Stone Cooper Leg (Ruben Martin) - www.rubenmartin.com.ar
Stonefly nymphs (Order Plecoptera) are of a wide variety of sizes and are usually common those of medium and large sizes. An interesting fact is that in studies of food availability and food eaten by the trout is not uncommon to determine a preference in this order. An important aspect of this order is to prefer the stones or logs of good running rivers and large water oxygenation, their larvae are not good swimmers and being detached from the place to which are attached at the bottom often maintain a rigid position while resulting in the current until they are deposited on the bottom if you do not end up in the jaws of a fish on the way, during the drift usually in an upright position or curved, statically and in many cases with belly up . I think when it comes to imitating nymphs Stone are two very important aspects, one is that imitation achieved quickly get to the bottom and stay in that area of flow, and the second is that imitations must have a high degree of realism. This type of flies often have negative side that have a texture too hard, which makes fish the retain very little time before expel, but this aspect is offset by the large number of strikes that we get, in these situations we must have an excellent control of the line and be very fast in nail when we feel the strike.

As a fellow tier, most excellent in likeness, as a fisherman, how the hell do you get it to crawl on the bottom rocks in a realistic motion? One of the weird things I have noted about hyper realistic looking fly's sis that in practice they often cannot be fished the way the insect behaves, I think it is one of the reasons emergers/etc. work so well is can realistic tie and realistic present.

Hi buddy, is the same as perdigons and czech nymphing and other techniques, the important thing in some situations is to put the fly on the mouth of the fish and they will strike because of the current conditions, when i fish smooth rivers i fish with other flies, thats the beuty of fly tying and fly fishing. Best regards

Great fly to catch us fly fishermen :) when nymphing for trout they dont care, actually i think its better to have more lively materials as they wont spit it out as fast or something that will catch to their teeth, dubbing and cdc combo :) watching underwater trout feeding videos you can see that they will try lots of stuff and spit it out.
@rubenmartinflies
@rubenmartinflies 5 жыл бұрын
Hello my friend, I understand your point in traditional fishing with nymphs, but this imitation is more thought for the European fishing techniques with nymphs such as czech nymphing, french nymphing, spanish nymphing or polish nymphing etc, these techniques have gained tremendous popularity among the fishermen with nymphs throughout the world for their effectiveness and several world championships won, these techniques are used perdigones, micro nymphs and even get to use nymphs made with molds of lead or tungsten and painted up when one needs a lot depth in a very short time, Are strikes lost by having such rigid materials? yes, but sometimes you have so many strikes that it does not matter and even in some places it is the only technique that works, we in Patagonia use the Spanish technique where there is no fly line directly and fishing with tippet 4x, 5x in tension, this makes you feel the strike exactly at the moment the trout attacks and you can nail it immediately. In the end I try to show different techniques in my channel so that people can use them if they like it or not. Best regards

@@rubenmartinflies Hello Ruben. I meant no harm with my comment. I love your videos and you tie very good flies. I just would never tie this particular fly because it takes a long time and as much as I love to tie flies I like to fish even more. I do lots of czech style nymphing. Tight line no indicator pocket water :) Originally from Bosnia and I am very familiar with weighted flies etc. I like simple flies that catch fish but also admire flies that look so realistic like this one. But in my opinion realistic flies are more to catch us fisherman then catch fish. I might be wrong. I just dont see the need to go realistic for trout especially not with nymphs, for an example you are fishing 4 x tippet direct line mostly pocket water I assume. That fly needs to be heavy ofcourse so it can get to the strike zone but does it have to look realistic, I dont think so. Trout dont have time to inspect your fly. In my opinion no need for realistic flies. Its more profile/color that will entice them to strike than if it has 2 legs or 4 or 6 and if legs are perfect etc. All the best and I love your videos.
@rubenmartinflies
@rubenmartinflies 5 жыл бұрын
Its ok with your comment, but im nor agreed with you, if you came to fish patagonia Argentina in some rivers in many ocations if you dont have a great imitation you wont catch a fish, i didnt say this is the only nyph that catch fish is just one imitation but we have in our rivers and lakes very selectives wild trouts and sometimes you have to go very detailed with the fly, if you think in dry flys why people take so much trouble on imitate such as small insect like a mayfly with every details, thats because many of us saw the fish reect our fly, or why one person came to the famous soft hackle if the fly wont float enough, well in some moments you will need a fly like that to catch fish and i prefer to have that special fly in my box if the moment como to me, i love tying as much as fishing so i dont have any problem on being a little longer on the vise for a fly. Have a good day
@JokiBroki
@JokiBroki 5 жыл бұрын
@@rubenmartinflies I agree that some rivers have more selective trout than others. I have never fished Patagonia and that is on my bucket list. I have fished lots of rivers and I believe when it comes to dry flies the attention to detail is much more needed than when it comes to nymphs unless you are fishing slower pools where trout can really inspect your fly before they take it. If you are fishing pocket water/fast water attention to detail of a fly isnt as important as its profile/color. I am pretty sure instead of wire if you put cdc the fly would have same effect if not better even though to us fisherman the fly looks better this way with wire. I must admit I am jealous of your home rivers. All the best :)
