If it weren’t for “Luckily no one was hurt” being said all the time, this would be a good example of showcasing human fragility.
@laurencefraser3 жыл бұрын
It's actually worth noting that in addition to being stupidly fragile. Humans are also stupidly durable. Utterly pathetic things that almost litteraly any other creature on earth would consistently come out of just fine cause major injuries or death with alarming frequency... But that the same time humans frequently walk off, or at least make fill recoverys with treatment from, mishaps that would be instantly fatal to near on anything else that wasn't so small that it would be functionally experiencing an entirely different accident. And most of both sides of that can be traced back to the advantages and limitations of the human brain and bipedal locomotion and the structures and systems needed to support both. A surprisingly high number of the deaths listed in this video would actually be survived with little or no injury (though the deaths by Crushing would almost invariably be fatal unless exceptional luck resulted in the individual getting off with a seveare maiming instead), though obviously not all of them, due to a combination of the above and the video's creator overestimating the speeds and hazards involved. Likewise, while many of the presumed injuries would be just that, a surprisingly large number would actually be a coin flip between "effectively unharmed" and "flat out dead" depending on exactly how things played out, with the in-between state of significant injury actually not all that likely.
@j.d.wilkes71892 жыл бұрын

Most of the early incidents from the books were based on real events so you could look up the actual events and find out what the casualties were. The Flying Kipper for instance was based on the 1876 Abbots Ripton rail disaster where the Flying Scotsman collided at full speed with a coal train and derailed. Nobody is believed to have died in the initial accident but a second passenger train later crashed into the train from the other direction resulting in 13 deaths

However in the TV adaption no such mention is made, presumably for time constraints. So now with that mention no longer in the story, it makes the scene 10 times more darker than it was before!

And with all of these hard stop impacts, one could have a body part thrust into the firebox if the door was open. Read an acount of a derail in Canada where the engineer's whole arm went inside the firebox momentarily, prevented from instant charring only by the full arm leather glove he wore.

He had to of still been burned. Also this reminds me of when my mom worked at McDonald’s and the maintenance guy had a seizure and his arm landed in the deep fryer and someone grabbed him and pulled him out but his arm was burnt pretty bad. He kept the arm at least, although the manager wouldn’t let them call 911 for an ambulance so the other maintenance guy wrapped his arm in a damp rag and took him to the hospital in the bag of his van.

5:13 In reality, the train indeed crushed towards the lower level of the station, and it caused 1 death of a pedestrian passing by the scene below the chaos. It caused several injuries among the passengers (minor) , crews (minor) , and the people in the station (serious and minor) as well as damages to the station. It was one of the most famous rail accident in Paris and France besides the accident during the 1990s in another terminus in Paris involving a commuter express train and a local commuter train.

5:03 In addition to the lack of an airbag or even a seatbelt in the lorry, there are other possible factors that would be enough to kill the driver on the spot. Some of these other things include the weight of the stone the lorry had, the type of ground the lorry crashed into, and possibly going at a dangerous speed after the driver lost control of the lorry. Not to mention, of course, the lorry was also driving along a narrow road on the cliff above.

Something I want to do is to actually research is the realistic chance of the crew surviving in these accidents. You also got to take into account what actually happened in the RWS vs the TVS vs real life. For example, when Thomas runs into the stationmaster's house, in the RWS he's maybe going 15 mph at most, he then travels across a road, through a fence, a garden, and then a house. Given that the garden is likely a flower bed based on some illustrations, that very slight gradient could slow Thomas down, then there's the house itself. The house likely had a combination of a wood and steel as a frame as that house was likely financed by the NWR for the stationmaster to live in. You can see why I'm so keen on researching this since Awdry based a lot of accidents in real life, it isn't always as simple as what appears to be. Another example is the 1886 Paris train crash. That accident caused only one death, and that was a woman selling flowers/newspapers on the street below, so not even the people in the station, the crew or guard got injured. So its likely Gordon's crash didn't even result in death, but just injuries. That aside, I loved the video. Funny to see how easily someone could've been killed in the show, despite being a show about talking trains with faces. lol

They must have had to hire a lot of railroad workers/crew members for the trains, and when they hear the tales from previous crew members, they would probably start to rethink things.

