So what you Joe says taken as a whole is right, not considering outliers. I've ran a t-shirt shop since 1998, did all my printing myself. Shop was very profitable but over time living in the unfriendly business state of California printing my own shirts became impossible. My model used employees of which I had three, California laws make it next to impossible and expensive to have employees. After a run-in with the State of California Franchise Board who demanded impossible restrictions on having employees I had to let them all go (I did give them severance). At that time in order to not close a long running business I did turn to Printify. True the margins are thin on printify, building my own t-shirts I was able to buy, print and ship t-shirts for under $8.00 leaving me a lot of headroom for profit. Not so with Printful. So why am I still with Printful? 1. Making money while I sleep: My store receives an order, printful prints and ships the shirt my profit deposited in my bank. 2. And this is important and easier to say than to do, Niche Market. I provide designs for groups with special interests, it's damn near impossible for them to find their shirts anywhere else on the Internet, including Facebook, Etsy, etc. Their is more, much more to my strategy but like I said my Internet only shop has been online since 1998. Other thoughts: I don't advertise. Because the products I sell our niche products my page usually ends up in the top three results in Google, and that is organically. I don't spend any money promoting my store, I rely on folks looking for those niche specialized designs to find me, and it works. I hope any of this is of help, it's just another business strategy that I think works. Don't get caught in the trap of making great general designs, they may be beautiful but you are competing against the world where everyone as great designs, that's a losing proposition. It takes gobs of advertising to get your product in front of people, if you have any degree of success your design will be ripped off by someone with deeper pockets and you'll have a short productive timeline. Joe's seems a smart and great guy but realize to succeed you will have to invest (gamble) on advertising in this most competitive environment the Internet has become! Just my two cents. Good luck.

Good luck to all of you, it's not easy and will not be to sell, most of you will give up, those that stick with it, will succeed and it doesn't matter what you sell. Listen to everyone and trust no one method, pave your own way. Innovation, patience, and understanding that it "cost money to make money" is the only way to succeed in this or any business. No guru or "not a guru"(not hating too much Joe, just saying) will help you win, as it is only you and your fortitude that can create success. There is a reason why Nike doesn't have a how to video. Absorb, meditate, fail, learn, and rinse and repeat! ✌

@@SpiritTracker7 Agreed, mindset is the most important, I do mean not giving up on the dream of business ownership, not a specific business model. Shopify or selling platforms, just like, facebook and ad platforms are just the tools available to business owners. But since most have no business understanding they end up in the box of it being the end all be all business and follow a methodology proved by so-and-so that says "Do it this way, and you'll make money", then when the spend or "waste" $300, for them it becomes a "scam". Gurus sell course with a 5% success rate because it is more sustainable then any of the 15 stores they open to accent their KZbin sales pitch, which also generates ad revenue. It's hard to succeed with just pushing junk from China or just throwing a design on a mug and running FB ads, which from most of these KZbin advisors is their shtick, or in most cases their scam. Silver category can still become gold if they just look to step out of the box, making a conscience decision to create instead of mirror. Thank you for engaging with me, not enough people talk through these things, and I wholeheartedly appreciate clear perspectives.🤘

Another thing worth baring in mind the audience. I’ve never met one person that has a personalised Bluetooth speaker or a blanket with their own photo on it. The thing with something like t-shirts (not necessarily t-shirts, it items similar to that) is that literally everyone you know probably has 10,20,30 t shirts. The market for products like this is huge if you can design, price and market properly, you can sell almost anything. And as POD we are effectively dropshipping, it doesn’t matter if you make 20 sales or 1,000 sales a month. Sometimes, lots of small margin sales is better than a few big margin sales

I understand your point, but there are a few problems: 1) Printful has lower priced shirts. 2) Printful has other types of apparel besides shirts with better, and more flexible profit margins. 3) Why are you counting shipping prices into your cost? Customers can pay for shipping. 4) Printify is another POD option with a number of print providers, all with varying price ranges and products. 5) Printful, like many POD platforms, offers non-apparel products.

