Today is a work from home day for Alexus, as Michi started her new teaching job and Alexus is working intensely on her first PhD scientific publication / manuscript (exciting!!) about Zooplankton Ecology in the Pacific Ocean. Alexus wakes up very early, does laundry, finishes editing a KZbin video, does some PhD work for the day, runs errands (takes her surfboard to get fixed), and works entirely from home in this day in the life. Alexus shares some of the struggles that she is having while trying to complete this first draft of her chapter one manuscript and other challenges of PhD student life. We are Alexus and Michi: PhD students and an international (Mexican American German) LGBT couple at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, located in Honolulu, Hawaii (Oahu). Alexus is a fifth year PhD student studying Biological Oceanography (Marine Ecology, Deep-sea Biology) and Michi is a fifth year PhD student studying Second Language Studies (Applied Linguistics, Language Teaching).

Thanks for watching the video! I think it really depends on on what subject/research you’re interested in doing in graduate school. Also, depending on the research you want to do, which schools have the best advisors that align with your interests AND are looking to take on grad students. Oh very good then if you have already found a program and advisor that is willing to work with you! Next would be securing some sort of funding (either external or internal-from your institution, advisor, TA ships etc).