Interesting video. However, I feel the need to de-bunk some of these Possible Injury & Death counts (I'm no scientist or doctor, either). (Excuse the words in full capitols. They're just meant for emphasis given youtube commenting doesn't have a retched italic option) .Thomas & The Breakdown Train: We don't actually SEE the crash, so James's crew MIGHT have jumped clear before he toppled... They'd still have some injuries. .Thomas, Terence & The Snow: I can't really de-bunk THIS one... Best guess: The Driver & Firemen caught a glimpse of the pile of snow & braced for impact. The Guard & Passengers on the other hand... .The Flying Kipper: If we took into account the RWS Text (which I AM, here): Given the footage of the crash here, The way the Brakevan flips up & its roof flying off upon impact gives a SLIM chance of the possibility that the Goods engine Crew & guard flew out & landed (But not without serious injuries) head first in the snow at the side of the line. Even then, it's a bleeding miracle that they survived at-all. .Dirty Objects: I can't argue with this one. .Thomas, Percy & The Coal: pretty much spot on. & that is a very important "IF", for Thomas's crew. Thomas WAS RESTING in the siding, so it is likely that his crew were out to lunch. .Percy takes the Plunge: Another one I can't argue with. .A Close Shave: It's not clear HOW fast Duck is moving nearing the end of the siding (Ignoring the TV Footage, here) .Break Van: The RWS text says (& I quote): "The Guard jumped as the van collapsed. He landed safely on the side of the line." (These details aren't stated in the T.V. Series, mainly Because of the tight run-time, but it doesn't necessarily mean they don't happen at-all! Adaptation or otherwise) .Thomas Comes to Breakfast: @aJunctionMalfunction has pretty much covered this one... .Ghost Train: Another guess; Percy's crew saw the cart just in time to brace for impact. As for the Lime in the air, There IS the possibility they covered their faces with a rag/cloth until Percy moved clear of the Impact area. .A Scarf for Percy: A VERY comedic visual exaggeration! But the flying debris point is still valid. I can't picture very well how the debris would fly out if we took the layout in the RWS Illustration & Text) .Resource & Sagacity/Oliver Owns Up: Even in the RWS Text, THIS one is more ambiguous. They COULD have jumped out, but there's no solid proof...? .Percy, James & the Fruitful day: It's a good job that Percy's crew DID jump before impact. .Henry & the Elephant: Yes, Elephants are dangerous creatures, but The circus trainers might have (with extreme difficulty) taught them not to harm the audience on first glance (The Workmen qualify here). .Cranky Bugs: It's VERY likely that Cranky & the engines were all unmanned at the time... What of the crew on the Tramper, though? .Horrid Lorry: The driver would VERY likely be thrown from the wreck! Just not alive, though... (At a stretch; He could have leaped out just before impact & a small stone bumped his head) .Something in the air: They WOULD drown, IF they didn't jump clear after applying Henry's Brakes... (Come on, it's possible!) .Oliver's Find: We don't know exactly WHAT stopped Oliver? We never get to see in clear view the end of the track. For all WE know; there could have been a thick concrete storage platform level with his buffers & sturdy enough to stop him dead on. .Busy Going Backwards: The Guard landed in the bushes (Not the softest of landings, I'll admit) but it COULD cushion the landing enough to avoid broken bones... .Rusty & The Boulder: All statements are Solid, except the viaduct note. TRUE, the weight of the Boulder alone would weaken the structural integrity, but we don't see the viaduct again this episode (So we can only assume that it PARTLY collapsed off screen) .Harvey to the Rescue: He neglected the Guard in the Brake van. (I'm actually agreeing on this one) .A bad day for Harold: I would argue that a haystack WOULD soften the landing for a human or two, But admittedly, not Harold Himself. Given when Harold was built, his structure might have been sturdy enough to survive impact & be hammered back into shape. Also, It was never stated what caused his engine to fail, was it? Perhaps he was running low on fuel (His gauge COULD have gotten stuck giving a false reading), explaining the lack of explosion... (Far fetched, but it's the best I can think of. Cut me a bit of slack) .Middle Engine: It was STATED Percy's crew had left the cab (Probably to speak with the Tipper's operator). But yes, that would have happened, IF they were still in his cab. .James & the Red Balloon: I'm not sure, but I think a spark from James's funnel would set the Balloon alight before the heat from his boiler. I don't think the metal around his boiler is hot enough to set fire to whatever material the Balloon is made of. (Aren't balloons made of a flame resistant material?) .Percy's Chocolate Crunch: This is one of the FEW episodes where the The Narrator DOESN'T State "nobody was hurt" so the explanation for this one is PARTIALLY unnecessary. (Otherwise, factual) .Thomas the Jet Engine: We don't know HOW fast Thomas was going with jet propulsion? Maybe 20 mph faster than Gordon's top speed, & he might not even BE going at his full speed (doing so loosened his dome! Remember?) Plus, I doubt Thomas's crew wouldn't be smart enough to grab something to cling on to for dear life & keep the cab doors shut until the jet slowed down.) Someone please explain to me HOW the Jet Engine could explode...? (The First problem I'll admit is having a Pre-assembled working Jet engine, fully fuelled with a loose switch exposed on top) Dunkin Duncan: Duncan's Driver Jumped clear (I'll admit nothing was stated about his FIREMAN, though.) I realise some of these counter-points are far-fetched & nigh impossible & I'll take criticism. (I've never typed a comment this long before)

0:50 To be fair, if I remember correctly; the breakvan crew had cleared out before Henry arrived, but I would chalk up 2 by 2 Fatal or Injured here also since it's not always a sure thing if jumping from Henry before the collision, they would avoid the derailing cars behind.

There’d still be an accident. Since the trucks were light when going up, they stay down on the tracks. Well done! Greetings from Australia. A few points I would like to raise: 1. In Special Attraction, the trucks which fell on Bulstrode probably should've either been destroyed like in the RWS namesake story or badly damaged like in the kids' story. Also, what if there were people inside Bulstrode? Surely they would've been thrown around in his cab, paralysing or killing them. 2. In A Surprise for Percy, wouldn't the guard in Percy's caboose have received whiplash from the trucks breaking away? 3. When Scruffey fell apart in Toad Stands By, wouldn't Oliver's crew have received whiplash?
