I think it's so effective because Kubo frames it as a murder mystery with Gin as the obvious culprit, but it was all just a diversion from the real truth. Even if someone thought Gin was not the culprit their mind would go to "maybe someone else killed him" as the plot twist rather than "he faked his own death". It's pretty hard to see coming since Aizen was not suspicious before hand and motives get established for why Gin would kill him.

Interestingly, in English both Soi Fon and Momo Hinamori are voiced by the same voice actress, Karen Strassman. And both characters share their main character trait--everything of them was swallowed up in the worship of their leader and commander who guided and trained them up to be loyal subordinates. But Soi Fon's loyalty was to a commander who, while worth the admiration, didn't fully understand the power of her charisma or how her actions could harm her followers. Momo's loyalty was a man who fully understood just what he made his subordinate into but, underneath his facade, was utterly unworthy of the worship.

To explain Kyoka Suigetsu some in a bit more detail, yes it controls all the senses a person has to put them under complete hypnosis. But something that I'm not sure was actually explained the best was the fact that once you see him release Kyoka Suigetsu you are permanently able to be hypnotized, it doesn't have a time duration for how long the hypnosis lasts, it's indefinite.
