Being able to see the entire picture definitely makes a difference. I’m a garage door guy. Work on them every day for just shy of 20 years. New guys come in, work on them for 6 months end think they have the bull by the horns. Sorry son, they aren’t there yet. Much respect to you Pete and what you do. Being able to make all the pieces work together effectively is an art. I’ll stick with torsion springs, cables, rollers and relays.

Let me offer a concept. . . I cannot afford a master like Pete on my own. However, If I collect my friends and we play it smart, we can genuinely afford a tuner to assist us in our ventures and let me tell you, we would lay out the red carpet for Pete to visit with us. And that concept is not far off for any race program ! TOTALLY WORTH THE INVESTMENT!

I grew up at the race track with my dad racing. I've not been fortunate enough to ever have my own car to race. I've been thinking about it more and more ,,but it all seems so intimidating to me. The holley especially. I'm not very computer literate so that's what's scary. I watch you these guys go into a program n move a few things around n change boost curves and shift points n it makes me want to buy a back halfed carburetor car and watch everyone drive around me. Love the channel came here from Finnigan a little while ago. I've learned alot. Can't imagine all the knowledge that you have. Engine builder tuner, musician, shop owner....ect. Mabe I'll just race vicariously through you tube.

As someone who has tuned their own car in the past, I say absolutely yes. Who do you want to do anything for you; a specialist or a dabbler? Of course my issue if finding someone that will even look at a 6 cyl. Maybe once I've switched to Holley Terminator it will be less of an issue.

Pete, knowledge is power, and I'm one that wants to understand and know how things work too. About 25 years ago an old timer named Floyd use to work on my 92 Ford Thunderbird SC, and he told me something that has been words to live by for me, "If you don't know how it works, you'll never be able to fix it right." Could you use an apprentice? Teach me....multiply yourself. I've been a Master Automotive and Diesel technician for 22 years, and I've been wanting to learn more! Wishful thinking. Keep up the great channel!

Pete, I have a tech request - In the intro there's a clip of a CalTracs setup working properly on the leave. I see a ton of cars with CalTracs that just don't work because they don't understand what it is they're supposed to do. Would you be kind enough to explain what they do and how you setup a CalTracs rear end the right way? I'd be glad to get hold of a tee-shirt, hat or hoodie from Real Good at Doing Stuff and HED.

You may want to do a regularly scheduled Livestream q&a session and maybe a series on how to tune without blowing stuff up (like a start and run before taking it to someone to get it really sorted). I've seen a lot of examples of people not having properly sorted cars and then taking it to someone who tells them their wiring is wrong. I am definitely the person that wants to learn how to do things on my own but sometimes paying for years of experience will make you advance and prevent you from doing the wrong things to start with.

Love this post. I built an '89 4runner, turbo truck. Lce engineering piggy back. Community forum for fuel maps. It was a beast. Then. I moved and I had no idea how to limp it to pass emissions in a CARB state. I wound up green tagging the truck for off road only, and sold it as such. And lost a lot of money.

Recent subscriber here Pete, (came over from Cletus), and I really enjoy your channel. I have just gotten back into drag racing after a 20 year absence. You are so right about the difference. My car isn’t the most high tech, but it is presenting challenges. I’d like to hire a tuner to get me pointed in the right direction. Problem is, who? I haven’t been able to find a good one in my area, and I live in the land of millions, metro Atlanta. If anyone reading this has a recommendation, please let me know. Keep the great videos coming Pete. I tune in for the music as much as the content!

I think you hit the nail right on the head. When I started street racing local in the mid 80s everyone ran a carb, engines were simple, but with no internet it was read a lot of books then go out to the garage and experiment. Like you said not the fast way to go quick but a great way to understand how things work or don't work. After a while I found myself going quicker with less due to learning how to match parts and tune things to work together properly.

For me, I would get a tooner involved if/when I get back into racing to learn the basics in order to have an enjoyable program early in the game. Often times, getting shown past the lower "ropes" goes a long way in supporting ones own learning of the more complex stuff that can get you past average performance in most anything. I would also agree with you, one can pay less "stupid tax" if that money were put towards a good tuner up front. Question remains, how does one find a trustworthy tuner to engage locally. So many people talk better than their work, it's staggering.

My suggestion/ what I want to see is you have a multiple part series of tuning parameters that cross reference between Holley and fuel tech targets best suited for hobbyists who are all out dyi guys. I have went to the tuner and done it myself. But always looking for more information and nuggets of knowledge if you will. Also do a small HED front logo with a big real good at stuff doing logo one the back best of both worlds.

This is exactly what’s has frustrated me with Cleetus. They grew to such a fast car he skipped all the time that gets the experience. They just didn’t understand the chassis, the track and none of the guys understood how it all worked together. I’ve learned that if your tuner can’t get his car to go down the track then maybe he’s not a good tuner yet. You’re speaking gospel here.

But it will be on their terms when they decide to seek ‘professional help’ Bonus points….. what fun would CmF be if he didn’t boog it up or blow it up along the way…. Kids will learn one way or another by the mistakes they make. He certainly didn’t get to where he is at because he skipped a lot of steps and made a bunch of wrong decisions…. I started racing in the 70s.. I got some very sage advice from a pretty famous racer at the time (multiple championships).. His opinion was if you want to go to the top of the pile? you go buy last years champions program and learn it.. Cheapest way out to win... I have tuned for most of racing career.. I quit 20 years ago.. We were doing turbo stuff before all the electronics and I worked with a "hired gun tuner" for fuel.. we had a blast... Anyway... I am going to need help getting up to speed and am willing to travel to you...

I don't know much about tuning race cars, but I do know that any time in my career that I've been siloed into being "the guy" of whatever it was, I basically stopped learning. The only challenges I had were those directly in front of me, and not from anyone challenging my ideas or approaches, and either right or wrong I would hack away at whatever it was the same way I always do. Having a pool of talented people around to use as a sounding board is generally far more valuable than whatever it costs in dollars.

Interested in merch - both HED and RGaDS - sweatshirts and (flexfit!!!) hats mostly! You hit on the reasons I would hire a "professional tuner" - I love tuning, but the growth curve is really slow as things get more complex and exposure to drag race situations are relatively limited. Hiring a professional tuner can give knowledge that has taken years to gain, in a matter of hours or days. No need to reinvent the wheel. Its not a replacement for actual experience, but its a huge step forward over a zero knowledge base.

I jkust want it to be way faster than it is, and i have been studying what needs to happen. at this point i feel like i will have to pick an ECU system and then learn it. i know it'll be a huge undertaking but therein lies the excitement. Your advice of finding an expert to smooth it out instead of burning yourself (or your car) out is great! some folks forget that the 10,000 hour rule is very real and a real expert is really helpful.
