@@fanaticcoder3320 no... definitely not. The old (white racist) National Party, which ruled South Africa under their odd "apartheid" (literally "separateness" - i.e. they shall not live with us) regime was the one who developed the nukes, as a threat to their less advanced neighbors who they often got into conflict with, often due to said astonishingly racist policies. When it was obvious that the NP wasn't going to remain in power much longer, De Klerk had them dismantled. They were only "Fat Man" type of bombs essentially (~15-50 Kt range, so pretty small), although apparently with a safety system based around filling the inner cavity in the weapon with a metal chain... to arm the weapon, you'd first need to pull that chain out. Vanunu was a junior nuclear technician at the Nuclear Research Center at Dimona, Israel who exposed Israel's production of Nuclear Weapons and took 57 photos inside the facility to prove it. The Vela 9 incident has long fascinated me.While I was studying nuclear weapons policy in uni, we discussed this a bit. Very strong rumors from ex-intel agents report that it was a test hosted by Safrika and Isreal, like you said. Where it gets interesting is, the test was of an ERW (enhanced radiation weapons), basically a neutron bomb, designed to produce more neutrons than a "standard" nuclear detonation. You cannot generate neutrons on this scale without SOME form of nuclear detonation, which is why the US eventually stopped using ERWs ourselves-- propaganda made them out to be "clean" bombs that only killed living tissue and left everything else, but that's not true and the benefits of the EMP/neutrons don't really outweigh detonating a nuclear device in the first place. Anyway, the rumors state that SA/I used something like an old bank vault built into the ground, an ERW weapon which produces much less residual radation, and conducted the test during a typhoon to suppress/disperse radiation in the air.
@fanaticcoder3320 Жыл бұрын
Still why they couldn't find anything? an ERW should have more radiation levels, right? do you think US were hand-in-gloves with Israel that time?

Israel and SA were collaborating militarily at the time, notably the R4 rifle which was ostensibly an Israeli Galil, among many others.

The Israeli Galil is itself a “copy” of the Finnish RK series of rifles, themselves “copies” of the Soviet AKM (which borrowed features from the American M1 rifle [named after its Québécois inventor, John C Garand]). Rifle designs are not great indicators of collusion.
@Petriefied02463 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that one of the scientists involved admitted to it and that it was one of a dozen tests that they conducted. They don’t seem to be mentioning that another such “incident” occurred in the Early/Mid-80s. And.... It WAS Israel/S. Africa. Israel basically had ALL of the Nuclear Scientists it needed (many who worked on the Manhattan Project) to create a nuclear weapon, as well as several sources of fissile materials out of which to make them.

You can't omit the Vanunu saga in this story: In the early 1980s Israel WERE making Tritium (common fuel for two stage Hydrogen bomb) as well as ammassing Plutonium (they had a plutonium seperation plant in the mid-60s). France were supplying Israel with U235 in the 60s which reports say Israel could enrich to ~60% in approximately a day with gas centrifuges (apparently also using Laser isotope seperation at the Dimona plant), it would not take them much longer to get to the over 80% mark (needed for basic atomic bomb with reasonable yield and less likelihood to fizzle) - This type of enrichment (over 25%) is not for a fission reactor, it would be dangerous and unsuitable. If they were even considering a Fission -Fusion bomb with the Tritium then it would make sense that they either had been simply gifted functional Fission weapons (USA- politically absurd but, you never know or more likely France) or they had in fact tested their own production of weapon which is what this COULD be. I always found this incident unlikely to be a test for many reasons (some mentioned in this video) but it still remains very possible that it was a very small yield but highly efficient bomb test- remember, the more fissile material used up in the chain reaction to create heat and light the less fallout will be recordable post test. I find it unlikely that Israel has NEVER carried out a weapons test- in Approximately 40 years of spending large amounts of resources on nuclear weapon capability it seems very unlikely. If you read about Dr Khan and Pakistans acts to reach nuclear status it seems unlikely that Israel have not had a successful test at some point- personally I think it is more likely to have happened during the mid-60s than 1979 but it's fascinating speculation.
