I Got damn near home when the police happened to be parked in an alley I was going through asked if it was "some fraternity stunt thing" being that I really close to U of O. campus. I've got a pretty capable off road vehicle and I carry a recovery strap (and lots of other recovery gear) so that a REALLY good 4x4 (Jeep Rubicon, etc.) can bail me out when I get stuck. Only thing is, I have never needed bailing out, while at least a dozen other cars have been bailed out by my rig using the shovel, jack, recovery strap, etc. The key is the recovery strap, which is designed to work like a (really beefy) rubber band and has some spring to it. It does not put sudden high loads on the other car (or mine!) so stuff gets ripped off or damaged. God help you if you use a chain, steel cable or heavy cable and don't know what you're doing. BTW, every single time it is SAND that trapped these unfortunate drivers.

I once got my car stuck in a muddy lot, it was dirt before it rained. A guy with a truck offered to help me out and got a chain and hooked it to something under my car. I thought it was the axle. Turned out he hooked it into a hole in a valence panel under the bumper. It could have been worse, but the hook ripped through the panel like a can opener before it hung on a bracket and stopped. I found the damage later. You couldn't see it unless you looked under the car, but it still upset me. Find a pro when you get stuck.

i have gotten my car stuck in a mud hole before going off roading. plenty of tow drivers damage cars as well. i work at a shop so cars get towed in often. its not uncommon to see bumpers torn into as they grind the ground, drivers using the bed against the bumper/grill to push a car, drivers droping a car off close to the curb and damaging the wheel or rockers. educate your self on how towing works so if you ever find you need a tow you can at least have an idea of whats going on and possibly anticipate issues, no one is going to care about your car like you do.

@silentepsilon8886 жыл бұрын
I know that you need to keep the momentum going when towing someone through sand so that you don't get stuck when hitting a soft spot in the sand, but most people get confused when being towed backwards because the way the wheel needs to be turned is opposite of the direction they want to go. I think it would be safer and less frustrating for the person being towed to get them out of the soft sand and then rehook to the front of the vehicle once they are on more solid ground to tow them forward all the way off the beach.
@Joshua79C6 жыл бұрын
yeah when the tail swing in one direction and need to go the other when being dragged backward, it gets a bit confusing if not paying attention, he did good considering the circumstances of the sandy dynamics up until the second pull along after a pause
@Engineer97366 жыл бұрын
It’s not only the reserve steering. It’s also an unstable steering setup. Any steering error amplifies a lot in the meters after the error. You need to correct the course continiously. Like balancing a pencil on the top of your finger. Very dangerous at such speed.

Silent Epsilon - What do you mean you have to steer the opposite? He's not backing a trailer, turn right to go right, turn left to go left. Turn just a bit too sharp, especially with how fast they were going, and the front can fishtail which could easily cause some, probably most, people to panic.

Once again another vehicle that has no business being on the beach. Mistake #1, thinking it could do it (blame the car commercials to an extent). If you do that much wrong you’ll probably not know that there are places that even a real 4x4 shouldn’t go. Lastly he can’t be expected to do everything right when he’s rescued. Seeing the front end disassembled shows why real 4x4s have tow hooks bolted to the frame from the factory so the vehicle can be rescued without damage. There’s your cue, if your vehicle doesn’t have them, that probably means it wasn’t designed for this kind of use. We have a state park near by and if he took it there the ranger would have told him that no way no how was he taking that on the sand. The park also requires you bring certain equipment with you and they are strict about it. Island Beach St. Park, there’s also the NJ Beach Bug Association. Check there web sites or reach out to them and they’ll tell you what you need if you have an urge to hit the sand. It’ll save you plenty!

Why you yanked him backwards so fast that he (who knows how good a driver he is?) wasn't able to follow your track?
@ranchero506 жыл бұрын
The car is dead weight so you need to keep it moving fast or the tow vehicle will dig itself in. When you hear his truck rattle, that's the tires starting to dig in. The car also wasn't running so it is more difficult to steer, especially when going backwards.
@Engineer97366 жыл бұрын
ranchero50 That it’s more difficult to steer is a bad thing, not a positive. A reserve driving car is an unstable steering situation so it requires a very skilled person at such speed + the option to stop when it goes wrong. I have not a clue why he chose to tow it in reverse. The effort of turning it around at the beginning would have been worth it every bit.
@travis47986 жыл бұрын
Car can't run because the radiator was ripped, so it can't help the truck out, if it looses momentum the truck can start digging. Also depends on if they have to beat the tide.

@johnlaws92306 жыл бұрын

Hahaha the comments about people saying the pro yanked on the car too hard. Look at the front of that car! It has bigger problems! No he's not making it worse, that thing has a very uncertain future depending on what all was ripped out of it and what other inner structure damage happened as a result. Cars are tinfoil, tearing pieces off damages everything that piece was touching. He has to yank it on sand because he's using the inertia of his truck to keep it going without spinning his wheels and digging in. Also, when you are a superior driver, you manage to keep your car out of situations like that!
@baloghlcb5 жыл бұрын
Exactly! He has to keep his momentum up especially now that he is also pulling the weight of the car. Less chance of him also becoming stuck. Also most people make the situation much worse when they get stuck. They panic and keep mashing the pedal digging themselves deeper. As soon as you feel that you're stuck, stop hitting the gas instead of burying it to the frame which will just make it more difficult to be pulled out.

Hey check out bungee ropes for towing. The Australians and New Zealand folks love them. You can tug rather hard without the sudden force on there vehicle.

@@billsilversides1620 no, no they are not. But a busted frame is even more expensive. Last time I pulled a Suburban out of mud, one of the windows fell out of the tract. After that I bought a snatch line. It was cheaper that my buddy's bill for fixing the window.
