Gotta love Java 17 jettisoning the servlet API. Any existing back end binaries that used javax… have to have source updates to use jakarta… to get at request/response/query-parm stuff. So much for backward compatibility and stability. I’ve been programming apps since the mid 80s. JavaScript ain’t so bad.

JS being a pain in the neck is no longer a skill issue, it is a cold hard fact. Today my NextJS frontend crashed in the client review. there was around 15 people from the client company and 2 of my managers. I was grilled for 30 min straight. finally the issue was - backend dev changed the api key header value from "api-key" to "api_key".

I was the only data engineer for a video streaming company that operated in 28 countries responsible of everything data and while it was a torture I was happy I had admin rights on everything I need. THEN they hired a "lead" who wanted to do it the right way by opening jira ticket for every action, request approval for every admin task and have both morning and evening standups what I did and will do. Quitted not long after.

ahh that is what most project managers who other than going through a 3-month PM course always complain about... since other than making shiny reports and presentations they don't have any idea how anything in the project they suppose to manage work or why. that is when the stupid demands such as "how much does it take to move this list to the other side? 5 minutes?" type of questions come into play.. and it is indeed nerve wrecking. they live in a world of MS Paint, they have no idea that a software component is not a layer slide in a Power-point presentation that is drag-and-drop :D

I worked on backend, frontend, test automation. One of the hardest tasks were adding some animation without producing spaghetti code, creating fluid layout (it's very geometric, very logical, hardcore engineering - send them any slob that thinks that's not real engineering because tailwind _EXISTS_ and they can put 600 classes on 1 sad button) AND installing a different python version _without_ ruining all the other python scripts on your machine. Not to mention finding _any_ relevant log in a Java application, that's also extremely hard. All in all a great CSS architecture is possible, but requires planning and experience.

You also forget about the backend developer who actually has a lot of Razor and jQuery to write, on top of 20+ lines SQL queries in notepad because you don't have database access to have real data, only schema locally.
@TehKarmalizer

Not having at least a test database with an identical schema and fake data is criminal. It’s so much easier to make mistakes without a way to test and verify.

When Backend tells to fix an error it takes hours trying to look at JavaScript console and trying to figure out what went wrong. Then it's constant Stack Exchange visits, until you keep scratching your head to see what works, you pull your hair out in anxiety until you go bald and finally solve the issue.

Who had the idea to over engineer the front end and make that process so complicated that it takes years to learn? No one, it just happened! The "market" simply adjusted by catering to users short attention spans. The faster and more seamless user experience was something that became an inflated "value" and highly sought after. My question is, "why do I think that learning and keeping up with frontend frameworks is a good use of time?" I enjoy it, but to a point. I can also admit that the value is inflated. I'm probably avoiding something, like the rest of us who immediately move to a new service if it's a few milliseconds 'slower' than another. Maybe things need to break before I'm willing to see where the issue really is.

But I do understand that this is not the same for everyone, so here - you have my condolences.
