actually in my country Estonia we do have digital ID... there is little questions about voting... but same time i would say mail voting is as dodgy... what actually makes it work in here... you can to your business going to office. It will take more time, it can me be more expensive etc but noone has taken them away. But if you use it, your taxes are done within minutes, you can start your company within hours, can book doctors apointment in a second... we would not imagine life in UK or Germany... the paperstuff and the time would drive us mad.

They would need one because it's an easier and simpler process of identity verification. For example, if you buy something online age-restricted, you won't have to send the seller a picture with an identity document showing your date of birth. They can just check through a certified identity provider if you meet the age criteria. Less paperwork, faster transactions. Same as cash vs card. To buy a flight ticket with cash, you need to go to an ATM to get cash from your account, find an agency, go there, show documents, pay, they need to have change, and so on. With card, you just buy online easy and simple at your home.
