After suffering a nervous breakdown, high profile defence barrister William Travers turned his back on the murder cases that made him his name and moved with his family to Suffolk.

Despite strong opposition from his wife Jane, Travers decides to visit the murder suspect and old university friend Martin Newall. Travers and Natalie Chandra are shocked to discover that Lucy Wilson had a history for blackmail, strengthening the prosecution's case against Martin Newall. With Wenborn breathing down Travers's neck, the pressure really mounts. When Wenborn finds out that his wife Maggie has been caught shoplifting, causing him professional embarrassment, he lashes out at her. Later, he stumbles across a crucial coincidence.

Jameel Khan comes forward to say that he deliberately planted Lucy in the Qestrel office and encouraged her affair to get evidence of the firm's illegal dumping of toxic waste in Africa, collected by a ship called the Agadir. Will makes full use of this at Martin's trial.
Though he looks like a perfectly happy and successful man, defence barrister William Travers has yet to recover completely from a traumatic series of events that left him without faith in the legal system. Despite this, he returns to the courtroom when an old friend, Martin Newall, finds himself facing murder and conspiracy charges while being investigated by spiteful detective DS Mark Wenborn. Far better than American ones… James Purfoy… I really love him The first time I saw him was in the role of Anthony in the British series (still 😂) Rome He was literally killing everybody else by his simple presence! Great story. Superb cast. I would love to see a second season, though, in which DI Taylor gets Travers. Even though Travers killed two reprehensible people - after successfully defending them - he's a murderer, possibly still unhinged after his breakdown, and ought to be taken out of circulation. Most heartbreaking was the Alan Stewart subplot. Talk about child abuse. Every aspect of society failed that young boy, who might have been a brilliant writer, had there been anyone truly interested in him.

Top notch drama a hidden gem of a thriller. It's a shame that Charlie Creed-Miles always seems to be cast as an obnoxious character. But even obnoxiousness covers a great range and he is able to cover them all. In this case he takes it to a whole new level with great dynamism. A quite underrated actor who deserves better.

This did not disappoint! I was excited to watch it because I saw that James Purefoy is in it and he was of course outstanding. The entire cast was fantastic in their roles, but I had to look up to see who played Alan (this isn't a spoiler alert) because. oh my gosh. Joe Cole played the character Alan so well that it was actually hard to watch some of the scenes he was in. I felt scared for him, sympathy and wanted so hard to be able to come in and protect him and that was all because of the actor's portrayal. ... Anyway, this is absolutely wonderful and everyone who played a role in it did their character proud! If you're one of the people who reads comments to see if you want to watch and if you got through my long comment...definitely watch this! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 And, thank you to the uploader!!! 👍

There is a curious morality in this series that is not dealt with. It is, I suppose, a "happy" ending but on the other hand it really doesn't resolve the dramatic arc. I am reluctant to offer a spoiler but the author does it for me so I will say no more. The acting, the production values are all what we have come to expect from the UK, e.g. first rate but I am not surprised that additional episodes were not forthcoming.

Would anyone have a series with Anthony Hopkins called A Married Man? He was a barrister in London, who goes through a mid-life crisis and has an affair which ends in murder. It was shown on UK telly in 1983, and I would love to see it again. It captures London in the 1980s. I'm sure everyone would enjoy it, if someone was good enough to post it.

Yes! Excellent with twists in the plot to keep us guessing but, I do not enjoy the fast backward re -enactment as it kills the suspense. Similarly,the fast forward intro to what will happen is for the brain dead. I prefer to use my brain to deduce future actions within the plot. Nevertheless a gripping thriller wellworth watchinginspite ofmy childish comments. Thank you to the person who put the series in one viewing.
