Absolutely. Back in the 70s I played high school football and my friend broke off a long run and was about to score when he started showboating. A defender was able to catch up and punched the ball out and recovered it. At reunions we still bring it up and give him grief 40+ years later. 😂

I’ve been a runner for most of my life. Most of the time people push themselves the entire race but have no energy left and people can pass them. It’s all about pacing yourself go fast enough so nobody passes you but not so fast that you burn out at the end. Most likely the guy in first wasted all his energy and lost the race. He just couldn’t sprint at the end and gave up after tripping over his legs

OMG, I did almost the same thing as the first guy when I was 11 or 12. This also went down in Perth. My faction (Gold) had never won much vs the others, Blue etc and for whatever reason, I came into my own on running. I was so stoked for us as a faction as I was approaching the finish line I turned and gave a thumbs up to our little trackside encampment, stumbled ever so slightly and came in second…I’m turning 54 yesterday and can still remember it exactly 😂😂
