Love learning about Spanish Medieval History. I don't know why they get ignored so often when discussing Crusader History (this channel excluded, of course). Talk to people you would think the Crusades only happened in the Holy Land.

Because it’s not the holy land

Thank you from Spain. I used to read comic books, El guerrero del antifaz (The warrior in a mask), he was fighting the Reconquista.

A video about the Battle of Rio Salado would be most excellent too even if it belong to a later period than the ones in this video.

Joseph O'Callaghan is the leading American historian of Medieval Spain. His 'History of Medieval Spain' covers the whole period. There's also a book called 'The Reconquista' by someone whose surname is Lomax, this would be only available in libraries or second hand. The Osprey books on military history will almost certainly have some titles covering the Reconquista. James I of Aragon's autobiography is available in a modern transmission. One should be wary of some recent books written about Medieval Spain, as they tend to idealise Muslim Spain, as though it was some modern multi-cultural liberal society.

I forgot to mention one excellent book, perhaps the single best book written in English in the last fifty years on this period: 'The Quest for El Cid' by Richard Fletcher. He explores contemporary sources to reconstruct the actual life of El Cid in a scholarly yet readable way. Penguin Classics have published a translation of the Poem of El Cid, which was written about a hundred years after his death. There are other contemporary sources available in translation published by Manchester University Press, please post below if you want to details.

Not kingdom of aragon but crown of aragon.... Besides you call aragonese to the king of aragon forces whilst they were mostly Catalans...

Fair enough. All your points are valid. In the future when I do a more comprehensive thing on James I'll give a more precise picture of the Crown of Aragon, including Catalonia.
