Trout Fishing Challenge - Fishing for Trout with $1.00 Play Dough!

In this trout fishing challenge, I attempt to catch a trout with Play Dough (Play-Doh). When I saw this pink Play-Doh at the store for $1.00 I couldn't resist. I thought it would make a great fishing bait for trout. Its pink, its non-toxic, its dough, sounds perfect right? Well, not quite. It sinks, and that makes it likely to snag on the bottom as it drifts down the river. It is also a little on the soft side which means it has trouble staying on the hook. I challenged myself to catch a trout on pink play dough, and I succeeded! For $1.00, I would say Play-Doh is a fair choice for trout fishing.

I save springs from old ball point pens and slip on to hooks to hold bait on. Also use a float to help bait that sinks to drift by current or breeze. Nice idea going to try it !

Last year, I caught 2 trout (my first ever) at a local stocked pond. The first a 16" rainbow on a marshmallow covered in vanilla extract. The second a 12" rainbow on Powerbait.

Here’s a test for all see if it works bring a heavy duty trash bag have it tied to a tree and a sign please pick up after yourselves see if it gets full and last person when it’s full please throw it in a dumpster

I enjoy the videos keep them coming. I carry a couple plastic shopping bags with me in my pack when I'm fishing. On the way back to my truck I usually end up with at least one bag full of other people's garbage, if I have the time I like to go to more secluded spots to fish. Less people usually means better fishing and less garbage.. but not always. People are fuckin pigs no matter where they go.

Ive always complained about people littering but after watching your videos I've become proactive and started picking up other people's trash. Me and my grandaughter picked up two large trash bags full yesterday on a river where i fish and ive started carrying a trash bag in my pack while fishing. Why are people so trashy? I love humanity but many people just disgust me. Keep it Realistic.

Just an idea I've used.... Dump the margarita from the blender and Grind Styrofoam to a fine particle size blend (makes for easier blending evenly in the dough add your scent of choice( garlic) the bait floats like a bobber with a drop shot on bottom offering a presentation as it rises. I've also found the lighter the hook and size further helps the buoyancy. Really a down to earth video thanks for posting.

I am from Kenosha, Wi. In the fall when the Chinook come into the harbor I use play doh, and have for 20+ years. Nail Salmon all fall long on Play Doh. I use a size 6 treble hook, about a foot leader with barrel swivel with a slip sinker and fish the play doh off the bottom. Never tried it for any other type of fish just salmon in fall.

Tried out the "Play Doh" yesterday ice fishing. Caught just as many trout with Play Doh as i did with worms and wax worms. Here is what i discovered. Works well on a tiny treble hook. Only applied a tiny bit to the shank of the hook so the fish had to nibble the hook to get to the Play Doh. That prevented the fish from nibbling the entire ball off the hook. Did not mater what color i used. The results were the same.

Here's what I have done with play doh and it has caught me a bunch of fish. Take play doh (pink,yellow,light green,orange) mix in some garlic powder and some glitter if you want...Bam! Homemade powerbait 😉

When I go fishing I take a little grocery bag and pick up trash every time. If we all did that we wouldn’t see so much of it for so long. Sometimes I come across trash that looks like it’s been sitting there for years.

I would give it another try, only with a bobber to keep it from getting stuck on bottom as much. That, and maybe less weight. Even if the fish don't like the taste of it, if you can feel them hit fast enough, you can get a quick hookset before they spit it out.

back years ago a friend and i were going fishing. at the time my grandmother was living with us. she knew we were going fishing so she did for us what she used to to for my grandfather when he went fishing. she fixed us breakfast at 5 am and as we were leaving handed me a plastic bowl of dough balls...my grandfather fished for buffalo (a carp type of fish). i thought to myself we're not going buffalo fishing, but thanked her anyway. after using all our worms and catching nothing we decided to try the dough balls before quiting, but they had sweated in the bowl and were too wet to use. i said we needed something like flour to thicken it up. my buddy owned a pet shop and just happened to have a jar of freeze dried brine shrimp in his car, so we figured what the heck and mixed it in the dough balls and WOW!! we caught every kind of fish from catfish to bluegills and tore them up!

Here in England, we often use a fly called a egg fly, resembles a fish egg which is round like the play dou you used. Orange is the best colour as it is closer to the natural although pink dose work, great fly around spawning time and can work when all else fails.

These trout are winter stockers that die off every summer. I think they eat anything that moves once they stop getting fed pellets. 👍

smaller hook and much smaller bait than I think is right catches em for me. I may try some for crappies around brush piles. Garlic by itself on a hook attracts fish but they spit it out when the bit is too big. It is amazing how the tinier the bait is the more reliable the bite can be.
