@Darnabymom maybe, but once the urine and poop saturate the cheap carpet , the smell will never ever leave the carpet. It isn't worth the risk to save any of that carpet anyway. Rebuilding over it will not hide the smell. It has its own life and must be destroyed!!!! Lol but serious.

I mean, I'd look at the flooring, too. If it's wood, it absorbs liquids. And any water that's gotten in is the Good part of that news cycle. There's rodent urea in there, too. Products exist to eliminate that stuff with enzymes, but to be honest, I only ever trust them on small spots and basically fabric. Is there a way to peak behind the wall panels without utter destruction? Because rats ... and mice ... if there's space ... Maybe talk to someone who raises rodents and knows both what they're capable of, and how to manage their wastes. You want a safe, clean environment, in the end.
@jd46800
@jd46800 14 сағат бұрын
@heidifogelberg3544 Yes, I agree. Since it's almost a complete rebuild anyway, I would replace all the wood that the carpet came in contact with. The walls are probably full of rodent droppings and urea as well. There is nothing worse than that smell, especially when you have rebuilt over it and can no longer reach it.

Best advice I could possibly give and many others here have already said it. Remove ALL the old carpet. All the cabinets come apart with screws and can be put back with ease. Plus it will make putting down new flooring much easier with all the cabinets out. A little more work but much better end result, plus the piece of mind knowing for sure it’s all clean!!

As a fire and water damage expert for 35 years. When you do a restoration, take it to the bear bones. In other words, you're never going to get pee out of a piece of wood, it saturates the wood and will be there forever. You're never going to take part of the carpet out without pulling everything out that is sitting on the carpet. Then remove all carpet and all wood that is saturated in urine,replace all subfloors that have water damage,Then begin ANEW😮. In other words. Rebuild And create you're OWN version of what you want !Have no regrets.BEGIN with your own ideas and don't look back.😂😢😮. Seriously, you're not leaving just a little bit of that carpet. In places that makes no sense that urine saturated your carpet, you're never going to get it out, and it also gets into your sub floor and that should be removed, or you're going to have the smell of urine forever. IN FOR A PENNY IN FOR A POUND

Jaylena, just something to think about, is spend some time looking around your Chinook, every place you can possibly look in to, as to 'rat proof' your unit, before you get going on the rebuild too far. You never want to have this issue again, so it's just a heads up, to spend some time seeing possibly where the vermin are getting in. Apparently, I'm told to also check up front, as they can work their way from the engine area, and even come in through heater ducts and such, so making sure everything is sealed is essential with your little one on board. We also keep mouse traps with us, for a 'just in case' senerio! You're amazing, and kudos to your hard work and abilities on your rebuild Jaylena! Interestingly...one time we had an issue with our motorhome a couple years ago, and where told to go to Eugene (which we did) and had excellent service. Unfortunately one of our four 'slides' needed parts, which were going to take a week to come in, but we tow our car behind us, so we just drove home to the Vancouver, British Columbia area (7 hour drive) but still, they did a great job on the repair that was needed!

They also have an angle a bit behind the front edge so you can dig it under the carpet/ roofing shingles, then pry down for leverage. I find this much easier on my body. Great job so far. It has enzymes that break down urine in carpets, on fabric, etc. It's what the Charge Nurse/Director of a stepped up care facility always has cleaning services use who either cleaned apartments in an assisted living facility, or had her in house staff use when someone has passed away. It removes everything harmful to humans and smells like lavender or black cherry. Mask, respirator preferably until every inch of that RV has been washed down. If you watch WD detailing. They found something that works on rat/mouse urine smell. They some how put a bowl with baking soda in the center console of a barn find car. Im not sure what else is added to it. But its left over night in a completely sealed vehicle. Mice/rats in a car is completely normal. I know you are frustrated that the seller didnt tell you about it. But its more common than you think. Every abandoned vehicle both on WD detailing and sleeperdude has a mice/rat infestation. I Know WD detailing tried an ozone cleaner but it didnt hardly remove the smell. But this new thing they found works so much better. So check it out. I cant remember which car it was. I wanna say it was a 60s car its with in a few of the most recent videos they posted. Sleeperdude just pressure washed the inside of the car. Which is not what you want. Rodent urine is very acidic. Its known for taking paint or clear coat off. And it causes metals to rust. If you want to treat the wood underneath on smell kilz paint or primer seals the wood and blocks the smell. Plus it prevents future rot incase of spills. Im all for positivity. I want to help youtubers accomplish their goals. Dont be mad at the seller for his lack of reporting whats wrong with the vehicle. As long as it runs. The rest can be fixed. I think that is what you will expect with every rv you buy. No matter who or where you buy an rv if its used. Unless you buy it from a business. Just think positive thoughts. Be thankful that you bought one that runs and doesnt need alot of engine work. I believe you can make a neglected rv look beautiful for you and your daughter. Especially since you're dealing with rat/mouse droppings & urine. I'm sorry that you're dealing with that. I love Chinooks, that old school type. They are great rigs! It will be fun to watch along the way. One other mistake that I made, which might help others on renovations is: I used a beautiful wood laminate flooring....but it was not waterproof. If the water was already hot you wouldn't need to heat it.😉 You got that right! After you put in the work, you will have something to be really proud of.

