destroyed the hitherto unbeatable Japanese warriors. The most surprising thing is that this episode is not pure legend: those boats were none other than those of King Felipe II and those lizard-fish were nothing but the soldiers of the Spanish thirds. I have seen in person, in Spanish museums, armor of the Spanish soldiers belonging to the Spanish thirds and Spanish admirals, and they were really impressive to see them up close, much more spectacular than what you could see on TV or movies, any armor from another time in human history ...

The Gregorian Calendar Reform of 1582 (11 years after Lepanto) suppressed the 10 days between 5 and 14 october of that year. It spared the feast of St Francis on October 4th but spurned two other big Spanish celebrations: Oct. 7 = Battle of Lepanto/Lady of Victory/ Lady of the Rosary and Oct. 12 = Lady of the Pillar. It seems weird that the suppressed 10 days were not on some other period. No wonder that Cervantes subtly complained in his Don Quijote, Part II, Chapter 62 - in telling of the enchanted head that "on Fridays it is mute, and this being Friday we must wait till the next day" - after some fact-checking it turns out that the feast of St John (24 June 1614) was not a Friday but a Tuesday: it would have been a Friday had it not been for those 10 days chopped off the calendar in 1582!

But of course, I honor the often-tumultuous Byzantine Empire as well, for its cultural contributions in addition to its acting as a long-standing bulwark for the Euro-Christian world. Despite its periodic schisms and differences with the Western church and the Western Crusaders--and that's a complicated history to be sure. I believe we should remember with pride and reverence all who preserved our cultural legacy and its survival by force of arms, from Greek hoplites to Charles Martel's Franks, from Venetians and Spaniards to Poles and Hungarians, and yes, the Byzantines. Also, it bears remembering that Europe is the cradle of American political, cultural, linguistic, and religious heritage, and had most or all of it fallen to Islam, America as we have known it could never have been. So taking the long view, epic battles such as Tours, the Reconquista, Rhodes, Malta, Lepanto, Vienna, et al. were struggles Americans should also know and appreciate. In fact, many do. Thank you for your thoughts! : )

What is not said here is that Genoa basically weaseled off (it must be said). While Venice alone was the one that found out how to break the Turkish formation not with the Galeasse like the author said but with 6 huge mercantile ships called "tonda" (plural: tonde), they were completely reinforced with metal lamination, rendering them impenetrable to cannon fire but also tremendous battering rams. Venice also had very narrow and swift boats called "galea" (pl. galee), they proved very effective cos were extremely hard to hit but were also fast, maneuverable and, most of all, were the only ship in the battle to have a cannon in the front, so they were the only ship able to attack without offering the flank.

well generaly european roundships at the time were going through a massive loop of improvement in terms of anti artillery protects the lighter and faster galleys could not keep up with, i recon the turks likely used a mix of lighter guns or rather old guns while europe was converging towards longer mediumsized guns that would fire ironshot. which was possible bc europe always had the worldst biggest metal output per capita. i could imagine that the turks had less medium sized but powerful guns and worse trained gunners since shot should be more expensive in the islamic world bc they used less mechanisation( in europe montane industry was very much mechanised with the help of waterpower, that would pump mines dry, help transport miners and ore, oremills that milled ore into fine dust for low cost, and then again waterpowered bellows, and forging hammers. this meant that europeans ships also had to start becoming more heavy built 1. for high seas trade all over the globe, 2. to withstand european made guns up to a certain degree at least. one can see how resiliant european ships were in the 16th century already with the last stand of the REvenge, an english ship that was basicly burned and shot down to the waterline by a spanish fleet. reinforcing a trading vassel basicly made it a fullfletched warship at the time.

also as far i know it was very common still for ships in that age to have front facing artillery, even relatively large ones especialy galleys and galleasses, many galeys had still lighter guns that were mounted inwards onto the own decks in the castles in the first half of the 16th century.

Sinclair LeoLani Infidel? Unfaithful? Just because I do not follow your smelly,Sumerian-Babilonic idol, Allah? and the poor lunatic man who declared himself prophet when he was not, Mohammed? The only unfaithful here, are you, disgusting Saracen. Your Islam is an invention of a shrewd merchant who was blinded and admired by greed, which led him to create his Islamic sect. A bastard like Mohammed who was never prophesied in the Torah by Moses in the old testament, nor by Jesus Christ, in the new testament, the Islamic sect, is the invention, of a poor man who was influenced by Nesturian Christians and that’s from where Muslims believe Jesus, is just “a prophet”.

Bill Charly every barbaric religion EXCEPT Islam originated in ancient Kemet in Egypt except for Islam; Islam was the only one that was different in a major way with its philosophy of the 5 pillars. Also Jesus was brown. Search it up.

shallnark I am fascinated by it because EVEN THIS proves my religions righteousness. Islam predicted that the Middle East would be in war in the future and that the Muslims would have enemies and because of this, judgement day would come years later. Believe me we’re currently 2/3 of the way there.

The Power of the weapon devised by God to defeat Evil, the Holy Rosary of The Blessed Virgin Mary, is how this battle was won. Jesus in the year 33 founded His One, Holy, Catholic & Apostolic Church on Simon, whom Jesus renamed at that moment Peter, which means rock. Jesus said, " And so I say to you, thou art Peter and upon this rock I shall build My Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give to you the keys to The Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you shall loose on earth will be loosed in heaven" This from the Gospel of Matthew explains the first Pope (Peter), the foundation of the One and only true church, and the infallibility of the Popes the successors to the throne of Peter to this day. The gates of hell never stop trying to destroy the true church , but though mere men are damaged by the demons of hell, the Church remains as Jesus promised, and still resists the onslaught of hell. It also illustrates why the gates of heaven always have Peter depicted as the gatekeeper even when depicted by secular atheists and vile moderists.

AT 11:44 the speaker says: 'the big armed warships, known as galesses' . This as nothing to do with the ord 'ass', but rather refers obviously to the Venetians 'GALEAZZE' i.e. 'grandi galere' or large galleys; these were battleships built entirely in the Arsenale (Shipyards) of Venice , which was at the top oh shipping building industry in those years. A galeazza had three masts, a full covered deck and could have on board up to 50 guns. The first prototypes of galeazza were most probably designed by a man called Bressan, Protomarangon ( chief carpenter) in the Arsenale in 1520.

in wikipedia it says that a galeazze is a merchant ship transformed into a "fighting" ship and that they were never on par with other ships (While perhaps never quite matching up to their full expectations.....) "wikipedia" xD

Good video and explanation! In my opinion, tre battle has ben won thanks to the higher firepower of Christian fleet, expecially thanks to venetians “galeazze”. I just don’t like that you don’t mentioned all the members of Holy Alliance. There were not only Spain and Venice in the battle, but lot of other Italian states. I read some comments about the role of Spain. Actually Spain was foundamental for the alliance, but the most part of Christian fleet was composed by Italians, also considering that the Spain had territories on Southern Italy, that means that even the Spanish part of the fleet was mainly composed by italian men.

@Hona Hona Actually, the Western European States was more advanced in technology, and Lepanto was the "final" prove of this superiority. If you don't know, the venetians "galeazze" were the first example of heavy armoured battleship: while the simple galleys carried no more than 2 guns, the galeazze had 38 guns ;) Surely it was also thanks to God ahah but it was more thanks to the heavy ships, the cannons and the arquebus
