I am a beginner in realism painting and you are one of the artist I look up to because of your great works. I have questions for you and I will be very thankful for your answers: 1.With all the available mediums today, I was surprised you used only linseed oil. What other mediums would you recommend for a semi-impasto painting? 2. Would you recommend using only Acrylic Gesso primer for protecting the canvas? Or is it okay if I only use acrylic gesso without sizing for oil painting? 3. What other mediums would you recommend for realism painting aside from linseed oil? Thank you and have a good day 😊
@IsabelleRichardArt
@IsabelleRichardArt 6 жыл бұрын
I haven't try other mediums and I have only use Gesso (white or black) to protect the canvas... Maybe I will make more testing in the future! Thanks for watching Rod!

This is definitely amazing stuff...painting dark skin tones is a skill but if I may ask, do you at any point use paint straight from the tube without mixing it with a medium??
@IsabelleRichardArt
@IsabelleRichardArt 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Richard! For the underpainting, I add a little solvent if needed. For the first layer, usually, I use 100% paint. For glazing layers, I add a little linseed oil or liquin depending of the consistency of the paint, if I need to speed up drying (liquin) and how far the work is going, to respect the "fat over lean" rule - to prevent the paint from cracking as it dries. I hope it helps!

Agree - captions are great addition. So you sometimes blend with a dry brush. I love the quick overview but can't always catch the colors on the brush so captions help. Also, how do you keep your "previously mixed colors" so they can be used after several hours/days?

I’m kinda confused on how the skin went from green then brown after you finished the shirt? Also will the results be the same if I gesso my board white? I don’t know if there’s other colors of gesso but that’s what my art teacher uses
@allisonprior
@allisonprior 4 жыл бұрын
This is beautiful, if you gesso your board white, the colors will be brighter, I liked the way she toned the canvas with maybe a burnt sienna, that keeps the colors nicely toned down, other colors of gesso are black, you can make your own colored gesso, by adding any color to your white gesso, such as grey just add black to your white gesso, or blue, etc..I hope that helped...

How do you chose the colours of your under painting since the end result is so different.
@IsabelleRichardArt

I am usually first painting the "shadows" colors (blue shades or green shades depending of the background of the painting). Then, the "living" colors (reds or orange shades) and the "light" to finish the painting.

(The following is not hate just some constrictive criticism so I’m sorry if this offends anyone) I’m sorry but you say African woman but she has a straight nose and small lips, just looking at it her hair is really only her “black” feature. I won’t say anything about the skin because we all know there are light skinned Africans.And I know there are black people who (probably) look like this but can you honestly say there are much of them in Africa? If you wanted to paint and African woman you could have chosen the “Average” African woman. And I say that referring to one with a wide nose and bigger lips as you would see on “average” in Africa. Yeah you can paint whatever you want but this “African” woman, looks more Latina, or anything but black.