Then to print all 30, it took 2 days of 4 hour bookings which I think added up to 70 pounds. Online, they are selling at 25 pounds each. I have sold a few at live shows. Thanks. I figured this out yesterday after about 4 months of no sales. I started a Teespring store and was using google ads and facebook ads. Thousands of people were seeing my ads and some were going to Teespring, but no one was buying. I could not figure it out why so many people were interested enough to go to my Teespring store but no one was buying. Until I decided to test the purchase process for myself. During the test I found that the t-shirts I was trying to sell for $19.00 actually cost around $29.00 after the taxes, shipping, etc. There is no way to reduce the price anymore without losing money because of advertising cost. The shipping was 2 to 3 weeks or more. I then understood why no one was buying. I would not buy a t-shirt for that price or wait the extended wait period. Thanks for confirming what I was thinking.

I'd just started learning about the POD t-shirt thing for etsy.....it sounded good but I soon figured out I'd have to sell around 1000 t-shirts to really make any profit. Then I'd learned that printify was rather unreliable on shipping times & actual quality. It seemed to me that selling a variety of different POD items would be the best way to go. Then, there's the $$ outlay for buying the apps for designing etc. plus the costs of "memberships" for using some of these design entities..... Basically, nothing is free to use.....lastly, there's the public domain issue & copyright issue etc. It all can seem very overwhelming to the novice. Thank you for validating my initial analysis on this system.

Printful is too expensive. There are cheaper options and since people are buying them for the print and message I am hesitant to go with any premium quality shirts, as they are most not likely factoring that into their buying decision. While t shirts and some other items might be too low of margin to make direct profits from paid ads to them, there is nothing wrong with having them as options in the store as one of the items a great print is on. I want to get people into my niche store with showing one product or maybe a few products and designs, and then they can browse the catalog and add multiple products to their order. Even offering discounts on bundles or upsells.

It's the get quick rich with fiver/joke shirt/meme shirt people that get disappointing when they make $3 a pop. Print on demand is great for me (Australian) who can build a solid brand and market it to the United States and Europe (1 Billion people vs 25 Million).

Hi Joe firstly I enjoyed your video, you make good points with facts and figures to prove your point, and I usually click away from most POD videos in the first 5mins but your video had me glued and it didn't seem like 13mins had past so well done for keeping me watching. So you left Printful But you didn't mention all the other products they sell Printful, they have a total of 220 including leggings, hoodies, accessories and many more products but you only mentioned the t-shirts, why ? And I've subscribed because you're honest and explain clearly with stats and examples. And don't worry about the haters, this video has done very well with most ppl giving you a thumbs, over 2k compared to only 61 thumbs down.

Thanks for your honest video, I am just starting and will take your comments to heart. I have a question: is there a scenario where it makes sense to sell a mix of t-shirts and more expensive items like hoodies in ones store, I.e. to diversify? Rather than to totally axe t-shirts altogether? Also, what if one focused on paid Instagram shout-outs and other marketing strategies rather than FB ads? Quite a few other POD videos on YT suggest to do that

People don’t seem to talk about doing wholesale much when considering print on demand. But if you plan to wholesale, you’ll also have to consider pricing much higher than this in order to account for what they take. If you don’t, you’ll also make even less or nothing on your shirt.

The advantage of pod is its on demand, no need to buy large quantities, just run ads, and automate it
@LL-ex1gp

Joe Robert Yes, I agree. Definitely a benefit of POD. It’s the pricing I was talking about as I’m often approached by shops who want to wholesale my products. Which means they expect to get a discount because they are buying in large quantities. So it can make it difficult to use POD for some products.

It's time intensive and if you need to rent out space can be pricey. But it may be something you consider if you believe it creates a better offer. If you think you can add more value by delivering the products faster (delivering in your local area from your car), including your own marketing material/ promotions, creating relationships with customers - there could be an advantage there.

It’s not enough margin. Not my opinion, it’s the math. $7.95 for the shirt, plus your $10 on average for ads brings you to $17.95 What about shipping? If you make them pay you’ll be making $3 - if you watch the whole video I show you products you can sell to the same niches with same design concepts as shirts but make 10x as much.

From the example you gave, not sure the math is right. Shirt: $25(selling cost) - $10(cost of shirt) - $10(cost of ad)= $5(profit) This makes sense. Leggings: $49(selling cost) - $22(cost of leggings) - $10(cost of ad)= $17 NOT $22. Also is $49 a good average for selling that product or is that an example?