Ok so we were duke as well I didn’t want to buy ours it was rusty and not taken care of. My partner wanted it against my advice. We have a 1996 ford coachman I had all the mechanical work done tires etc. I took out the propane tank and ordered a new one it took 2 years to get it I completely demo the whole van down to the metal walls and fiberglass top. Found some new windows the old one sealed shut. So I now have all new appliances and remodeling the entire van. So far I’m still adding framework and insulation stage . Found a lot of mouse stuff and rust and holes but I’m glad I did this so I get your frustration and feeling. I’m also excited about making it my own. But now I have it stored until summer. I’m leaving to go across country in January until summer. Best wishes and enjoy your project it will be worth it it in the end Jax

I installed a webasto gasoline heater in my van. It pulls fuel directly out of the fuel tank. I eliminated all propane with lithium batteries/inverter and induction cooking. Just a thought. Enjoying your rebuild. Hang in there, you’ll get it done.

You also saved an old lady from get the scammed who might not have had the money to restore that and would have gotten sick living in that filth. The RV guy mislead you, if the heater worked all you need is a heater only thermostat, taking like twenty bucks. Also repainting the propane tank does nothing. Pull it and replace, there are many readily availble on the market and my bet is you can find an identical replacement.

I think the current thermostat control will work. It has a mode button that is used to switch between cool mode and heat mode. Just set it to heat and it should turn on the furnace when the temperature gets below what it is set for. As far as the propane tank goes, the picture in the video looked borderline to me, but the tank was never really in focus. I would drive to a place that fills propane tanks and sells tanks and ask them what they thought about it. If they say it's bad, then they might be able to point you in the right direction so you can get it replaced. They might just tell you to use a wire brush to knock off the loose rust and spray it with some Rust-Oleum paint.

SUGGESTION....change every fluid and every filter in that rv engine and change every belt and get a tune up.That year Ford v10 destroys spark plugs. Known issue. Replace spark plugs sooner that ford recommends. Also, listen to the requests for u to replace all carpet and wood that has mouse pizz. Ive renovated homes w urine smells and smoke and fire. If you do not get rid of every piece affected, then everytime ur rv heats up or sun hits it, the odor will reappear. Good Luck

Regarding your furnace and water heater- have you considered a Truma Combi? It is a combination furnace and water heater in one. You can get it in either 12V with LP, or with gas, or with diesel. Yes, it is a bit pricey but all in one and will save some space in the long run.

Take your propane tank to an LP dealer/filling station they can install a new one for you, way cheaper than an RV dealer. They can also convert a natural gas heater to propane.

Kilzs or Z PRIME will seal the floor against smells. As for the propane tank, once removed, sanded, primed and coat of paint, go to a propane DEALER have them install new valves and recertify for safety. I had to do this for my 2012 travel trailer. Most rv tank readers won't after a few years, My black tank always reads full because tp gets caught on sensor screws and causes the low voltage circuit to turn all four LD lights.

That Duo therm does not cycle between heat and cold. It only does either or. Also, it's very easy to just ad a simple Atwood heater tstat from the heater to the wall. He is just trying to sell you things you don't need. As far as the propane tank is concerned, I would spend the money and get a new one. It isn't that hard to get one made. Do your research, find a tech that can help you who isn't out to Rob you. I'm a 35 year rv tech/collision guy and I have no problem answering people's questions. It's want honorable technicians do. You are more than welcome to ask me.

PS: you really should wear gloves and mask cleaning Rat poop (black plague !!!)

There is a product called odor eater that works quite well. I would use it on the last bits carpet and the actual plywood floor. You can use it only nearly any surface so use it everywhere to stop odors. You can even mist it. It’s not bad smelling an dissipates quickly.

That's why most RV owners prefer to use a roll out synthetic flooring product in their RVs. The places RVs travel and park are often full of pests of all sorts, and it's not pleasant. RVs are not well sealed, nor are they well maintained, generally speaking. The older an RV is, the more of a "Pandora's Box" you get, and that rat stuff is yucky! My best to you on your "restoration" project!

Thanks for reminding me that with the basic build skills we have, buying an old camper that's been stripped down to bare paneling on the inside is not just the best price but the least hassle and surprises. Taking apart the inside of an old camper is always going to be a huge amount overwhelming ugly, whereas building it out after its gutted is where the joy is. As in my 30 foot travel trailer for $2K has been a disaster in other ways, but because the inside was 90% gutted, there's not many surprises and I can focus what I'm going to build it into rather than all the deteriorated junk. And number one most important concern is how to keep your build as light as possible because someday you'll have to slam on your brakes while driving and hope you can stop fast enough. That's the most important design feature!

I am really sorry to hear of your plight with camper. I have a heater that came out of a slide-in truck camper. It works extremely well. The heater quit working so I had a brand new installed. Come to find out, there was a bad wire running from the thermostat to heater. I no longer have the camper. I will GIVE you the heater. All I ask is that you pay for shipping. I live in Michigan. The heater is an 18,000 but. Let me know if interested. I can send photos and heater number if required.

The enzyme stuff is very helpful. I bought a house for rental, and the people had a herd of dogs that pissed all over the place. When they moved out, I pulled out ALL carpet, tack strips, and trim, and sprayed every inch of the floor (concrete) with the enzyme. Dried it, then repeated the process. After that, I vacuumed thoroughly and the smell is totally gone. It neutralized the ammonia and whatever other 'natural' stuff in there. Not expensive. I have since re-carpeted the bedrooms and put in wood laminate flooring. You can buy it concentrated and mix it in a garden sprayer... not expensive. (Oh.. I was also wearing a mask when messing with the carpet and the poopy areas.)
